Ever feel judged for who you have?

I mentioned on the "To Dear Raymond" thread but I am going to say here. I had Raymond for the longest time and I didn't get him because he's was popular I didn't care about that. I got him because he fits my style with the glasses and the business suit he wars. However I won't lie I have gotten so much shame for having him and I need to express this. I really don't get the whole thing with Raymond. As someone who has had him last year, he's just like any other smug villager. Out of all the villagers that got a lot of love but at the same time a lot of hate was Raymond. Everywhere I see on Animal Crossing Sites its always "Raymond this and Raymond that" and it was everywhere. Now for me personally I got Raymond not because of the hype or fame, but because I like his style with the glasses and his business suit that fits my style. Unlike anyone else I treat him as a "friend" and not like some type of "crazy item" like some certain people try to do with him.

Some people took the whole Raymond hype way too seriously. I seen him getting charged so many Nook Mile Tickets on sites like Nookazon and even worse is when I saw people trying to sell him on Ebay using real money (Which goes against Nintendo's Terms of Service) and yet people still do it, because they wanted him so badly. Even worse is when people had Raymond the people who hate him shame others, just because they have him. I mean who cares? Don't shame people just because they have a ugly or popular villager.

I am pretty disappointed in the AC community for allowing this type of toxicity to last this long. I am glad that the hype is dying down "finally" but still I really wish next time when a new villager is announced or released in future we should treat them as "friends" and not like some type of "crazy value" Seriously I had to unfriend everyone who kept harrasssing me because I had Raymond. I REFUESE to let him go and get mistreated by others. Sorry for ranting but this was one of things that really turned me away from villager trading after I saw that video.

Hm. I used to, but at this point, if I want to have all tier 1 popular villagers, then I'm going to, because there is a reason they're tier 1: they're aesthetically pleasing to a lot of players. I'm not going to pass up on villagers I like just because people will eyeroll, or think I think I'm special for having these villagers. I work hard for all of my villagers, be it meticulously island hopping to find them or even just to find the supplies as I scan them in, because I don't keep crafting materials on my person, and I currently have no rocks or trees because I'm trying to draw a pixel by pixel representation of my island, and in doing so have just been placing unending custom designs on every single tile, lol.

The only time I judged someone else was, funny enough, my friend. She picked literally every single villager I liked, including going so far as to bash everyone for enjoying Raymond, calling him ugly and f-ing boring as hell, only to island hop for him, invite him and decide to keep him ( before I could get him ), and then tell me how great he was after 4 days of having him, refusing to work out any deal giving him to me which was going to be the original agreement.

She copied me on Raymond, Marshal, Audie, Fuchsia, Dobie and Genji. I got rid of Fuchsia in exchange for Hazel because I was tired of going to her island and seeing pretty much literally everyone I had at home, and... guess who she ended up getting rid of and getting as well, lmfao.

I don't play with her anymore, and I don't tell her what villagers I have. She's finally purging out ones she doesn't actually like, which is almost everyone, proving she only got them because I had them. Really irritating. It's one thing if it's a coincidence, or if it's one or two you didn't realize you liked until visiting a friend, but do you need their entire roster??
Wow, I just wouldn't visit them, but thats intense. Haha, ah, Id be a bit confused, and annoyed

I don’t think I’ve felt judged personally, but I’m oblivious a lot. There have been comments made about villagers I like but unless someone specifically states “if you like/have this villager than you are the worst” than I don’t take it personally. We’re entitled to our opinions, but there is no reason to be mean to others because of a villager. Just don’t come to my Island if you don’t like them. They make me happy.

Mmhm, I get disheartened when I see those too. I love him, but not for popularity. I just wanted the off chance of getting him, and this very nice person gave me him. Hes fun to have, and I don't get why people think people see him as a trophy. Like you said, hes just the smug cat.

Anytime I see any of my in game villagers get shamed I get a bit upset, but never show it. Esspecially with my favorites, that I actually got on my own, and not from someone.

I know its easier said than done but don't let other people's opinions on villagers get you down. Especially not some strangers.

Everyone likes different villagers and dislike other ones.

If youre happy, forget about what anyone else thinks. It's your island and what you say goes.

It really is easier said then done.. i mean, after a long day, the last thing ypu wanna see is something like that. Which is why I dont post my line ups much

Esspecially with my two I found on islands. Those two always get me the most. People are entitled to their own opinions

Its like that one person said, you just gotta tune them out,

But sometimes its hard to over look

It's silly but this time by pure chance in my island at some point I had Dom, Audie, Cyd and Reneigh. Like the new ones were just piling up and as a residual effect of all the underrated/ overrrated/ x appreciation posts I was feeling guilty about it? But I was lucky to quickly realize it was silly. I'm inviting and checking out villagers that catch my attention and since in this game they pretty much say the same I can't help but judge a bit more on appareance and as I talk to them and see them around I decide if I want them as permanent residents or so. By doing so I'm surprising myself.

For example I don't like the Elephant model, I feel something is off and I kinda dislike that not all of them have tusks, but Cyd. Just. Cyd. I've fallen in love with this cool big bro punk guy. Same with Ankha. I never had her and when she visited my campsite I decided to give her a chance and I'm finding myself liking her more than I had expected.

In the end the villagers that you have say 0 things about you. Because no one but you know the reasons why you have them. Maybe you have Raymond because you find him cool looking, or maybe there's an emotional attachment to it, like your deceased cat having similar eyes. Everyone should enjoy the game how they want and not be pressured by others to do it X way. It's incredible that for such a chill game like AC there's this sentiment of "what would they say" going on.

The only time I ever had anyone comments on my villagers was my brother commenting on how I'm "basic" for having Marshall. You know what that made me do? Love Marshall even more!!

He really is a cute villager :)
Nothing basic about liking him.

I had him in new leaf way before I was in any AC community so had no idea about tier lists and stuff. Really enjoyed having him on my island!

I made fun of him before I started the game. Called him *Bishi squirrel* to annoy my friend. But I ended up getting him to represent my chatacter

Now hes a favorite, and hes never asked to leave my island. I could never let him go

Awww that's so cute!! In NL days he was everyone's bae and considered overrated. It made me kinda not want to have him but in the end, I found him too adorable to not have!

I don't play with people I don't know, and I rarely even play with people I do now. Also, I really don't think very deeply about who my villagers are. I have the ones I like, and I there isn't really any part of my brain that worries about what people might think of that.

I couldn't care less if others dislike my choice of residents, though I do appreciate if someone compliments the choices. All of my residents in my New Leaf towns and my New Horizons island are chosen based on whatever theme I've decided to base the town/island around, and the important thing is that I get enjoyment out of it. They're my copies of the games, I spend the most time interacting with these residents and I don't see why it should really matter to anyone else. I don't follow tier lists, but I have favorites from across all of the different tiers and that is also reflected in my villager choices.

Regardless, I only really play with friends or either visit the islands of shop owners here on TBT or have them drop things off on my island, so this isn't really an issue that ever really comes up.

I picked villagers based on who I thought was cute or interesting looking so I ended up with a lot of popular villagers (I guess I have mainstream taste! But that’s okay, haha).

Over the last year I’ve had some comments when visiting my island about how “basic” my villager choice is, which... irritates me a bit because I feel like there’s an inference made there that the player is “basic” and that the superior choice is to “think outside the box” etc. This used to really bother me so I just stopped letting people onto my island except for trades. I think it is human nature to do this - in all hobbies, some people get overly worked up about other people’s choices and think that they mean a person is inferior or less creative. To have fun I have to separate myself from that part of the community or I’ll go nuts.

At the end of the day this game is most restful for me as a place away from the real world and I find that other people’s opinions aren’t useful information for me when it comes to a fictitious island game with talking animals.

Yeah, the raymond hype was 3 words. Out. Of. Control. It was crazy. Twitter blew up with Raymond and stuff and him wearing a maid dress in stuff, just too much. And the worst part was, people were so focused on Raymond that they forgot about everyone else and act like only popular villagers matter and that if you have a 'ugly' villager you have bad taste. Like, first of all, we all have our own opinions and who are you to judge who we have on our islands? Just focus on who you have! I really hope IF and it's a big if Nintendo ever releases new villagers, that it doesn't gets crazy as what happened with Raymond

i haven’t necessarily felt ‘judged’ but i have felt a bit embarrassed at times since i tend to have popular villagers on my island. it’s not because they’re popular at all, i just genuinely like them but i suppose i feel a bit embarrassed for not having a more diverse bunch, so to speak. still, i’m an adamant believer that everyone should have whoever they want, regardless of popularity, species, personality, etc and i’m working on applying that to myself as well. :)

didn't know people actually judge others for what villagers they have. that seems so dumb to me, people should have what villagers they want on their island, no matter if said villagers are super popular or super hated.

No I never feel judged for my villagers, but I feel like that’s because my lineup is very non controversial?
I picked my favourite villager of each personality type and then added two nostalgic faves, my resulting lineup (organised by species cuz I get confused otherwise lol) is:
Ankha, Rosie, Olivia, Lolly
Scoot, Molly
Erik, Deirdre
Fang, Kyle

And it’s like... a very normal lineup? 😂 They’re not all top tier but most of them are like tier 1 - 3 and they’re like... Normally aesthetically pleasing?
I don’t know I just don’t feel judged because my lineup doesn’t stand out either way
It’s not all the popular non amiibo villagers + Marshall and whatever and it’s not all ‘acquired taste’ villagers either 😂
