Today is another day for the fact entries. Since it's the 5th entry out of every 10 entries, I should talk about some amazing facts. I also forgot to mention that yesterday was my 3-month anniversary (or my 1st quarterversary whatever you call it) since I joined TBT. I've tried to stay helpful as I enjoy my time here. TBT is way better than LBPC.

Today's entry is about some interesting facts about the world. I will explore each continent and describe some facts.

Overview:

  • Officially, there are four hemispheres to the Earth. I believe that there are six rather than four. The two you don't pay attention to are the front hemisphere and back hemisphere.
    • The front hemisphere is the mainstream hemisphere. All of the earth east of the 90°W meridian, but west of the 90°E meridian is considered the front hemisphere. Africa, Europe, and the Atlantic Ocean are dominant in the front hemisphere.
    • The back hemisphere is on the other side of the earth. All of the earth west of the 90°W meridian, but east of the 90°E meridian is considered the back hemisphere. East Asia, Australia, the western half of the United States, and the Pacific Ocean dominate the back hemisphere.
  • Before 2000 AD, there were only four oceans. The Southern Ocean was added later on.
  • Every continent that ends with an A in the English language has a desert. Likewise, all continents with a sandy desert touch the tropics.
  • All 7 continents, including Africa and Australia, have annual snow and ice somewhere.

North America:

  • North America is the only continent to pass the 80°N parallel.
  • The majority of North America's countries are part of Latin America. Ironically, 80% of all the land in North America either comes from Canada or the United States, the two countries of NA that aren't Latin American. However, Greenland isn't an official country, but it's part of the 80%.
  • The United States is the only country in the world to pass both the tropic line and polar line at once.
  • Hawaii is not part of North America, but it is part of the US.
  • North America is one of the two continents to not begin with a vowel.
  • Before the introduction to the Southern Ocean, the Indian Ocean was the only ocean North America didn't touch.
  • Out of the 50 states, Texas has the most counties. California is home to the largest county in America.
  • Phoenix is the only capital in America to have a population to exceed 1 million people, despite only being in the middle of a desert.
  • Santa Fe is the oldest capital in America.

South America:

  • South America is one of the two continents to not begin with a vowel. In addition, it's one of the three continents to pass the equator.
  • Uruguay is the only country in South America to not be part of the tropics at all.
  • The only two countries in South America that don't border Brazil are Ecuador and Chile.
  • Despite Brazil being the largest countey in Latin America, the largest civilization in Latin America prior to 1492 was in Peru.
  • South America is the only civilized continent in the southern hemisphere to pass the 50°S parallel. Even though Antarctica is the other continent beyond the point, it's not civilized.
  • The fastest flowing river, the driest desert, and the tallest dune are all in South America.

Africa:

  • Africa is the only continent to be in all four hemispheres.
  • Africa is also one of the three continents to not touch the 40° parallels in any way.
  • Lesotho is the only landlocked country in the world to be bordered by one country on all sides.
  • South Africa has the world's largest reserves for platinum, gold, and chromium.

Europe:

  • Europe is the only continent without a desert. It's also one of the two continent to not touch the tropics.
  • Despite being so significant, Europe is one of the two continents in the world to be smaller than Antarctica.
  • The largest empires in the world in history both come from Europe. The Roman Empire, and the British Empire.
  • Of all the extreme points in the world, Europe's southernmost point is the northernmost point of all southernmost points, making Europe the northernmost continent.
  • Europe is not separated from other continents by oceans or seas completely. Same with Asia.

Asia:

  • Asia is the largest continent in land, population, and population density.
  • Asia is one of the two continents to not touch the Atlantic Ocean.
  • The Indian Ocean is the only ocean named after one of the countries.
  • The extreme points in Asia (i.e. highest elevation, largest city etc.) are the most extreme in the world.
  • The oldest civilizations the world are in Asia.

Miscellaneous:

  • Because of the low population density and lack of countries, Australia is the only civilized continent in the world to have no 3rd world nations.
  • The Pacific Ocean may be the largest ocean, but the Atlantic has the most connected seas.
  • New Zealand, Samoa, and Guam are the only extra-continental countries in the world. Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Malyasia are all part of Asia. Sicily, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Iceland are all part of Europe. Madagascar is part of Africa, and the Caribbean Isles are part of North America.

If you have anymore to add, you can post a comment.
