especially when you're having a hard time trading (for ex, error messages) you can respond immediately instead of refreshing your page whenever you're waiting for a reply!!!

IRC wouldn't really help, but there's always VMs which are essentially similar to what you want. I mean, it's not really difficult to just refresh a page every minute, or whenever you change pages on the forums, so it's really not needed.

IRC is fine, though. It is no different from what you're suggesting.
IRC is our instant messaging for the Bell Tree. You can easily join IRC by clicking the Chat tab located on top of the page under the banner. If the web based client isn't your choice, there are plenty of chat apps you can download to join our chatroom.
do you mean as in web-based that the site uses or IM profiles?
because if the latter doesn't exist, I can kinda understand why the staff wouldn't bother with that. specifically with how many children are on the site

idk i think there should be a distinct notification sound when you're online so you know when you have a new message
you can do that in irc.
that sounds like horrible pointless strain with the page needing to constantly refresh to check for new messages so

You can use the irc for IM-ing. If you have a registered nickname (use the IRC beginners guide) then you can pm anyone on the IRC server with minimal fuss. Or you can use Chatzy. Integrating another chat that can't be moderated or watched is a pretty bad idea considering the age group of the site.
