The season finale of The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs ended a few minutes ago and they finished the season with a zombie double feature.
The first movie was director Jorge Grau's 1974 movie Let Sleeping Corpses Lie, though it's known by a few other titles, one of which being what it was referred to throughout the showing tonight: The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue. I watched it for the first time a few years ago during one of my annual, month-long horror movie marathons in October. Good movie and it was nice to revisit it.
The second movie was director George A. Romero's 1985 classic Day of the Dead, the third movie in his "of the Dead" series and my personal favorite of his. Though I love Night of the Living Dead and the original 1978 Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead just has a bit that puts it on top for me; the zombie effects look their best, the kills are very memorable, the characters, tone and setting are great, and it has a great soundtrack. Speaking of which, if anyone's a Gorillaz fan and didn't know, the intro to their song M1 A1, where the guy is saying "Hello, is anyone there? Hello? Hellooooo?", along with the accompanying music that's set to, is from the intro of this movie. It's a great movie, so if that's of any interest, I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it.
I wasn't sure whether to watch it tonight since I plan to watch it on November 1st or 2nd to coincide with Día de los Muertos as per personal tradition, but I figured I might as well just go ahead anyhow since I love the movie. It was neat since they got Lori Cardille, Terry Alexander, and Jarlath Conroy, three of the important actors in the movie, to show up for a few segments to discuss their time filming the movie and discuss the film's legacy and such.
All in all, had a good time. A shame the season is over, but looking forward to whenever their next special is.
