In Otsu, Tamba, Akechi?s sacred Sakamoto Castle lies on the shore of Lake Biwa. Tonight, Akechi has been entertained by poetry readings from some of Otsu?s greatest writers.
Akechi Mitsuhide kneels on the floor, pouring another drink. The liquid sloshes over the rim, gathering in a small pool around the bottom of the cup.
A knock on the door. ?Sir??
Akechi lifts his eyes to the door, still poised with the bottle of sake in hand.
?Come in.?
The page peeps his head around the door, his eyes flickering around the room before he dares enter fully. He tries his hardest to ignore the gazes of the now silent poets. He approaches the table, then bows his head as he extends an envelope towards Akechi.
?This just came for you, sir,? the boy says, ?an urgent request from Oda Nobunaga.?
?Thank you,? Akechi says, ?dismissed.?
The page seems thankful for an excuse to leave. He scuttles out of the room, pulling the door quietly behind him. Akechi tosses the envelope down on the table, forgetting about it almost instantly as another poet begins to read out his work.
It?s late when the poets finally leave for home. Akechi, red-faced and light-headed, doesn?t even think about the letter from Nobunaga until he returns to the room after seeing off his guests.
?Nobunaga, huh?? he mutters to himself, ?I wonder what he wants??
He kneels on the floor once more and opens the letter. His eyes bulge as he reads the text: he?s been requested by Oda Nobunaga, on behalf of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, to amass an army and begin heading west towards Takamatsu Castle. The castle was owned by the Mōri clan: a long-term rival of the Oda Clan.
Usually, Akechi would jump at the opportunity to help Hideyoshi and Nobunaga. But there?s a chill down his spine as he thinks back to that particular samurai - a traitor, hidden in the shadows, who had held the tip of a sword to his throat and uttered a short, yet complex, command: ?Kill Oda Nobunaga.?
?Sorry, Nobunaga,? he mutters into his cup, ?but it?s either your head or mine.?
?So, you?ve turned against Oda Nobunaga, have you??
Akechi?s head darts around. He relaxes when he sees who it is. ?I thought you?d gone home, Justin.?
Justin shrugs. ?The night?s still young.?
?I liked your poem about the Chinese prostitute. Very moving.? Akechi gestures for Justin to sit and then reaches for a clean cup. ?Would you care to join me for a drink??
?Why not??
Justin kneels on the floor opposite Akechi. His hands tremble in his lap as he watches Akechi pour the sake. He gratefully accepts the cup, the seconds ticking by as slow as hours as they sit in awkward silence. Eventually, he can?t take it anymore and decides to jump the gun.
?Why have you turned on Oda Nobunaga??
Akechi lifts his eyes. ?Are you a cop??
?N-No.? Justin laughs. ?Whatever would make you think that??
?Then you?re a spy.?
Justin?s laughter halts.
Akechi sets down his drink. ?Who sent you here and why? Was it Nobunaga??
Justin gulps as he watches Akechi rise, pulling a sword from under the tablecloth.
?Well??
?No,? Justin says, ?I came here of my own accord.?
?If you?re not aligned with Nobunaga, and you?re not on my side ? then the Emperor must have sent you.?
?N-No??
Justin doesn?t get the chance to make his defence before Akechi?s sword pierces through his chest.
Akechi wipes the yellow blood from the blade and makes the preparations to assemble an army ?just as Oda Nobunaga instructed ? but he won?t be heading to Takamatsu.
Justin the Dairyo stumbled upon a secret.
