im torn between my hopes and wishes and the reality of the situation and then also a third option: Nintendo doesn't care
We could always dream, we could have a hope, but at the end of the day we need to face a reality.

hopes and wishes: it would make me so happy to have more buildings. i feel like i suck at making nice, small areas when decorating my island and so to have another building to place would kind of make that a bit easier. and if u think about it we technically had like 5 whole buildings we could have in our towns in new leaf (but we also only had up to 4 play characters we could create).
New Leaf was slightly different. We had "living area" with permanent buildings with place where occasional events took place. On the top of this we had a "main street" where all remaining building been located and this area could be expanded / upgraded, to limit designed by developers obviously. Someone may say, but in last (final) update we got camping site - yes, we did, but this wasn't related to Nintendo kindness, but they noticed it's a chance to got more money, just for Amiibo.
However, idea of living area in New Leaf was designed in a way giving opportunity to expand this, as it has been done.
ACNH gives us an island, island with same, strict size. There's no additional area to put something, there's nothing but sea / ocean around our island.
Please note, merchants like Leif just appears on strict area, similar to NL - but in NL we got this area for other characters. Please note, Label is currently like "homeless", just coming with luggage and just staying all day. K.K. got a chair with set of simple chairs for audience which is really step back comparing to Club LOL.
Some may say, a town hall could be changed into sky scrapper and put more inside, or just add a basement to museum, add a room for a hedgehog sister or whatever we may please, but it still will be a wishful thinking.

the reality: it would probably be a Bad Move to add another building in an update because players who have already perfectly planned and made their islands would suddenly need to redesign things and that's massively stressful. also we can have up to 18 characters on our islands and idk if having the maximum amount of characters leaves u with enough space to decorate nicely.
Yes... and no. If we remember first Animal Crossing for GameCube, lighthouse was accessible - but now, we got an item. Could it be accessible? Sure, it can - but it will not.
But... if Nintendo would care, there still some options - for example - adding an underground area, with same size as an island... but this will not happen.

Nintendo doesn't care: Nintendo will do what Nintendo wants (exhibit a: look at the poster fiasco) and so we just have to cross our fingers and hope they do what we want as well
Some developers making games with really long support, releasing updates for years. Examples: "No Man's Sky", "Terraria", "Stardew Valley", but Nintendo never does such a thing... unless it will comes as a paid DLC (Breath of the Wild).

i dont think the cafe will be a separate building simply because datamining has shown that it will be in the museum i believe. but i hope that other potential buildings that can be added are their own separate building. i still think it would be cool to have a strip mall of buildings but that is most likely just a me thing
I had a prediction about fall update and this was fulfilled in almost 100%. This time, what we waiting will be almost the same.
We will got two NPC's - located in same area (city hall), two events, some recipes and maybe... but maybe... something added to relations between player and villagers, like visiting what we may remember from NL.

Nintendo pretends giving us "free updates" - but what we got is just what should be included in full release. I do understand, they tried to keep game to be hyped, at least for one year and this works.
I have a feeling, the following update will be a final one (plus some fixes) and this will be over... or if we will got updates, will be paid DLC.

I'd love Brewster and the the Police Station to come back. Maybe building for Katrina, but I'm starting to think more and more that's not going to happen because Reese and Cyrus didn't get their Retail store back and neither did Luna or Kicks get own respective shops back. (Shampoodle doesn't really have any use either unless maybe she comes back and gives you special type makeup like a link/zelda makeup, etc.)

It would make me sad if Brewster is brought back and only visits once a week outside Resident's service :(

I would love to see new building. I have a lot of empty space on my island that’s just filled with trees and flowers cause I don’t know what else to put there.

But no, I don’t think we’ll get new building as such. I think we’ll probably just get upgrade / extensions to the ones we currently have.

Lol no. The developers had their chance to have a bunch of shops in the game at launch. Most people already have fully developed towns and would struggle to work in an area for new shops.

I'm on the maybe side and leaning towards no. I've seen some islands that have 8 player houses. I have 3 player houses and I think it's too many buildings.

I hope so! I've left two 5x4 plots in my downtown area open - one next to the museum (for the roost) and another at the end of my downtown area (for a new building introduced in new horizons). I could always turn the former into an extended / outdoor seating area for the roost and leave the latter as a construction-site looking area or build an alt house there. But I'd really like to have more things to do on my island so I'm hoping for new buildings!

I am leanning towards we wont, but i am wondering how many people would want more seperate buildings. I know some people said they dont want any because they are done planning their islands but i guess a few others might do.

I kinda want more buildings, to be honest. I also wish we can have the cafe be an outdoorsy one instead of a closed building.

yes. since new horizons is more online updates, there will definitely be another something. im sure of it.

Thinking of NPCs who haven't been added to the game yet/so far:

- Brewster
- Katrina
- Lyle and Lottie
- Kapp'n and family
- Copper & Booker
- Phineas
- Dr. Shrunk
- Katie and Kaitlin
- The Resettis in full body
- Other seasonals (Pave, Blanca?)
- All the mentors/characters that are unlikely to return (Tortimer, Chip, Nat, Joan, Harriet, Gracie, Wendell, the pelicans)

Some of these could be incorporated into existing buildings, or as new travelers to replace others. If Nintendo decides to continue a narrative of the island developing over (a very long period of) time, maybe we'll see Nook's Cranny expand to include Leif, Able Sisters for Label, etc. Redd will probably stay on his boat forever. Personally I would love to see Celeste get her own observatory, but given the nature of the DIYs she hands out I'm going to assume she will always be a traveler, unless you could unlock her building after getting all her DIYs.

Since Brewster has had his shop both in the museum and as its own building, he's a tossup (unless he goes the way of Starbucks on my university campus and runs a traveling coffee bike). Katrina has both traveled in a tent and set up shop in a building, so she's similar, although this time around I'll guess she has a tent. Shrunk... no idea. I could see him just travelling like he did in WW and teaching you emotions, but there are just too many open spaces for new emotions now that he's probably gonna have his own club again. But if that's the case, I just can't see him building it on the island. If he wants a club, maybe we should get airplane access to a dedicated island... or the mainland.

I could see the Resettis having a way to access their base of ops through some funny-looking rock or hole in the ground, or maybe even a pitfall, that shows up one day under certain conditions. Lyle and Lottie only make sense to me as either a building (unlikely) or an event similar to the wedding event.

I’d love the cafe, even if it was only in the basement of the museum.. however I simply don’t think Nintendo will be that nice to us.

We also don’t have Digby:
It would be cute if he switched with Isabelle every other day like Timmy and Tommy did in New Leaf.

Edit: now I’m curious as to what would happen if I tried inviting the missing NPCs to my campsite. I know they have special dialogue, like the other day I tried Mable, but that would be interesting, would it just say it can’t read the card?

I really understand a point made by many of you. As there are experienced players amongst us, in their influence and comparing to current version expectations are getting higher. I can understand it.
However, expecting an ultimate-free-update-with-everything it's impossible to get and if Nintendo would release such as this, will be no point to create any AC game in the future.
Looking at popularity of ACNH they may want to create another AC game in the future and try to sell.

I would like some more buildings there is space around my island that I look at and think some more buildings ( a coffee shop ) would look good here :)

God no. i cant handle anymore buildings on my island. It'd get too congested if they add more. Hell, I'm already moving the museum to the beach and not bothered to decorate around it because i find it too big and contributes to the congestion. just me?

I'd like to think its very likely we will get at least one new building (since a bunch of NPCs/stores from past games are missing in ACNH), but after seeing the updates from this year so far, I'm not so sure anymore. It feels like they are doing the bare minimum in each update, and if this disappointing trend continues, we might not get any new buildings at all, and new NPCs/features will just be added to existing buildings or will simply just become "visiting characters."

So only Nintendo knows for certain, But yes I think we will get more external buildings to our island.

Let's look at some points
  • Dev team have said they plan to support the game for 2-3 years with updates
  • We are 8 months from launch, so should'nt expect a deluge of new buildings yet.
  • We've technically already had 1 new external building added to the game, Redd's Treasure Trawler in the April update. It's just neither permanent nor placeable, and part of the daily rotations so I guess most people don't consider it a new "building", although how it is in the game code is the same as a new external building would be, code for interior, doors etc and it acts very much like a new shop such as ables
  • Their approach with NH has clearly been to avoid unnecessary buildings and streamline functionality, for example we don't really need Shampoodles when we can style our hair at a mirror. So missing some buildings does'nt mean we won't get more, just that the new buildings have to be a bit more fleshed out.
  • Previous AC games have always had a lot of external buildings for towns
  • The game allows you to edit the terrain and place items anywhere. So there is plenty of scope for more structures as you can move stuff around to make space
  • While some people have "filled" up their islands, past updates such as pumpkin farming in October have shown Nintendo are adding features that require us to use space on our island, so they are clearing intending to add content that takes space on our island, and expecting people to update and change over time if they don't have any.
  • The map (on your nookphone) clearly has space for as many as 5 additional buildings
  • There are parts of our island where buildings / structures can be added on in fixed places, so without a kit for us to put them where we want. The Pier, the outcrop of land we all have. Tortimer could have a boat on the pier for example or even a boathouse there, you could still fish off the pier
At a guess I'd say we'll get around 2 placeable buildings over the next 2 years, with 2 additional buildings structures added to our island.

I think people are worried because we've not had say The Roost or Leif's shop yet, but this team knows how to take their time with updates, they know they have a great game on their hands and holding off on the better updates for later on will only drive more fairweather sales and keep players coming back.

Went with an optimistic yes, but really not sure at this point. It's been 8 months now with no new buildings (no shop for Kicks, no cafe, no dream suite, no KK club, no spa/beauty salon...) At this point I'm using player houses as stand in commercial buildings.

While I enjoy decorating and terraforming, it feels like the island is a bit lifeless. I miss Main Street or a shopping district. And I wish our villagers could actually interact with usable furniture.

Some developers making games with really long support, releasing updates for years. Examples: "No Man's Sky", "Terraria", "Stardew Valley", but Nintendo never does such a thing... unless it will comes as a paid DLC (Breath of the Wild).

You can also add Splatton 2, Super Smash Bros, Fire Emblem and Arms to that list. Ok two of those have paid DLC, but an important one to focus on is Splatton 2 which is the same Dev Team as NH. That had a long line of free updates with paid DLC in addition to it. Which I imagine is the same strategy for New Horizons.

The devs have also confirmed they plan to support the game for a number of years so I'm not worried about NH updates drying up anytime soon
