Why do people put numbers in their username?

A username isn't that important to everyone, especially if it's for a site they'll just be using casually or occasionally. Maybe it's not worth spending half an hour trying to trying to think of something clever and unique that isn't already taken. When all your ideas keep getting shot down, sometimes it's just not worth it. It's easy enough to just add some numbers.

I did it for a couple of usernames way back when I first started out on the internet, but I haven't had numbers in my username for years and tried to come up with creative solutions to get around my usual username being taken. Ultimately it doesn't matter whether or not a person has numbers in their username imo, if those numbers have significance to them then that's cool, or if they help tie the username together that's cool too. For email addresses I don't mind them as much, especially because it's harder to get the email address you might want, especially for a "professional" email address of sorts (i.e. john.smith@gmail.com is taken, have to do john.smith.1@gmail.com instead).

also how do you expect to be a Russian bot if you aren't using a bunch of random numbers, like John512951024

Oh god, my email is so childish. I created it when I was around 10 years old. I’m not saying what it is for privacy reasons, but it’s a video game character and it has about 20 characters in it. It’s long and a pain to tell someone. I need to get around to making a professional one, especially for jobs. I actually have another email, but I use that for when people ask for it at companies, and I don’t want to say my other email.

i assume it's mostly when you want a specific username but it's already been taken, and it's either just easier to use numbers in it or near impossible to find another non-numbered version of the same idea? like some words you could spell in alternative ways (on some sites i've used "cornecobbe" if corncob is taken, because i like the pseudo-old-timey look and its just sort of funny to me) but perhaps they don't like the only alternate spellings they could think of, or there just aren't any good alt spellings for the name they wanted.

but sometimes people just like a certain number a lot and want to add it to their name. i used to add a '96' to my username as a kid, not because i was born then but i just really liked the number 96. i relaly dont get it now XD

I had to do that for my email as I have a common first and last name. But usernames for other things I usually don’t like to use numbers. Here on TBT you can find most names available so it’s not necessary at all here! Elsewhere like Instagram, Twitter, etc you have to get more creative if you want no numbers!

If my username is taken, I add my favorite number to it. I don't want another username or add another word to it.

I prefer a username without numbers but often times just "Holla" is taken on most places so I go with Holla_99 or Holla99 if underscores aren't allowed. 99 is a fave number of mine at least, though when even that is taken I have to get extra creative. I just got lucky when I joined this forum back in 2013 that my username of choice wasn't taken yet.

I'll use numbers if:

(a) the person who originally used that username is now inactive.
(b) I'm not planning on actively engaging with the community and just want to use a name I can remember easily.

I used to use numbers because I liked having the same username on every site so just decided on one with numbers that wouldn't be used. Eventually I realized I can be more creative and stopped using numbers cause half the time my username would be available without numbers anyway.

i think people put numbers in their name to stand out, if my username of choice isnt available ill add 64 to the end of it, usually it works out

I try to avoid it but my name is my name and it has been my name for the longest time.
If I can't use it, I'd rather have numbers that mean something to me, than a user name I don't feel a connection to.

Now that this is mentioned, I'm not even sure. The "55" in my username is literally meaningless, this is just the username I came up with for xbox live when I was 7 and it stuck so I use it almost everywhere to indicate that every person with this username is me, and when saying my username out loud, the numbers at the end just seem to make it sound "complete", idk how to explain it but it just sounds better like that to me. I would change this username but not only am I too attached to it, but then I'd have to change it everywhere else and that recognition is ultimately gone

in the past I've put number in my username when the username I want to use is already taken (without numbers). if I have to add a number I usually do 9 since its my favorite number. but I don't ever use my birthdate or any other long strew of number in my username and generally just go with 9 or 99 if I have to.

The only time I have ever used numbers in my username was on Miiverse. I was “Feraligatr55” and since 5 is my favorite number, it just stuck. I’m not sure why I added two 5’s.

Sometimes people just do it because their chosen name is taken. Sometimes the numbers seem to have some form of significance to them. I try to not use numbers if I can avoid it!

im literally in the same scenario lol, i made my email when i was 12 and it has like 15 characters in it. i always have to spell it for people and it takes so long. i should prob create a professional email.

as for the numbers in usernames thing, it's prob either for symbolism or aesthetic reasons. like how the x's in my username are for aesthetic. (it's a remnant of 2011 cringe culture but I have no clue what I could change it to, plus at this point I've had it for 10 years so why mess with success?)

It's still a mystery to me why people put numbers on their switch username...
