What’s up with all the villager hate?

I’ve seen tons of people lately complaining about a certain villager in the campsite or on the island or whatever. Like, saying that they hate that villager, they’re ugly, or they’re so upset and can never get over the fact that they’re moving in. I get that people can have preferences, but I think sometimes people take this way too seriously.

Just some of my thoughts, I found that the game can be so much more enjoyable when to take things as they come and go. Trust me, I’ve been that person in the past. :)

I mean, I get why they're annoyed that they didn't get a villager they like. I'm the same way. However when they act like it's the end of the world or they're knocking on death's door, that's when it's ridiculous.

I just don't know how to make this one move out, I don't like squirrels and I'd rather have that place for someone a bit better. Randomized but something better.

i think it might be the fact that we’re forced to invite our first camper - if we weren’t, i don’t think anyone would be complaining aha

Just preference as you mentioned. I don't get overly upset, but I do get disappointed. But its all cool to me because well they can move out anyway. I wasn't happy with the villagers I started nor the one in the campsite but the one from the campsite already moved out.

I don't think taking things as they go and disliking villagers are two mutually exclusive things. Villager preferences are mostly based on appearance, so I don't think it's bad for people to dislike certain villagers and want them to move out/not appear. If the creators of the game intended to stick everyone with the villagers they started with, then the move out function wouldn't be a thing.

Sometimes I get a little upset if it's a villager I don't want but after they start living in my town I kinda grow on them. I think this hate mostly happens because the first camper is forced upon you but new horizons makes it more flexible with replacing villagers so it can be easily fixed in the further on in the game.

i understand the disappointment and i feel a twinge of it sometimes, of course. i'm only human haha and i'm down to let people play however they'd like to play.

that being said (in my circumstance) coming from new leaf - new horizon has so many more options and ways to eventually enable me to have the island/town of my dreams. and if i get a villager that i less than desire in my campsite tomorrow - that's alright. they'll leave eventually and i'll enjoy them until they do. we've only had this game for like a week, and i'm ready to play for literally years to come.

[edit] (potentially unpopular opinion - i also feel kinda bad reading the intense hate for some villagers - listen i know they're just pixels i get it, i just feel bad LMAO)

I feel like it's also because villagers take forever to leave in this game. I've gone weeks (I am a TTer for this purpose only aside from ordering stuff) trying to get a villager out and nobody wants to go.

It’s not really hate for me but some villager designs really make me cringe. Especially in the case of the camper, it has to be someone that doesn’t give you the creeps because they’re smug villagers and their dialogues are cute when you like the villager but borderline creepy when they look like weird dirty old men trying to make passes at you.

my first 2 villagers were Frita and Axel.

Frita.

"Frita is a brown sheep with fleece that appears to be made out of french fries. The back of her head resembles a burger and her face looks like a potato. The tips of her hooves are yellow, and her horns have red and yellow on them, presumably meant to resemble ketchup and mustard."

I wanted animals, not a McDonald's menu

I don't think people are overreacting when they have to spend at least a week with a villager whose design they really dislike. I got lucky with my only bad villager being Jambette (who got a little bit normalised for NH), but if I got a really ugly villager I wouldn't be happy about it either. And the villagers are a pretty big aspect of the game.

I don't get it either. The only one I get is that if someone had an intense fear of clowns and they got Pietro. Feeling immense dread when you boot up the game because it has a clown sheep in it would not be fun.

As long as they aren't personally attacking me or somebody for liking a "hated" villager or having an "undesirable" one in their town, I let people do what they want.

I 100% agree.
villagers are imo what makes this game amazing. different personalities, dialogues, outfits...
a friend of mine bought ACNH because I was hyped for it; he never watched a single video about the game, he didn't even know what AC was, and he was still unhappy about his starting villagers.

While I do have my own villager preferences, you won't see me throwing a full-out tantrum if I get a villager I dislike. There's a certain charm to allowing villagers to come and go, and having the opportunity to meet so many of them. That being said, I still have the amiibo for all of my favorites and plan to eventually get them all permanently in my town. But until I reach the point in my game where that's unlocked, I'm just going to enjoy the opportunity to meet some new faces.

The problem is really being forced to take a villager. The campsite forces you to take the very first one, regardless of who it is.

I'm not too concerned though, because I know I can move any villager I dislike out eventually.

lol I thought that at first too, but when I had her in New Leaf, she grew on me. I do think she actually is a bit downgraded now that she has the hot dog shirt as her default instead of wearing a scarf like sheep used to. She'd probably be better in another shirt.

I'm making my island with a certain theme in mind, and certain villagers don't match the society I have in mind.
