Social media has encouraged me to try out villagers that just dont look interesting to me, but it hasn't made me like a villager. I gotta meet villagers and see how they interact and are animated or I have to just like them upon first sight
(how they are designed, I like zebras for example so I like Savannah) before I can like any of them.
Raymond for example I just don't care for, but I did make the effort to find him through dreaming to meet him because of how so many people seem to love him.
I am thinking it is because he is a cat which are popular in general, but also he is stylish. No one can deny that cat is stylish lol. But I just don't particularly care for him. Now, if they made a stylish dog to rival him.... lol
As for cat villagers, I am not a big fan, but I really really like Purrl. I find her cute and I personally just think cats should be cute or have interesting patterns or colors. Katt is one I find interesting and I like.
Dom I feel like is really popular because he is a cute jock... and those eyes. People in general do tend to like round, small, and pastel like things. He is also fluffy, which is also often associated with cuteness or comfort. I know cuteness is subjective, but round and small often gives a cute vibe and I think he very well may be the roundest jock villager while still having a perceived small stature at the same time. I really like Dom, but I think the sheep are cute in general.
Why many people don't like
Megan is beyond me. Alot of people tend to like things that are bears because bears are often an image of childhood or comfort
(teddy bears) She became my favorite normal villager. However I really like purple, and she gives me lisa frank vibes which was a huge fad when I grew up. So maybe mine has nostalgia attached to it. She doesn't seem plain to me at all, and actually seems a little weird. However a common complaint I have seen is that she is plain and boring. She is just a purple bear or that she is too purple or that her mouth
(which I feel gives her some character) is ugly or unsightly.
But social media showing off villagers does give you exposure to the villager you would normally not have. You may not see such villager interacting with a firefly for example unless you had them on your island for a while. I think it helps with keeping an open mind with villagers you don't pick first at the very least.
