Mafia Critique Thread

What do you guys think about WHEN to roleclaim as mafia and WHO to claim as? I took a big risk doing it in the scummies mafia and almost got myself killed for it. I know it's hard to actually formulate the best thing to claim and when you claim it. I feel like I struggle with that a bit.
Depends on the game type honestly. If it's a PM game, it depends on how early you wish to infiltrate circles and sniff for roles. If you're counterclaiming then well hopefully you've made damn sure to come off as town as possible and not hold anything back. Also when it comes to what/who to claim as, I always investigate the theme (you remember Sunleth right? lol) and pick something that is likely to fit but also is unlikely to be in the game.

can someone critique me for f*** sakes.
You flip flop as either passive town who lurks a lot and asks seemingly genuine questions, but you're also incredibly aggressive and overly focused when you feel you've locked onto scum. You don't know when to stop tunneling sometimes and when to switch to another target, while maybe revisiting the tunneled.

Just curious: Does anyone have any tips for playing as town? I'm just incredibly floppish as town and i can only play decently as scum, i want to improve my town play :C
Don't play differently when you're power role, be headstrong and confident. Pick apart flaws, wording, etc to form logical cases and get people to trip up because that's how you get others. Facts, not emotions. PR play should mimic townie play.

Do note I mean facts, not emotion to everyone and not specifically you Ness.

Play with confidence. As town, you're supposed to contribute, so do so. Don't worry about getting killed because of you do, that must means you played well. Playing it safe isn't what people say "Wow good job ness!", playing like you have nothing to lose does. Say what's on your mind, even if you are a PR. If you put town in the right direction, PRs aren't as much needed.

Are PRs more valuable using their powers or their voice? Is there a point where the power of the role justifies not contributing so that they don't get killed?

It depends if they are outed. Even then it depends on which pr it is. For example a doctors power is always more important than its voice. And a cops voice is equal to their power.

I firmly believe that if you get lynched as a PR WITHOUT claiming what that PR is as a last ditch effort to save yourself, then you're playing against town. Yeah you'd have a giant target on your head that night, but by not claiming you essentially make town mislynch and it's your fault because you chose to not claim when the lynch could have been used on someone else. o.e

You have both as PR so use them lol. If nobody is noticing something you notice and it's a clear scumread it's your job as town no matter what you are to provide the read. If this is about detective/cop, use your discretion. If you only got a town result and you think you can survive being sniped out, take the gamble imo. Always out red results unless somebody claims miller before you out your results and you read it as very authentic. If you are about to be lynched, try and get it off yourself without claiming first with a sensible argument that is neither demure or over-aggressive. This doesn't work as well later in the day near nightfall so if worse comes to worse you might have to out as cop with a green result, or worse, a result on dead or roleblock. At this point you have to hope the next mafia that gets nightkilled or lynched is the roleblocker.

As town who has led many a bad lynch, that's not good advice. Just because you're confident and lead against somebody doesn't mean you're right. I mean I've proven that I can lead a lynch against anyone no matter how good of a player they're known to be and I'm still wrong because I was overconfident. Being the game's first lynch leader can lead you to great respect, but 1/3 of the time it's a bad reputation lol. Then again I have the same problem as Ness, I'm better at being mafia on forums than town. Being town in quick games like epicmafia is easier than being mafia in that style for me. So I think one of the difficulties with being town in forum mafia is that time leads to self-doubting, and expressing any sign of that leads to mafia manipulating you. Trust your first impressions until really good evidence and reads appear that seem out of a person's behavior. As somebody who has lead many lynches against town as mafia, I can say that I often rely on people not using meta. If a new player or a not so good older player makes a stupid decision or a scummy post it can be used against them really easily to get them lynched when in reality it's part of their personality.

When people say as a general statement to ignore meta, ignore their opinion here, at least on this forum where 80% of the players aren't self-aware of their meta on a personality analysis level. And try to latch onto how those experienced players become self-aware of their meta and edit it - find those little bits of their playstyle that they seem to be editing in recent games and you'll catch up to what it is about their personality they're trying to convince you has or hasn't changed despite the change being consistent in recent games. But this takes a lot of time and playing a lot of games so if you don't have time you can't be good with meta and should just rely on in-game stuff lol.

Also playing a lot of games with perception is good for becoming better town who can form better first impressions. I don't believe I'm at this stage yet personally, but I can see how experience forms a Rolodex of classic scum behavior. This Rolodex isn't the greatest tool until it's very full though, I think.

or i guess anyone who died. srsly i'm not gonna get salty, lay it all out bad/good (if anyone cares to do so)

The game hasn't officially ended. So no discussing the game with anyone

Not tryna be rude, but it would be a little disrespectful to continue the game with a different host when Justice said it was cancelled already
I'd say the game has ended

then we should wait for justice to officially end it out of respect.

wouldn't her comment saying it ended, make it official?

I mean she said she was in the hospital & the game is cancelled, sounds pretty official to me.
I really hope she's okay since we haven't heard back ._.

i meant more so that maybe when she does return she can give out role lists and such like that. but idk, i've never been in a game that it cancelled.

also, someone pls critique me.
i know i don't have many games to go off of, but i'd really like some tips / pointers in order to find a better base for how i should be playing instead of making bad habits early on. i know i can't expect to be good right off the bat, but i'd really like some solid pointers in order to start myself on the right track! thank you.

same @ the second part. really would love the critique before 2nd game starts.
i'd give some but yea noob as well so mine wouldn't be very helpful.

I'd have to seriously analyze you two to give a more tailored feedback, but a general one is that just because someone does something scummy doesn't mean they are scum. There's many motivations for doing somethingn scummy: out of game bias, not being a great player themselves, holding onto pride, ect.

Alexi, I have a little more experience with you given that I coached you that one game, and we shared much of the same opinions (besides the toads push, but I knew he was tracker that whole time lol). I'd say the main thing is trying to be a bit more proactive and ask questions. You seem to like to post your stance rather than try to understand others' mindsets, and understanding everyone's mindsets will reveal their motivations and their allignment shortly after.

Ok so I feel like I am reeeeeeaallllllly bad at this game... I try to talk and bring up valid points, but I feel like literally no one even talks back to me hahaha.

But no matter what I do everyone is always sus of me.

Like in Tarot, I feel like I was following everything somehow, but no matter what I said about anything, people just thought I was mafia.

Anyone who has watched, what can I do to improve?

I also want to say thanks to everyone for putting up with me this far around the cellar, and no matter what's happen I am having fun here lol

thank you @SarasaKat c:

@toadsworthy: I think you have to be more confident in what you post. or, at least make them sound convincing - if that makes sense? Idk, some people might think differently.

also if you're seen as sus at one point in the game, don't drag it out. until someone posts this huge "why I think toadsworthy is scum" read and basically gets entire town to turn on you... then defend yourself.
again - some people might think differently. just my opinions (and like I said before, am also a noob so I could be wrong here)

Tear me a new one thanks

Always think outside of the box. Like in Tarot Mafia where I suggested different scenarios in order to prove my innocence, you ought to be considering all the different angles. If you're just kind of repeating what others have said, then nobody is going to take you seriously as a player because it seems like you're riding on coattails.

Tom is just too good nobody wants to critique? lool. I got none, at least. (considering tarot has been the only game i've played in with you, and can't really discuss it) so yeah.
