Animal Crossing was a game that I never thought would ever make it over to western shore. There are many amazing Japanese games that don't because developers fear that western audience would not like or appreciated. Take the Yakuza/Shenmue franchise for example. Yakuza end up being a success, Shenmue quite the opposite.

But there are many problems when a game meant for the Asian market goes oversea. Problems that isn't always monetary. Asian culture practice obedience, honor, family values, and love for one another. It is an unwritten code of conduct to treat one another the way you want to be treated.

Western culture on the other hand is all about individual and freedom of self expression. Everything is a competition in western society, everyone is always trying to one up another person. People say things without ever meaning it. Small talk isn't something common in Asia. If someone ask you "how are you doing" they actually mean it. I believe this is also a case in certain European countries like Norway as well.

In Asia, we don't play game alone. We play together, we go to game center or go outside and connect with other people. We don't care what games you play or what system you own, we just want to play with YOU. There are no PCmasterrace jerk who disrespect anyone who doesn't have a PC powerful enough for gaming or console fanboys who constantly feel superior for owning one console over another. We don't care. We love all games from boardgame to Tetris to handheld to console to pc to arcade, we love everything!

There is a lot of hate and anger in western society that doesn't exist in Asia. Asia is the safest continent on earth and it is a result of a long standing culture of discipline and family values. Crime is dishonorable, cheating is dishonorable, and in Japan and most of Asia, you are guilty until proven innocent. A system that work much better to discourage crimes. Hence why crime rates in Asia from the poorest to the richest country is extremely low.

Now that I got some history out of the way, why is Time Travelers met with so much disdain?

Let take cheating out of the equation temporary. People who time travel are directly saying screw Nintendo and screw the entire AC community. I pay $60 for this game so I'm "entitle" to do what I want with it. I'm putting my own self interest before everyone else and screw the community if they don't revolve around me. Or "dude it just a game, chillax".

We live in the age of instant gratification and the "me" generation. I want this and I want it NOW. I'm entitle to everything because waiting is for loser. This is the entitlement generation and there are a bunch of entitle people in the AC community. Or people who use the excuse that it just a game, and it not that serious. Well in Asia we have a common saying "respect the little things in life for they end up representing big things". If you can't even respect the basic fundamental of Animal Crossing because it just a "game", I wonder how you will treat those other things in your life that actually matter?

Something else I want to mention is I hear a lot about people who don't abuse the online economy end up doing so because their reason is "well other people do it so why should I miss out on it". You really couldn't take the high road here?

Now let talk about time travelers. I have heard literally every single excuse by Time-Travelers possible as this isn't the only forum I visit. One of the most common excuses is
"well if Nintendo didn't want time-traveling in their game, then they would have put a stop to it". Really? You couldn't moderate your own self? Does everything have to have a "rule" put in place for you to not mess with? Is having any sort of principle not part of your genetic blueprint? Or are you too cool for rules to apply to you?

Nintendo can't even make New Horizon a complete game much less put rules in place to discourage time travelers. They already took out the in-game clock in New Leaf which was there in case it was needed, not to be use to get your daily fixes on. Now we have this constant update of a game thanks to TTers spoiling everything otherwise. If the game was finish, maybe then Nintendo would have time to put in things that would deters TT such as villagers leaving without permission, large amount of weed spawn, flowers dying off (especially hybrids), penalty such as missing in game items, and etc... Right now is not the time to fix time traveling when the game lack far too much content. With the crisis situation right now, everything is really a hot mess.

There are pro and con of both western and eastern culture, however when it come to a share community, we couldn't be anymore opposite. A game like AC meant to be a friendly family game end up being full of conflict over here. This is not the case in Asia. We like cutsy stuff that is consider "taboo" in America, or why you thinks so many things from Japan become uncensor over here? Everyone is always so quick to judge, you like Anime, you must be a weeb, you like little cute animals, you must not be S and etc... In Asia, there is no category for boys and girls toys, you want to play with dolls or action figure, go for it! This mindset is the reason America does not get every good thing from Japan. And if I'm a developer, not only do I have to spend money for translation, handling, custom, but I also have to worry about how people treat my game and my work. Why do it when the Asian market is the biggest gaming market with over 54 countries in the world.

There are so many unique games that most of you guys have never heard off, from MMORPG to other type of games. They will never see the light of day in America. So its disappointing when we get a unique game like Animal Crossing and its being exploited because of greed and self-interest.

What is so hard about loving one another, is it more rewarding to nickel and dime your fellow gamers for every bells in every nook and cranny then seeing how happy they are when they get something they really want as a gift?

Thank you for reading, this literally took forever.

Play the game how you want. If someone wants to time travel then so be it as it does not effect my game at all.. I've TT a few times one day ahead to get bridges built or get mail from ordered stuff..

I don't understand why the anti TT crowd is so vocal that they feel the need to disrespect others and try to tell everyone how they should play their game.

Meh, everyone should enjoy the game how they want and should not be judged, disrespected and put down for it..

I TT a lot, but only one day at a time as @raqball stated. I don't tell everyone they should TT just because I like to.

Time travelling definitely encourages other to try and “rush” to get ahead and there’s no way it DOESNT make it difficult for legit players like me. Why? Because even if they say they’re not trying to, they still are abusing the features to get nook miles and bells which makes it more difficult for people who have to get them “legit” by waiting each day as the ABD gives you nook miles every day. It is cheating and it’s wrong.

Who defined what is legit and what is not?
I am not hacking the game coding to my benefit,

Just wanted to point out that Shenmue came out in the west and was a commercial success. The problem is that the original Shenmue was, at the time, the most expensive game ever (to develop), and with the commercial failure of the Dreamcast (which was more due to the upcoming PS2 also being a DVD player - something that made a HUGE difference as it was a selling point - and SEGA's previous screw ups dating back to the days of the Mega Drive/Genesis, when they released the Sega CD and the 32x), the sales of Shnemue didn't cover the costs of its development

Both Yakuza 1 and 2 were released in the west for the PS2, I played them both at the time. Yakuza was a niche title until Yakuza Zero came out for the PS4 and the mainstream media finally recognized the absurd quality of the series.

I really dislike the declaration of how a certain culture is.

We've got people in the US who don't time travel. And no way am I going to believe there isn't someone in Asia (let alone Japan) who hasn't time traveled.

My Asian-American butt is totally chosing to time travel because it's too annoying to kick out a villager and why can't I make a slight adjustment to a bridge without it taking two days to fix? You can call that excuses but I consider it a general gripe in the game. To each their own.

Kinda amazed at how someone can write an essay on 2 things that don't really correlate just for a children's party game bruh
I TT yet everyone I trade with I'm very kind and let them get the items for what they can offer and do equal ground, surprising, I know
You can't blame a play-style of how people want to play for the "economic depression" of animal crossing, which is always exaggerated to be frank, just trade with people that have good prices you can afford that simple

I had 3 NL towns, two of which I did TT (one was dedicated to cycling villagers and giving them *for free*). People should be able to play how they want, although I agree that the exploitation is a huge turn-off.

I am not sure I would want to claim people have certain personality traits because they do/do not TT; sweeping generalizations isn't really a "high road." This site isn't bad, people are far less generous on discord, reddit, etc. It's why I came back here after years of being inactive once NL community kinda died.

As someone who is both "eastern" and "western" and interacts with people from across the world (including working in the tech industry in Japan), I find this take... pretty disingenuous. Get angry at people selling villagers for hundreds of real US dollars, not people who just want to experience the game in a different way. It's analogous to speedrunning a game. There's no moral or cultural ties to this.

You realize how big Asia is right? You know the amount of crime in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Phillipines, Thailand, Vietnam, China...is extremely high?
You can't just make blanket statements to try to support some notion that is completely irrelevant.

You also realize the crime in Japan? Sexual assault and rape cases with perpetrators that serve no time or are not prosecuted just like every other country. Rape of Nanjing. Sexism, racism, discrimination all occur in Japan. High suicide rates, poverty, declining birth rates due to societal issues are all prevalent in Japan.
So, no, you don't really get to say hateful acts, crime, problematic laws, social issues don't exist in Asia and Japan. Every country has it's issues, just because Japan may be lower statistically (which many factors can be attributed to) does not make it support whatever argument you're trying to connect with time traveling.

I wasn't expecting to come onto an Animal Crossing forum to read a good ole bashing on the US and western culture. Oh my.
I don't have a problem with bashing a culture IF the arguments used are valid, but he brought wrong info over to validate a point.

One can honestly do a little research before coming up with a list like this.

I don't TT and I'm able to rack up quite a decent about of nmt and bells through daily nook mile quests, trading and turnips. Others TTing doesn't make it difficult for "legit" players at all you just have to rely on more than the daily nook miles and get more strategic.

It's literally a game about talking animals, let people play it how they want it's not that deep lmao

This is funny because it almost feel like deja vu, which some once thought was something that time travellers experienced lol

At least none of the others had this particular absolutely rancid take I guess.
it's not a proper day on belltree if someone isn't trying to stir the hornet's nest regarding timetravel ^__^'

I'm hijacking the thread, let's talk about how Celeste HATES my island and never visits :'(
