villagers that became dreamies due to social media

not necessarily dreamie, but i agree, all the twitter memes of dom have made me think he's adorable. too bad he's a jock, lmfaooo. would have loved if he was a different personality. i do think it's fun to observe from afar which characters develop their own following - lately i've been seeing a ton of roald fanaticism, which is just honestly delightful. haha

Marshal for sure! After seeing him enough in screen shots and the like, he grew on me before i even had him! I actually think i registered here and started posting just so i can adopt him.

i always thought of merry as the poor man’s felicity until i saw a twitter post or smth talking about her double chin and how she hides it in her pics. i swooned and immediately decided the goofy chubby kitty must be mine. i even have felicity’s amiibo loooool. merry is in the mail and arriving on friday.

None really. My dream villagers were chosen based on me seeing them for the first time and decide if I like them or not. Social media and the popularity of villagers doesn't brainwash me into taking a popular villager because they're everywhere.

But I do believe there was one if it counts, and that is Eugene. While spoiling myself on the new villagers for New Leaf, I saw a Koala wearing shades, and he won me over. He was the main reason why New Leaf got even more hyped on me than it already was.

I admit, my interest in Canberra comes from sad threads on Reddit where she was shown mistreated by the villagers and the 'main character' (you) because of her so-called ugliness. I was very sad to see these comics, I even cried, I was in pain for a long time ... so I hope to meet her one day and offer her a home worthy of the name.
I think it's not exactly the same as what you are talking about, guys, but...

For me, I'd have to say Dom as well! Originally I didn't care for his design and passed him up on mystery islands a few times. At some point I was searching for a jock villager and decided to take him in due to the hype and the fact that he was(or is?) the most popular villager in Japan. He is well worth the hype, and an adorable addition to any island :giggle:

mm.. i have gotten a couple dreamies for my own island? like octavian and marshal (marshal because he left my ex’s island and he’s my birthday twin), but i’d say my own PERSONAL dreamie is,, maybe merry? she’s my mothers birthday twin and i already have most of my family’s birthday twins except for her! and she’s also quite pretty :)) so yeah, merry or maybe apollo.

Social media has encouraged me to try out villagers that just dont look interesting to me, but it hasn't made me like a villager. I gotta meet villagers and see how they interact and are animated or I have to just like them upon first sight (how they are designed, I like zebras for example so I like Savannah) before I can like any of them.

Raymond for example I just don't care for, but I did make the effort to find him through dreaming to meet him because of how so many people seem to love him.
I am thinking it is because he is a cat which are popular in general, but also he is stylish. No one can deny that cat is stylish lol. But I just don't particularly care for him. Now, if they made a stylish dog to rival him.... lol
As for cat villagers, I am not a big fan, but I really really like Purrl. I find her cute and I personally just think cats should be cute or have interesting patterns or colors. Katt is one I find interesting and I like.

Dom I feel like is really popular because he is a cute jock... and those eyes. People in general do tend to like round, small, and pastel like things. He is also fluffy, which is also often associated with cuteness or comfort. I know cuteness is subjective, but round and small often gives a cute vibe and I think he very well may be the roundest jock villager while still having a perceived small stature at the same time. I really like Dom, but I think the sheep are cute in general.

Why many people don't like Megan is beyond me. Alot of people tend to like things that are bears because bears are often an image of childhood or comfort (teddy bears) She became my favorite normal villager. However I really like purple, and she gives me lisa frank vibes which was a huge fad when I grew up. So maybe mine has nostalgia attached to it. She doesn't seem plain to me at all, and actually seems a little weird. However a common complaint I have seen is that she is plain and boring. She is just a purple bear or that she is too purple or that her mouth (which I feel gives her some character) is ugly or unsightly.

But social media showing off villagers does give you exposure to the villager you would normally not have. You may not see such villager interacting with a firefly for example unless you had them on your island for a while. I think it helps with keeping an open mind with villagers you don't pick first at the very least. :lemon:

Wow the timing of the resurrection of this thread is quite appropriate with the new villagers coming 😆

It's true that social media has the power to create big trends concerning the love of the community for a villager... (it happens with Raymond, Merry, Roald, etc... thanks to memes).

For my concerns, I kind of don't care of online popularity in general, but I have to admit that the story around Audie inspired by this old AC fan lady made me more interested by Audie at the time.
The only other one that I think right now is Sasha, the ambiguity around his gender and the fact he made everyone talking about some topics that matters to me kind of made him an non-binary icon in my heart hahaha

Yeah for sure. I did like the designs of Audie and Raymond anyway, but it was definitely the fact I'd seen them everywhere that made me hold onto them for so long. Same with Marshal and Molly. I nearly took Judy as well when she turned up in my campsite, but decided against it. Now I have none of those I mentioned at all.

My current villagers are Boots, Alfonso, Chevre, Nan, Chrissy, Francine, Flurry, Shari, Bubbles and Grizzly. I think the most popular of those are Chrissy and Francine and I do see them paired a lot because they're sisters, which is cute and again influenced my decision to bring them both in, same with Chevre and Nan and their connection to each other.

I predict Sasha will become a villager we'll see in a lot of islands. That's ok though, I think go with your heart and if you like the more popular ones then go for it!

I think I’m actually less inclined to favor villagers that become super popular. I love the excitement of having a fresh new face in town, so seeing posts about the same 15 villagers over and over on every island makes me feel a little bored of them, like they wouldn’t feel as “new” as a villager that gets less publicity. I believe Lolly is the only Tier 1 I’ve ever loved; she lived in my New Leaf town for years and was too adorable to part with.

Social media doesn't really effect me that much. I know a lot folks here like Marshal but I don't really care for him. I think for me its the Shiny New Toy syndrome and less to do with social media. Shino is pretty popular at the moment. I really like Shino. A lot. However, she and others, such as Sasha and Ione, are going to be all over the place because they're the new "Raymonds" and that they're the new villagers with very good designs.

The popularity of certain villagers, to the point they're everywhere in the NH community, makes me less excited to stumble across them.

On the flip side a lack of attention from the community does inadvertently make me like villagers more. I get why some people may not like Chow, but Puck and Stinky? Cole? I feel they have such adorable designs but they rarely seem to make it onto the radar.

Cole is very cute it's true 🖤

Marshal was famous back in New Leaf, which IIRC, Animal Crossing wasn't very big in social media, and social media itself wasn't as big.

Not sure about social media but I will definitely say that Dobie became a sensation overnight. Back in New Leaf it was rare to see anybody talk about or have Dobie in town. This of course was due to him being a RV Villager.

But with New Horizons, man, I saw so many people start having him as their resident cranky or old villager.

Social media never truly influenced my villager choices, especially the popular ones. But it did made me curious about the villager. Still, I never actively sought them.

I'm not on social media but i can usually get some kind of inkling here. ex. tons of threads about sasha. However, I will say it's kind of annoying when you like a villager or something else that is closely linked to social media or a meme, then people always assume that's why you like it (as if you can't like something for any other reason).

pretty much all the new villagers that have been added to new horizons? like raymond, audie, judy ect. as shameful as it is to admit....yes i have judy and audie on my island. i took audie from a mystery island {even though i don't like peppies very much, i think her personality compliments her vibe very well, so i LOVE her} and judy is for my space themed island i swear lol.
i honestly cant see the love for example, raymond. his design is sooo bland and monochrome, his house sucks {why would you want to live in an OFFICE!?!?} and his catchphrase doesn't suit him very well. even though he's been out for a loong time, he's still super hyped up. i just don't get it?! i don't like him very much obviously. on so i can't see why people love him. he even dresses like he's living in a workplace. i wouldn't want some sad, depressing-looking office worker on my island.
still, even if i can see my own personal appeal behind audie and judy, villagers in acnh feel more copied-and-pasted than ever, so they have pretty much no value outside of appearance.
i'm guessing it has something to do with their general vibe? like people hate barold for example {i love barold though he's great}, his weird fish lips and huge nerdy glasses paired with his species {cub} and lazy personality...it's not a good look for him in most peoples eyes. the beard and the pudgy-ness of cubs gives a feeling of a general lack of hygiene, which it makes him look like some kind of nerdy, shut-in slob.
but take a villager like audie for example, she's really cute, she has a fun color scheme, she's a wolf {wolves are cool looking i guess} her clothes are nice, and her personality suits her really well. when you analyze it like that, it kinda makes more sense, i guess!?
