1,2, and 3 are all mint for me.
I will always love 1, because that's where it all started...and that's where I started with the series. (Pokemon Red and my dandelion yellow Gameboy Color will be burned into my brain for eternity)...but, I think Gold/Silver/Crystal are probably objectively the best games in the franchise. And Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald also had a really nice feel to them.
My vote goes to Gold/Silver/Crystal (and the remakes)...just because, if I had to choose one set of games to keep while losing the others, I'd probably go with those games.
Also, I think, you know...while Red and Blue might not have been the strongest games in the series...Gen 1 also includes the original season of the animated television show...the first movie...the base set of the Pokemon cards. There's a lot that goes with that initial Generation. So, it's always going to be hard to say Gen 1 wasn't awesome...because, it was. That's a lot of memories.
