Who else thinks that the Nintendo switch is a boring console?

It has absolutely 0 personality other than the joycon click noise. That was really nice at first but the rest of it is so barebones. I've loved the lifeline of the switch for the most part but it's becoming a bit stale now...

I think so too.
It had much potential. the entire concept was very unique, but that is where it ended. the console itself, other than design wise, lacks personality. in my opinion, i do not think that is debatable. the UI is very bland and unappealing. the 3DS had multiple unique themes with unique music and sound effects to accompany it, as well as the badge arcade. the switch really only has two default themes, both of which are nothing but visuals.

I am a little surprised Nintendo didn't put up wallpapers for pennies or more of the interesting switch editions. I felt like a bit more graphics could have been put on most of the editions tbh.
Though I can't say I'm a fan of the 2 screens of the DS family, they did put in more effort for nice editions. Maybe them having a lid helps, but joycons could have character faces and game logos more often.
I do think the Zelda editions of the switch and even the switchlite were the best ones released.
Maybe Nintendo could have done something with their game music and NOS.

It does surprise me considering the market of nintendo is towards families. Then again, many corporations are ditching color in favor of dull and lifeless designs.

I still expect the switch will become a massive nostalgia machine. Especially when the kids growing up now (as it's labeled generation alpha) take a larger presence online.

When that happens, it's likely that the console as a whole will be completely idolized.

NGL I miss the menu themes and music too. :,) The only "fun" thing about the Switch menu is that when you're unlocking your console you can press a random button other than A/B/X/Y and it will make a funny noise. (ty for bringing it up, Apples!) Other than that, it's just not the same.

In terms of the games available though, I wouldn't say it's boring. :) I mean the Switch as a whole, of course.

I think the concept of the Switch lived up to the hype personally, but in regards to the UI/OS then absolutely I think it's pretty bland 😭

Maybe I'm being biased with having modded the 3DS and having a ton of themes I've made, but even at that, there was still those decorations/mini games in the shop for the 3DS to pimp out the main UI.

At least um, profile avatar customization exists idk??

I think it's boring in the sense that you can't decorate it. I thought it was going to be like the ps4 in terms of decorating. It would be cool to have themes like in that one.

Completely agree. Themes bare minimum I assumed would be added like a year after release. That, no home screen customisation, and the little fun apps like Mii creator, voice recordings, and the camera all missing makes me sad and I hope they’ll add some back into the next console but I’m not optimistic

As much as I enjoy the Switch I agree. The menus and themes and music are just plain bad.

3DS themes were so awesome. Also as much hate as the Wii U got its menu and sounds were so much more memorable to me (even if it’s game library isn’t for the most part).

Yesss I 100% agree it feels so corporate now. I liked the themes and background music on the 3DS. Even the Wii and Wii U menus had more personality to them. The eShop is the worst thing ever since there’s no music and it’s laggy as hell.

I like the Switch, but it lacks any character like the Wii and Wii U did. Even the Gamecube menu had more personality. They tried too hard to go for that modern appeal to be professional and there's nothing wrong with a little wackiness. I loved that all of the different channels had its own music. Now the Eshop doesn't even have music.

Corporate sterilization is boring.

I'm fine with the games entertaining me, but a browser would have been nice.

This! I understand the many corporations ditching colour - particularly branding wise where everything is becoming very minimal. I always felt like Nintendos selling point compared other consoles was the fun aspect though so the switch really does feel like a downgrade aesthetic wise

I won

Wonder if it was because at the beginning Nintendo was a little concerned about the price point of the new consoles. With higher prices, you'd have to appeal to the parents more and make sure your product looks more professional?
I do feel like dark colors would do better than pastels though..

This thread is really interesting to me because I don't think I ever would have noticed this myself, but now that you point it out--it does seem like the Switch is missing that bit of personality and fun that prior Nintendo consoles had. The GameCube and the DS had a kind of homey charm to them, in particular. I agree with other posters that it's probably at least in part an attempt to compete with Xbox and PlayStation to be seen as a serious, adult console, but I miss the whimsy.

In terms of its game library? Not at all! In fact, in terms of the games available for it, it's probably my favorite console. But in terms of its UI/customization options... good lord, yeah, it's boring as all get out. 😭 I don't know what they were thinking with the only two background color options being white and gray. Even just a wider selection of background colors would've been a huge plus for me, moreso if there were options for things background patterns, and if there were any proper purchasable, game-related themes like the 3DS (or, cough cough, their competitor the PS4) had?? Nintendo would have absolutely gotten my money on probably at least a good handful of those. And the options for profile pictures are so limited it's painful.

I do hope the Switch successor has a lot more in the way of customization and charm—I'm not sure who they're really targeting with the dull corporate minimalism look.

I agree with Meri 100%! I admit when the switch came out, initially I was not interested in it, but now I prefer the switch over my other consoles :D. I just hope they improve the internet capabilities (connection wise) because I shouldn’t be d/cing in Violet or Among Us when my connection is good 😭

Not being able to have a wallpaper on our title screen is a bit disappointing too. They could’ve at the very least do something like they did with the profile icons. Let us redeem our points for backgrounds.

yeah, the system ui itself and all is hella lacking. though while it may be the worst offender, I don't recall the other nintendo consoles with home (or something at least close to) access being super interesting with their uis outside of maybe a small aesthetic gimmick or such

really, we were just super spoiled by the 3ds. which is to say, I hope the next system takes from it more in terms of ui design and customization, even as I'm not holding out hope for
