Random tangent:
A number of people were released from the roster last week, one of them being Sonya DeVille, a member of the stable Pure Fusion Collective alongside Shayna Baszler and Zoey Stark. Admittedly, since I don't watch the regular shows and kinda lapsed in viewing the premium live events for a bit of last year, I wasn't altogether familiar with her. But this got me thinking about Shayna Baszler's position in the company. I'm a bit of a workrate person and I've always been a fan of Shayna's from back when she was in NXT in the black & gold era. I know people aren't all that high on her due to charisma, and I know that title wins nowadays always want to have a bit of a marketability aspect to them, but honestly, I wish we could go back to some of that Wild West Attitude Era type of booking where some members of the roster just get chances to shine even if they're not one of the company's top stars. Like, give Shayna a title run, just let her beat the hell out of these girls, lol. She's not LA Knight or Steve Austin on the microphone, but she doesn't need to be, she's just a badass and that should be good enough for something.
All hail The Queen of Spades.
The change from her
awesome original theme music to the generic song she has now sure doesn't help. But then, everyone save for a handful of people on the roster have worse theme music because of Def Rebel. The Royal Rumbles over the past couple years have been testament to that, when you don't know who the heck is coming out because the music's so generic.
Natalya has practically been in this position her entire career and she's another woman who I wish they could've given some shine to in this way, unfortunately a long stretch of her career was under Vince's reign and they never bothered to give her anything that overwrote the dumb fart gimmick from years ago. She's solidly a jobber to the stars and practically has one foot out the door since she's more of a trainer, so nothing will ever really happen for her, which I accepted a long time ago, but is just kind of unfortunate. She's from the Hart family, for crying out loud. Deserved way better.
Asuka's a bit better off than those two but she REALLY should have won her first WrestleMania all those years ago. It's never happening again. What a waste.
Expanding on this, I really dislike the whole thing where you have great performers who, regardless of if they're charismatic on the mic or not, are seen as such good performers and sellers that they just end up relegated to that role forever. Dolph Ziggler/Nic Nemeth is like the textbook example of this, though granted, considering they gave him the freaking name Dolph Ziggler in this company, he was always going to have a ceiling.
Also how was Claudio Castagnoli, who can speak five languages, performed very impressive feats of strength that the crowds loved and has more raw strength than his physique would suggest, and is a great performer, never in a more prominent position in WWE than, like, in The Bar tag team with Sheamus? Which isn't a knock on The Bar, I loved The Bar, but you know what I mean. Claudio's awesome. He's not The Rock on the microphone, I don't care. You want marketability? You want an international brand ambassador? Looking at him.
Why does he have to languish in AEW?
TL;DR: Just spice things up a bit and give some of these underappreciated people time in the spotlight. They don't even have to be long reigns or anything, heck, even secondary titles like Intercontinental and US are good enough, but come on. There's a thing I've heard a bunch in recent years after getting into Xavier Woods's UpUpDownDown, and which has also seemingly spread into the locker room at large, where there are certain performers who are great but underappreciated, and people say they deserve their flowers. And then when sometimes people do get more focus, they're "finally getting their flowers." I think we need more flower distribution.
Mini tangent: I know it probably has some relevant meaning to MMA or something but why would you name your group Pure Fusion Collective? Not marketable, forgettable. Literally who?
