I dunno if it’s because I don’t have many good items to sell or something but I have had only one person buy an item from me. People who run shops or sell items without a shop, what do you think brings people to you?

We're talking in game items right?

Just keep at it. Keep bumping everything you can and it make yourself very available. My shop was the same exact way, my first day I had like 1 customer. But I reeeeaally wanted to get rid of my hoard without selling to Nooks, so everyday I kept bumping it when I could. After like 2 or 3 days I started getting consisntent buyers.

Be realistic with your prices. Regular recipes no longer sell for 5tbt (I'm not counting flowers crowns/wreaths and seasonal recipes). Many people already have most if not all the regular recipes, so their price has gone down to 2tbt-free.

• i think the main thing is what you’re offering - unorderables (esp more ‘uncommon’ ones like rarer art, birthday items, villager pics, etc) and catalog services tend to get the most traction as that’s what people are mostly interested in, currently. diys and flowers likely won’t do anything for you as most people seem to have an abundance of those themselves so i don’t think anyone’s looking to pile more of those on, hence why the majority of diy + hybrid threads are either free or priced hella cheap

• speaking of prices, those are also very important. i don’t have much advice for this as prices and worth always seem to fluctuate so i would maybe look at other people’s shops/threads to get a general idea of what pricing should be depending on the item. unorderables can range anywhere from 5-50 tbt/nmt depending on what it is meanwhile orderables can go for 1-10 tbt depending on who you look at. but again, this might be the hardest aspect since prices are never a concrete thing; it all depends on who you buy from, really. not everyone’s pricing will be the exact same.

• this is a more personal thing but i’m drawn to shops that are visually pleasing. and i don’t mean you have to commission anyone to make a huge banner or to make one yourself but ensuring that your thread is organized, easy to look through and is grammatically correct definitely doesn’t hurt; any confusion might not attract customers.

• lastly, and this is the most important one; don’t be discouraged. not every shop is the same and the market is always changing; whether you only get one customer or a hundred, you’re doing your best and that’s all that counts. but on a less corny note, the new horizons subforums have been kind of dead lately since there hasn’t been any new content in a while; the new month + autumn starting revved things up a bit but it might be a bit of a ghost town until something new happens. so if you find yourself getting discouraged, just think that it’s not personal; trading and animal crossing has just been a lil bit slow lately aha.

• bonus point that i only thought of 0.2 seconds ago before i hit send LMAO - make sure your thread title isn’t too complicated or underwhelming, either. again, don’t like,, spam a bunch of emojis and you don’t even have to use the new ‘title colour’ feature that was implemented which only lasts for like,, a week and costs tbt so it isn’t that worth it, anyway imo aha but including what type of stuff + services you offer is essential. most people won’t click on a “check out my shop!” type thread - you gotta summarize what exactly it is you’re offering so that you attract interested customers rather than people who’ll just click and leave.

good luck! <3

Omg wait yes what xara said about shops looking nice. There have been plenty of times that I go on a shop thread and back out because it's too busy looking, too cluttered, or just straight up not organized. There are plenty of other shops that organize their listings, so why would someone go throu a cluttered layout? You don't need a fancy banner or animated graphics either, spoilers, table charts and sites that you create wishlists on all work.

For organizing, you can put-
Buying/your wishlist
Selling
Trading
Cataloguing
Rules/other

-all in their own spoiler. You can also post reserve each post to be somethin like that.

I need to stress this too. It might just be a personal thing but if the thread is not organized or is just too long with rules and blah blah text, I usually say later. Make it easy for people to find your items or people will just give up.

Does this mean it is also not a good idea to post a huge amount of items you wish to buy or sell at a time?

If you look at my thread titles for my shops (in my signature), they may stand-out based on what I'm selling, or the emojis popping. Advertising is key in my opinion.
