I have a love/hate relationship with him tbh lol, he's a shady scammer and I don't trust him but as a character he's just so fun haha. One thing I love is if you go into his ship and leave without buying anything, he just goes "...Thanks." and you can literally feel the salt across the screen, it's hilarious

I imagine he's running a pretty profitable business- sailing around the world (I think it's obvious he doesn't JUST stop at your island- why would he only show up some days if this was the ONLY place he stopped?) buying and selling art is going to be a rather expensive business. If he wasn't making money, there's no way he could keep going. Also, he seems to be the only real source of art for villagers... and I've been sent art from my villagers. So they've clearly "bought" from him, and not all of it was authentic (I've had good luck and had multiple authentic pieces, though). He's obviously scamming others, either if I tend to "outsmart" him (sometimes I don't look up art pieces before buying, though, and sometimes I purposefully buy fake art- hello fake Valiant Statue I got yesterday ). I don't feel bad about it because it clearly isn't hurting his business and he's also TRYING to cheat me in the first place (I... don't know why I'd feel bad outsmarting someone trying to cheat me?) But I also don't hate him or have any ill-feelings towards him- frankly, I find his dialogue funny and charming. I love his whole "Well, I WANT to charge you a lot... but I had a tasty peach, so how about _____?" It just makes me chuckle.

If you've never played that game, he LITERALLY was a shady insurance guy who'd harass you into buying insurance. It covered bee stings and reimbursed you a bit if you bought fake art- there's a good chance he was working with Redd!

I don't think about it as "outsmarting him," so I don't feel bad, nor do I feel like he's "getting what he deserves." I sometimes buy fake art on purpose from him too so I don't think he is losing any money (from me, at least). I think he's a cute character, even if he is a little creepy lol

I just read a story last night that portrays Redd as a fantastic artist that can replicate real art that even Blathers can't tell the difference of. That's why he won't let you leave with the real thing on the same day you bought it, so either way he's scamming you for a profit. I really like this headcanon and stick to it.

Though, I also like to think he intentionally makes the fake art obvious as well to make things interesting. I buy the fakes too, as they make great decorative pieces. So yeah, he still has a viable business even just by selling fakes.

No, he probably sells a ton of forgeries that make up for the price of real paintings. We don't even know how much they'd cost in the "legit" art market in the AC world. I think he knows you're taking a chance and doesn't mind it when you get a real painting.

Personally, I also like fake paintings and will start getting more of them eventually because I want to use them as decoration.

No, because I recently started a new WW town and now I remember how there is no way to tell whether the paintings he sells are fakes. Needless to say, the first painting I bought was fake. Of course.

So no, I do not feel bad at all that we are able to work around Red's shadiness in this game ;D

Since I've completed my museum and now regularly buy fake (or real art) depending on the piece, regardless of whether it is genuine or not, I feel less bad. Early on I bought a few fake pieces mistakenly before I knew what to look for, so Redd has gotten some pretty good deals from me too!
