Discord is this instant messaging company for gamers that's been around for a few years now. You can make servers, invite your friends, video chat, and so much more. It's free to use and you don't have to be a gamer to use it. It's for everyone! That being said, I feel like the creation/advances of instant messaging apps (Discord, Skype, etc) may one day make messaging board obsolete. Heck, maybe something else may come along and make instant messaging obsolete.

I want your guys opinion on the matter. What is your perspective of the advancements in this field of technology over the years? What might happen in the future? What's the superior way of communicating on the internet? Share your thoughts!

While I might fear messaging boards might fade away, I believe that social media, IMs, and forums could live together and advance along with each other without making one obsolete to another.

My opinion is that while forums will probably continue to experience some decline, they aren't going to die anytime soon. I may be a little biased since I do really like it here, but I feel there are some things about forums that you don't get with other forms of communication.

It may seem a little out there, but if brain-computer interfaces end up becoming a thing I think it would render pretty much all of these obsolete. I think the ability to connect your brain to a computer would have drastic impacts on our society, maybe not for the better. I think at best it would resemble the Protoss Khala, and at worst the Borg.

I love discord's fast communication, it's perfect for an impatient person like me.

Forums are dying and that isn't a bad thing, outlets like discord are much better in doing the jobs that forums aim to do.

I strongly detest Discord and instant ?brain-messaging? services, if that wasn?t already obvious. People would be able to read your thoughts and it would lead to a lot of death and disastrous consequences. Advancement isn?t always good, and remember kiddies,

?It is not so much important as the advance of technology and science, but rather WHO is in CONTROL of that technology and science. They must be people with love in their hearts, who consider the betterment for all, otherwise don?t bother.?

Of course, that's why I said it's maybe not for the better. I don't know what the future holds, but I'm starting to wonder if dystopia is simply the only path a civilization can take, other than obliteration.

Should I call a doctor? None of that seems true or likely to happen. Even if was possible to communicate through thoughts in the future, I doubt we can read each other thoughts. Just make it so we can send thoughts and only hear the thoughts that were sent to us. While some technology advancements are not the best, instant messaging isn't one of those.

Nevermind, you’re right. I’m sorry for the response. No, I don’t need a doctor. Thank you. And I agree.

I’ve been posting on forums for as long as I can remember so I’d be sad to see them disappear, although TBT is the only forum I still post on. My old online friends from 10+ years ago that used to be on other niche forum communities with me all moved to making private groups on Facebook so we can keep in touch. I’m shy and I’m not as vocal on discord and chat servers. It’s a bit too fast paced for me and I don’t like catching up on pages of messages. That’s probably why I don’t last long in WhatsApp or kakao group convos lol.

They are good for people with similar interests to meet I guess, but yeah especially IMs and social media are taking over way too much and trying to be too 'serious' in terms of communication and as "official" sites and platforms for companies. Not every has them and might not want or need them so just get a well-made homepage that you can navigate instead, smh.

If you're craving for open discussion on plentiful of topics with like-minded people, then the Internet Forums will fit the bill. More often than not, they bring up some of the most interesting information I'd read after typing something specific on a search bar. This is especially true for the more niche communities.

Although social media platforms and Instant Messaging apps strive to be accessible and instantaneous, the very same goal unfortunately often prevent them from having interesting topics on offer. That is, unless you found like-minded fellows, which is easier said than done.

Forums are less populated than they used to be and I'm sad about that. Sometimes facebook groups are pretty comparable, and that's fine, but I've always been too intimidated to join in an open discord chat. It's much harder to ask a question or start a specific conversation. Also the topics tends to get derailed a lot. I just don't get instant messaging as a substitute for message boards. I suppose the up side is that it's more fast paced, so you can actually sit for awhile and engage with people instead of the conversation building slowly, maybe over the course of days, waiting for people to log on and maybe post something.

This is kind of what I was trying to get at haha and then I saw your post! I think IMing and Discord are probably better for established friend groups for me; I too have thought about joining Discord but I always get nervous and don?t lol.

I was an avid forum user for at least four years before discovering Skype/Discord. I think forums are less anxiety-inducing, and definitely better for more formal and organized conversation (you actually get a chance to type well thought-out responses), and in my opinion it's a little easier to meet new people. I met a lot of my first internet friends on forums.

But if you're fortunate enough to have a friend group you communicate with frequently, Discord is the way to go. The first 4 or so months I had Discord I was silent because I was too scared to say anything in the big public chats, lmao. But once I fell into a group of friends, I found that instant messaging was amazing. Discord's voice chat comes in handy when you want to play games together too. I get impatient on forums because I have to refresh the page to see if there's new replies, plus it's a lot harder to upload photos.

So yeah, I think there are advantages to both, and both can and should coexist peacefully :)

I've been thinking recently about the effects of space colonization on our society. Since space is so massive, instant messaging simply wouldn't work between different planets. The signals take far too long to travel. Unless we find a faster method of communication, long distance communication will have to be done using email or prerecorded videos. Perhaps as the population of outer space increases, forums will become a more practical way to communicate across our solar system than something like Discord.

Of course Earth will probably remain the center of intergalactic affairs for at least the next few centuries, as its population will dwarf anywhere else. The slow death of forums will probably continue for quite a while.

I haven?t used discord. I have become very attached to online forums. I truly hope forums do not die.
