Waiting for NH: Nookipedia wiki is actually doing a Top10 of most popular villagers

Can someone explain Bob's appeal? Is it just experience? Did he show up a lot for people in past games? Is it because he is purple and a cat? Inquiring minds want to know. (Mostly my inquiring mind, but same difference.)

I don't get it, why Bob?

I don't get it either. I find Bob unattractive, Ankha uninspired and Coco downright awful - like town resetting awful.

But I get my tastes do not correspond to everyone or even the majority of people's tastes. I'm also happy none of my favorites are in the Top 10, and I'd be surprised if any were in the Top 25. It's OK, it doesn't have to be about me. It's OK.

I just find it interesting. And now we have better data to measure which villager is popular, and which isn't, which was not the case before.

I'm not sure if page view popularity equates with popularity in terms of fan favorites.

It's not always popularity that drives people to check out villagers on Nookipedia. I tend to look up villagers on there more so if a character I forget is mentioned, so I have a face for the name. Also, if there is some sort of popular fan theory on a character, I might check the stock of info on Nookipedia to see if there's anything substantial to the theory. I'm sure there's a whole plethora of different reasons to make a search on a character though, actual likability included. These guys could literally be the top ten favorites, but I don't know if I'm fully confident about that.

This is what I was talking about too—that there can be many reasons factoring into page views other than popularity. Even overall popularity, and popularity specifically in terms of wanting that villager in town, are two different things.

I also agree with what you said about looking up villagers you don't know well; I'd say the majority of my searches are for villagers people list in the "who is the ugliest" or "i'd reset if i got x" threads lol

Breaking news, folks! I'm one of the users who manages the Nookipedia Twitter account, and I wanted to share some insider info with you all. :p (This is going to get posted tomorrow, so you get it a little early.)

So I took another look at the numbers, and as it turns out... I had selected 2020 as the time period to retrieve data, and so the top 10 Twitter countdown is just the top 10 for this year. Going back a full 365 days we see something a bit different. The top two remain the same, but others are rearranged or fall off the list.

I find it intriguing to see Cherry on this list, and I wonder if some of the users were looking for the fruit instead?

Wow ! Thanks Sunmarsh for dropping in and giving us more hindsight into Nookipedia’s stats. I know Nookipedia is a product of hard work from countless hard-working participants like you.

Cherry making the top 10 might very well be an odd statistic that can be arguably discarded.

Would you think villagers page stats a good measurement on tracking villagers popularity overall?

Kyle before Chief and Skye? KYLE?!

Yeah this is definitely strange.

Personally I can attest to having had that happen at least once. Then again, I think she’s also one of the early PC villagers, right?

Interesting data either way. Thanks for your work, and for sharing it with us here! :3

Wow this is super interesting. If I were to guess, in no particular order, I would've put these guys on the list of most popular:

Marshall

Julian

Merengue

Molly

Rosie

Goldie

Marina

Ankha

Bob

Diana

Are these statistics a good judge of overall popularity... yes and no. I think that it can be, generally, but there are certain things that throw off the data. (For example, if I pull data from even further back, villagers like Cece, Inkwell and Epona will enter the top 10, because of how many views their pages received when they were first announced.) Also I think that there is actually not a lot of variability in the data, and that most of the villagers are pretty equal in terms of popularity. So much so that even some of the top 10 could move around on a daily basis.

I wouldn’t have thought that most villagers had pretty much the same click views hence similar popularity. Thanks for those ipdates, sunmarsh!
