I'm suffering a lot right now, just got back from the dentist as my jaw and throat had been hurting for the last 2 weeks (as in sharp pain, keeping me up at night, giving me migraine like headaches and setting off my gag reflex bad) and my parents thought it might be my wisdom teeth. Dentist did an X-Ray and it turns out both of my bottom wisdom teeth are impacted and are lodged into a nerve which is causing my constant pain. I've been referred to a specialist because of them being stuck in a nerve, apparently there is a high risk that once they are removed my jaw will be permanently numb :( Dentist wouldn't prescribe me anything stronger than ibuprofen because I'm "too young"?! I'm 20 in less than 2 weeks and haven't had more than 3-4 hours sleep a night in almost 3 weeks... I have wait a few weeks for the specialist to respond and another few after that to get the surgery (because of the anathestic, my anxiety means I will practically be put to sleep)

I am probably going to go crazy with the pain soon, the room won't stop spinning because my ears are getting affected, I can barely swallow anything with the pain in my throat, chewing hurts too much and talking hurts. And I'm a week into my training at my new job where I NEED to be able to talk and focus on my training :( Ibuprofen and Paracetamol are doing nothing for me :(
I hate this so much and this is only the bottom two, I dread to think that I have another two of these waiting to strike...

Anyone got any tips on what I can do to ease the pain? I was going to go to my doctors tomorrow morning and see if she can prescribe me anything...

That sounds harsh if they know you are in pain like that. I mean obviously they shouldn't give you morphine or stuff like that for a reason... Hope you doctor can or if you have any painkillers you can buy without prescriptions?

Sadly I don't really, I had one wisdom tooth growing out and it was a bit itchy at first but as long as you brush your teeth properly and take care of your teeth so they don't get bacteria and stuff in them. I don't know if I will get my other one upper right (only have the left one out now) and if it comes out as well I hope I won't get any trouble...

Not the expert at painkillers stuff but try hot or cold stuff whatever you prefer?

Wow that was pretty scummy for him to only give you ibuprofen - I was prescribed oxycontin and I was only 15. I never used the stuff though, so I guess my pain tolerance is fairly high.

If the pain is bad enough you could always take a sedative and focus on sleeping it away.

maybe you shouldn't work? like, i get that you have to, but it sounds like you will be in a lot of pain if you work. sooo if there's any way you can get a sick leave or something ?? ;w; good luck w the tooth stuff .. it spunds rly painful

Did your dentist perform or refer you to someone to perform a CT scan? If you have good imaging and a good oral surgeon, you should be able to have your tooth out without complications. Since you are going for a full body anesthesia, you aren't going to have the risk of a local anesthesia injection such as Novocaine puncturing the nerve if it's wrapped around the molar roots... which can result in permanent nerve damage. Though any experienced, practicing dentist wouldn't perform such a blunder, don't worry.

Also, you should routinely get your teeth cleaned twice a year. A good dentist will monitor the movement of your wisdom teeth during the cleanings starting during your mid-teens to make sure the tooth is out before it threatens impacting the buccal, lingual, or inferior alveolar nerve.

If you want to immediately numb the pain in your mouth, dab a bit of Orajel on the gums of the wisdom tooth. Don't do it too often though. You can also chew on some ice or sugar free gum if you have an "itching" sensation.

oh yikes, that sounds terrible. unfortunately i don't know anything about how to cure this, except maybe try to sleep the pain away while taking medicine?

sounds a lot like what I went through with my wisdom teeth. I couldn't even get out of bed, the pain was horrible - basically how you're describing it. Except when I saw the dentist they scheduled to remove them right away because they knew the pain I was in was just unbearable. Once I got them out, there was 0 pain. I was relieved, and could finally go about my life normally. So, I guess just keep looking forward to that.
It sucks you have to wait a few weeks, ugh.. Also, pain killers are highly highly addictive, which is probably why they aren't prescribing you them. :/ Good luck though.

You need to ask to prescription strength oral lidocaine. Won't help a lot but will help. Ibuprofen is going to do nothing and for doctor is a jerk for only giving you that. I suggest asking for the lidocaine and a pain reliever that's stronger than OTC drugs and not as strong as morphine. As a follow up after your surgery, I suggest investing in a good water pick. I needed a root canal and couldn't afford it, so I bought one of these and my problem was solved after a couple months of coddling it.

OMG I have been suffering with my wisdom teeth the past week! I too have tried paracetamol and ibuprofen and they dont work! Someone told me to try bonjela so I have and Im sure that made the pain worse when I put it on- I dunno

I hate the dentist which is why I had put it off but it got so much where my ears and throat was affected too and migraines- also dizziness and just feeling ill/hot etc. anyway they just said yeah its wisdom teeth, 2 one top one bottom on same side and they just prescribed me antibiotics for 3 days

Antibiotics does kinda work- its calmed the pain down and i dont feel as ill but when its like a couple of hours off till the next antibiotic is due it comes back. One side of my mouth was swollen like a balloon and its gone down slightly. I have one more day left lets home it ends it! I also have the feeling like when I had braces and they were scraping against my cheek on the inside- it feels like that :(

Im 20 so maybe you should ask for antibiotics or something or perhaps its just for infections and swelling :/

I'm sorry you're in this situation. I was lucky enough to have my wisdom teeth removed before they could even start to grow in. I had braces growing up and my orthodontist noticed that my wisdom teeth would grow in the same way yours are now (running into nerves and pressing into my other teeth, making his work totally pointless) so I had them taken out way before they ever got close to damaging anything in my jaw.

I think if I were in your situation I would have them removed. The idea of a numb jaw is scary, but numbness is better than constant pain in my mind. In the end, it's entirely up to you. But I think any medication you take is just going to dull the pain, as the surgery would anyway, and with the surgery at least the problem itself (the teeth) will go away.

In any case, I hope your pain starts to ease and you find some comfort soon.
