I feel like lions were all male as a way of mirroring how kangaroos were all female, but... We've gotten male kangaroos now, so we really do need female lions. My only issue with that would be... How would they be unique? The model would probably just be too similar to the tiger model.
No, it doesn't have to. There are male and female tigers, and as I far as I can tell, they both use the same model. They are simply painted uniquely, just like it happens with the other species. Plus, the face features are very different from that of lions. A female lion would need a model for herself due to the lack of a mane, but that doesn't make her similar to a tiger.
Also, remember that bulls and cows have personal models as well, despite technically being the same species
