The "I learned something new today!" Thread

This is random, but I've recently started braiding my hair (in pigtails, like my AC rep). I really want to be able to braid my hair in one plait down my back, but something about it just evades me every time -- it's hard to hold the strands of hair from that angle and it literally makes my arms hurt, lmao.

During a recent visit home, my mom gave me some advice as she watched me struggle, and while I wasn't able to incorporate it into making a big braid, it has seriously upped my pigtail braid game. Now I can start them much higher up on my head. I've been staring at people for months wondering how they did it, and now I know. I feel like I've been let in on a huge secret.

I learned that Birdo is referred to as “Catherine” in Japan. Wow.

Also, this is a self-discovery, but I realized how much I actually like pineapple. I used to dislike it without giving it a chance. After tasting it, it’s pretty good.

I found out that the French (Canadian, I'm assming) title for the movie Turning Red is "Alerte Rouge" (translation: Red Alert). I thought it was interesting that they didn't go for a literal translation, but I guess maybe it didn't work out or sound good. I think the title makes sense either way.

My hair is almost to my hips, so I wear a single plait often. I get it started (2-3 crosses), then shift the hair over my shoulder to finish the braid. That way I don't have my arms up over my head, which is awkward and uncomfortable.

It's not a today thing, but for the longest time I didn't realize most can openers have a bottle opener on them.

Dogz was created because of the reception of Robert Fulpe’s Night Trap, which inspired him to make a game so family friendly that it couldn’t be considered inappropriate for kids
He even asked a mall Santa what kids really like and made the game based off of that

Writing and designing an article on the history of virtual pets lol

This is a good idea -- I'm going to try this, thanks! There's so much to learn about braiding. I feel like I missed out on things I was supposed to learn within the first ten years of my life, haha!

I have discovered that the bottom of our pepper grinder can be rotated so it's open or closed more, which changes the sizes of the ground up pieces. It's like the most boring adult thing but it blew my mind.

I guess I also learnt that being 23 makes me boring 😭

You can store food in a glass jar with just two tbsp of vinegar if it was raw and then cooked in the jar before storage(food emits own juices). A lady shared the whole process of the method on YouTube after learning from her grandmother. It randomly showed in my feed and I find it interesting :)

TIL: I didn't know the legal age of majority in Japan was 20, I thought it was 18 like most places, but they are actually passing a bill that they are lowering the age of majority to 18 instead of 20 on the flip side I also didn't know Japan has one of the lowest ages of consent in the world at age 13 but they are also changing the law to increase the age of consent from 13 to 16.

I learned that the 3DS has a 3D slider 😶

I still think any age of consent below 18 isn't enough, I would personally prefer it to be 21 but that's probably wishful thinking. I like many aspects of Japan but tbh the 13 year age of consent is pretty despicable.

Pineapples are really good! It's one of my favorite fruits. You can grow a bush/plant from the top stalk/leaf part of the fruit. And only one fruit can be harvested from the mature plant. So it takes a lot of plants to grow pineapples.

I tried to propagate them before, but with limited success...
