Showing your work in math is to:
1) Help yourself fully understand and it easily find a mistake if one occurs.
2) Show your teacher you fully understand it and if you make a minor mistake, he or she may give you partial credit.

not to cheat...
1. That is not true. The purpose of it is to teach us how to look at something and how to solve problems. The answer is extremely important, but you need to learn how to get to it first.
2. I never said it helps you cheat.
You basically said the same thing I did but in a different way. >_<

No I didn't. You said showing your work helps you fix mistakes or get extra credit.

No....

Help yourself fully understand

And I said nothing about extra credit.

1. I am talking about looking at looking at two numbers and solving it without directions. Showing your work doesn't make you solve it.
2. I meant partial credit.

Wait untill you get into a harder math class...

Storm, are suggesting that showing your work tells you the answer?
Yes. And if not that, it is impossible to do it without work, so you still need to show it.

No.

2+5+6=13

Did I just show work? No, what I did do though is do the work in my head. I used the same technique as I would on paper but in my head. I was taught to think a certain way when adding 3 numbers. As a result I got the answer correct.

You showed enough work there. And I am talking about actual problems, not simple things like that.

1. I showed no work.
2. 7+-5+1+5-7+4+123-4-123=1

The bottom line is that I showed no work, yet I still got the correct answer. Simple or not the answer is correct. Why? Because I analayzed the problem and thought of a way to solve it. The way I was taught to solve it.

You two are basically saying the same thing...

IMO I really discourage cheating. Because if you cheat you cheat yourself and than you aren't getting the full learning expirence you shold be getting.

@ Minoanza, I think storm means problems like,

-2+(-3x70)(-8 squared)/8=1678

-3x70=-210
8 squared=64
64/8=8
210x8=1680
-2+1680=1678

210
x8
----
1680

I think.... :gyroidwhistle

Your definition of showing work is different than mine.
No, the difference between us is the outocme. You think showing your work gives you the answer. I disagree.
In some more advanced problems, it does.

Storm is DEFINITELY right. I am currently in Algebra 2 and if I don't write out everything the problem either won't make sense or I'll make a mistake.

That doesn't apply to everyone. If we are talking about the Minority here it would be endless.

I could honestly do that in my head if I wanted too. In fact I can use a caclulator and not show work.

The point is you don't need to show your work to get the answer nor does it give you the answer by showing your work.

That is my point. Proove me wrong.
