The Official Feedback Thread

also, probably an unpopular opinion but I'm just too overwhelmed with all tbt events at the minute, I log on and there's 70 different threads and 50 pages of rules and deadlines every day (I know this isn't every event), it'd also just make the staff lives easier, I'm sure it's totally overwhelming hosting/planning so much
Personally, 💯. One of the multiple reasons why I prefer rng events. They are just simpler for staff and members, random winners, collectibles still get in circulation, and people are unlikely to have hurt feelings when it ends.
However, I understand there are people who don't like rng.
And I do like the idea of not allowing the same person to win a rng event twice in a row even though it may be two separate events.

I agree with what Crash and Halloqueen about the events, specifically about the effort. For example, I have never one a staff favorite on an event. Granted I've only been here for a few years, but it does still hurt when you put lots of effort into something and it ends up not being accepted for "low quality work". (No hate of course, the staff's just doing their jobs, but it still hurts when you put so much effort into something and it doesn't get accepted.) So based on this, I do believe it would be great if we had multiple categories for staff favorites, like most funny, most unique, etc. That way, more people would have a chance to be in the spotlight. Of course, if this does get added I would like to suggest to limit each staff favorite category to one person, so that someone can't just win all of them and ruin the chances of someone else getting one. Or you could at least have what Dunquixote said where if one person does get two nominations, there could be an honorable mention for that prize as well. (Correct me if I'm wrong since I haven't actively participated in these events since last year, but I think I saw an event that had an honorable mention but I forgot which one)

Thanks for making this thread! I didn't post in the other one cause lots of other people had already summed up most of what I was thinking and that's already the case here too, but I did wanna echo the internet safety thing. I've been on this site since I was 16 and way back then I had an extremely bad experience with an older creep who was also an active member at the time. I'm not really sure what else can be done by the staff to help mitigate older men (or whoever) taking advantage of younger members, but given that this is a site used by people of all ages--including plenty of young people--I think it'd be helpful to see staff take on a more active role in encouraging safety. When my experience happened I didn't say anything about it to the mods in part because I didn't really know if there was anything they could do about it, which definitely isn't anyone's fault! But I think emphasizing ways to be safe and making it clear that action will be taken if a member is acting inappropriately like that even if it happens offsite would go a long way. I totally agree the "what do you look like" thread should be hidden to non-members if that's possible and only allowing people over 18, or even over 16 like mog/crash suggested, should be considered. It won't drive away all predators obviously but I feel like they're pretty small changes (if restricting the thread/auto-deleting posts after a period of time are possible to do) that could help a lot

Adding onto the WDYLL topic, I think the staff should also consider how long you’ve had an account for here on TBT and perhaps a certain amount of posts you make. I’m not sure if the process of making one has changed since I joined back in 2018, but it’s pretty quick to make one, easily circumventing the requirement of viewing the thread as a member if it would ever be implemented. Like others have already stated, young people gather here on TBT as well given the nature of Animal Crossing reaching out to audiences of all ages. Make it difficult for… Certain people with unsettling behaviour to get through in the first place. Create layers of hoops to the point it just deters them from going to the thread in the first place.

Now, I never posted in that thread before, but I just get really, really paranoid thinking the possible dangers of posting a picture of myself. There could be a chance that my life would be ruined just because someone went out of their way to doxx me based on a single selfie.

Regarding raffles and RNG, I wanna give a suggestion and say that for future raffles, it would be nice if there was a gif or a video showing the list of participants and then the host clicking the button to see who won.

I kinda disagree on excluding users from a future raffle if they won one in a previous event. sure the same name may pop up but as someone told me, that’s just how raffles work with the randomness of them. Some users are incredibly lucky and I can’t fault them for that. There are some exceptions I’m fine with though like how in the fair, users who managed to buy a shaker keychain or plush couldn’t enter the raffles for physical prizes. And there’s 12 days of collectibles where if a user won a collectible, they can’t win again for the rest of the activity but can still claim a ticket for event currency.

Hey all, thanks for the feedback you all left since the thread went up. I thought I would post a quick reminder that we have a series of responses to feedback in the works, which we started compiling after reading every post of the original thread. Much of the feedback has been repeated in this thread, so I just wanted to mention that we already agree with many of your ideas or will share more information related to these topics. I outlined the categories for these in the second post of this thread. The reason we’re posting these one at a time is because the list of topics turned out to be extremely long, so this was the only feasible way we could address everything.

One thing that was addressed for the first time in this thread was the topic of privacy, specifically concerning the WDYLL thread. We had actually started discussing this ourselves before receiving feedback, so it’s something that we could add to the list since some of you agree.

Finally, I do want to please ask for no condescension or dogpiling directed at staff members, as it’s not helpful and, as I mentioned, we’re actively in the process of forming our responses to these concerns, including this recent one that has come up again. The list we created from the first thread was quite long, so it will unfortunately take some time to get to each item. Also, please reference the tips for leaving feedback in the first and second post of this thread. Thanks!

I agree with this and think this should happen lmao. I was going to send a CTS about this back in December but got busy.
I know this is too much work but I think a live stream or something over Discord would be nice.

I get it for suspense, but I don’t think anything shady with the staff. I don’t think they’re rolling more than once to get a different winner.

I don’t need proof that the staff are being honest with the RNG. Some are just incredibly lucky.

I don't think anything shady is going on with the staff, but having rng filmed and similar things sometimes could be seen as a way to be more personal?
I'm personally fine with that kind of stuff not being filmed, but I don't think it would hurt to film it now and then if there is a want AND if staff are up to it, or film a hat drawing or other similar things.
It is an additional thing for staff to fuss with that takes time, which needs remembered and is an understandable limited resource.
Edit
I'm also find with the idea of selfies being banned on the forums for at least the minors and the wdyll thread removed tbh. It's less moderating work doing it that way and it's removal and partial ban isn't a huge effect on the forum participation experience. Especially if the General Discussion section being a log in requirement is seen as an over kill. The partial ban and removal of that particular thread would address possible minor selfies showing up at all.

Having thought about it, I agree that having a public photo thread on a shared space with adults and minors is rather odd in concept. There are unfortunately people out there who do not have the best intentions.

It would be nice to have a middle ground If that could be readily enforced.

Honestly, there should also be absolutely no tolerance towards private messaging a minor after they've posted a photo. It should be encouraged to report in that thread when that occurs.

I don't need to say why.

And as much as I would like that middle ground, it's still an Animal Crossing forum. I don't really care for specific restrictions that cater to adults either.

I'd rather just have the thread gutted at that point.

now after the “low effort” accusation during the valentine’s day event, i’m even more reluctant to participate ever again. the entry in question was visibly NOT low-effort and clearly had work put into it, so if they got accused of low-effort,

But when people get two nominations, I too wonder why didn’t someone else get nominated who didn’t get the prize already; maybe have a special mention along with their entries also being displayed for those who already got nominated? Or something else.

I again would like to suggest categories like: most funny, most improved, most innovative, etc. Would love it to apply to acnh designs too.
I’m curious how staff determines what is low effort and what is not. Also how the staff picks favorites. Even though I try with my drawings I worry they may seem low effort to some. It’s why I wasn’t sure about entering the art events for Valentine’s Day.

I also do wonder why if a person can only win one prize for staff favorites do they get multiple nominations in one event instead of a special mention like Dun suggests. That way one or more people have a chance at getting a staff favorite prize. Like I said in the other thread I know I won’t be getting a staff favorite but it would be nice for others to have more of a chance. I also like the idea of different categories.

Randomly jumping back to the WDYLL discussion, I would be a little sad if the whole thread was erased just cause it holds a lot of memories from when I was more active in 2014. I completely agree with the no one under 18 posting, but to completely ban selfies altogether might be too much. Whatever is decided though I'll support it! I know keeping the kids safer is probs more important then my nostaglia

I guess what im trying to say is id like some simpler events lol (and I probably shouldn't have much of an opinion since I haven't participated in an event in ages so sorry everyone/staff)
Agreed, I skipped out on some of these events that felt like there were so many steps involved I just didn't want to get into it. I know some people like them, just maybe there could be more simple alternatives in addition to those. The most fun events for me are the ones where you just play video games.

I also agree with another point made earlier that it would be nice if some of the older collectibles were rereleased. Maybe a few alongside the new ones each time there is an event. Also thinking of collectibles, this is something I'm not sure if some people will agree with or it may be difficult to implement. But I've thought maybe there should be a limit to how many duplicate copies of the same collectible a single member can own. It just seems unfair when one person has their profile full of the same thing while others would like to have just one, or they just hoard all these extra copies to try to sell them for a ton of tbt.

Thanks for considering my feedback.

I've been away for a bit cause of life stuff so there was a lot of things that were mentioned or covered already. I read through all of the posts. I feel like I covered a lot that I wanted to in my one post in the What's your current opinion on this site?

So there's not a lot more I can add to what I already said.

Staff Favorites/Influx of Art
I agree with what Crash said and it's pretty much what I said on my original post in that thread. This is an Animal Crossing forum not an artist site. I like art and there's a lot of awesome creative artists here. But there's been so many members here who have expressed what I or Crash have mentioned and either left or no longer participate in the events because of this. I feel like there's a divide with our forum on this consensus. There's a lot doubling down on the art part and going full speed ahead. I've always mentioned how I think there needs to be more tasks during events that aren't about art. It just seems that there's something like 90% art tasks and like 10% other stuff.

This is coming from someone who just recently started doing events more actively, 2021 and forward, the art part of the events feels a lot more strict. I'm not even talking presently with the 'effort' situation. I'm talking like 2022 or so. It feels like the events are catered towards veteran participants. So in its baby stages the events/art tasks were more lax and as the years went on staff pushed the envelope to match the experience of their participants. A few years ago out of curiosity I went digging to see what old events were like. The staff favorites back then would've been considered low effort by their standards now. This isn't an art site though, so there shouldn't be some kind of bar they keep raising for what is acceptable.

I'm saying this all without any disappointment of my chance in getting a staff favorite. I don't care about that. But what I do care about is how exclusive the events feel to a lot of members to the point that they either left, don't do them, or have expressed how hurt they are. I never thought about it, but if picking a member to win more than one staff favorite doesn't net them anything extra why not just put them down as honorable mentions so that someone else can have a chance?

Different event tasks
I really liked the canvas crossing event. There wasn't any winner there. It was just members gifting other members art. I do hope this comes back in some capacity. I suspect the stocking stuffers was supposed to be a return to it, but it was kind of bad timing with it being during Christmas and all. I only managed to have enough time to do one, but overall there wasn't a lot of participants that time because it was during a very busy and probably not ideal time for many.

Misc.
I also really like the hug reaction. I know that's kind of dead now, but I've only just now had time to come here and read this thread. It would be nice if there was some spacing between the reactions in case of a misclick, but I don't know enough about design and coding to know if that's too much effort. And it's something I can deal with anyway. It's a nice reaction for certain threads because before hug there was only like and love. It always felt to be in poor taste to me to even use like, especially in the what is bothering you thread.

I also agree with what others have said about 'do not respond' ect. Through the years I've been here there have been a lot of alarming posts about self-harm. Everyone doesn't like unsolicited advice from time to time, but if you're going to post concerning messages you should expect people to reach out. A forum is for social interactions. So even if what you're posting isn't concerning and you're just expressing how much you hated, loved, or thought some game was a steaming pile of garbage, you're going to have someone respond to your posts.

What do you look like?
Also, I forget that the selfie thread is a thing. I never used it and never intend to. I will say this though, I used to go on an official Sega forum. There was a similar thread. Out of curiosity I checked it and found the picture of someone I knew. Not that well, but they lived where I did. They always gave me lowkey creepy vibes and always made me feel super uncomfortable. Turns out I was right about them being a disgusting creep. They're now a registered sex offender and were imprisoned for having pictures of minors. I currently have a stalker that makes my life a living hell. I don't think the thread is necessary. Even if you make it accessible and viewable only by forum members, that child predator was a registered member.

The last thing I want to address was mentioned in the unofficial thread, but I don't think it was brought up here. About how warnings and moderation don't feel like they're equal. There's probably a better word for that, but I've been running on little sleep and tons of hours of work lol. A lot of members have already brought this to attention in the previous thread with different examples, but I can't confirm or deny any of those. I do know I got at least two warnings, one where some member was hurt by fake friends manipulating them (no on here) and I replied to them how I had similar friends and how hurt I was by it and I used an abbreviation that while was a curse, was not directed to anyone. And yeah I deserved that warning, but then I would see other members using abbreviated curse words all the time and even staff members without repercussions. It doesn't bother me that I got a warning for that, but you should hold everyone accountable to that same level.

May I present, my two suggestions on improving this site (at least in sidebars):
  • Collectible folders, where you can place your favorite collectibles or some collectibles for a particular sidebar. If you deactivate it, you deactivate all collectibles in the folder. If you hide it, you hide all collectibles in the folder.
  • An add-on that allows you to choose between 5x2 and 6x2 sidebars.
I made these suggestions frequently in the past few months, but now there’s an official thread on feedback, I might suggest them here as well.

On the topic of events and art, I do agree that there do seem to be too many art-based tasks for an Animal Crossing forum. Like, when I was event staff on a Kpop forum in the past, most of our events were focused on Kpop. We did have art/non-Kpop tasks sometimes, like coloring in a drawing of an egg for Easter, but most of the games we hosted were things like guessing the Kpop MV a screenshot was from, guessing the member of a Kpop group, guessing the common factor between three Kpop artists, guessing a Kpop song just from hearing a few seconds of it, and things like that. I feel like more Animal Crossing/Nintendo game focused tasks would be nice.

Also, I believe it was in the previous thread that it was brought up, but I do think support for user-hosted events could be nice. On the aforementioned Kpop forum, we used to have a thread where users could submit proposals for events they wanted to host, and if approved we would provide the prizes for the event in the form of currency, badges(I think that's what they were called. They were images that went under users' avatars, somewhat similar to collectibles), and such. Collectibles from previous events and TBT would probably make good prizes. Of course, the number of user-hosted events and the prizes should be kept to a reasonable amount

Hello everyone,

Thank you for all the feedback so far! We really do appreciate hearing your ideas for improving the forum.

I would like to post a reminder that singling out one of our staff members to publicly criticize them is against our Rules.
  • Do not target, harass, publicly criticize, or make snide remarks towards staff members of The Bell Tree. As volunteers, staff members devote their free time to running the forum and should be allowed to do so without being targeted.
For now, all posts that appear to be targeting our staff have been unapproved so they can be properly reviewed. If one of your posts has been removed, it does not necessarily mean you are in any trouble. We just need time to sort through everything and determine a course of action.

In the meantime, please remember the thread guidelines as stated in the OP.
When leaving feedback, please be sure it's:
  • Constructive, not just critical.
  • Understanding and cooperative, not accusatory.
  • Respectful to other community members, including the staff.
  • Specific, with examples if applicable.

We will be addressing the Valentine's event feedback specifically, probably sooner rather than later. With all of us in different time zones and busy with real life, it sometimes takes a while to coordinate even simple responses because we do consider different viewpoints from multiple staff members.

Our goal in this thread is also to present actionable items. Making a statement may appease people temporarily, but we are trying to come at each topic from an angle of, "What can we do to make it better going forward?" That way we can provide you with lasting results.

If you have further comments regarding this particular topic, I would suggest you raise your concerns in CTS so we can have a proper discussion. We are not dismissing your feedback, but it is difficult for us to keep up with this thread in real time.

Again, we thank all of you for your suggestions and input so far. Please keep them coming!

Ah yes, my user-hosted events. While I believe we should have any kind of event if the staff would let us have user-hosted events, I did think ahead of time that there should be restrictions and limits. For instance, there should be no cooking activities or other activities that require adult supervision (like a furniture design event where you make real furniture). As for collectibles to be sold or distributed during the event, imposter collectibles and weird dolls are better off if kept rare and not easier to distribute. I don’t know why, but we have to respect that if we want to run our own events.
