Well, actually, the N64 was released in Japan in June of 1996, but that's beside the point...

20 years ago today (actually 4 days ago), the Nintendo 64 was released in North America. From this day on, gaming would never be the same. Sure, there were already 3D arcade machines, but this was the first instance of a 3D home console. The N64 was amazing for its time, and set the bar really high for other gaming companies who would soon follow in its footsteps. I only wish I was alive to see that day... (It had already been out for almost three years when I was born.)

As is evident by my avatar, username, and subtitle, I am a huge fan of the N64. I could easily consider it my favorite Nintendo console. I can't really describe why, but it might be the step up from the SNES' 16-bit graphics, the bright, colorful designs and detailed/cartoon textures, and not to mention that it has like ZERO loading time! I also believe that the N64 produced some of the best games Nintendo has ever made, like Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, OOT, Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, Pokemon Snap, and a lot more. Sure, the games may have aged pretty badly, but you gotta give them some credit; they're still awesome!

My mom had an N64 when I was really young (pretty much still a baby), so it was essentially the first game console I have ever played, and probably the best one at that.

At the moment, I am playing SM64, still trying to get that coin star in Tall, Tall Mountain...

What are some of your favorite things about the N64?

*Dargblargit! September 26th... a few days late, but never too late to acknowledge it!! DON'T JUDGE ME! I still love the N64 just as much...

I guess my favorite thing about it was that the N64 was basically the birth of 3D gaming, or at least it made 3D gaming mainstream. I don't know if I would say N64 was Nintendo's best console, but I believe that there was more of a focus on game-play back then as opposed to graphics.

There's plenty of other Video game birthdays in 1996 too. Pokemon and Crash Bandicoot. Say happy 20th birthday to them too as well.

Yes but they occur on other days. I will respect their days when they are nigh. Until then, ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY N64!!!

I don't know why I like the N64 so much. It seems like everyone hates it because the graphics suck and the games weren't super-expansive. I think gamers nowadays are just spoiled or something. I'm not saying that in a bad way either.

No video game system is better than the Nintendo 64. Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Pokemon Stadium, Paper Mario, and Pokemon Snap are the best games on that system (according to the apples in my sidebar that is). Even those are my five favorite games.

One of my favorite part about the N64 besides the multi-colored systems and controllers is that they still work after 20 years of usage. Some Xboxes have died in three years after purchase.

The N64 was and is amazing. I still have mine in the loft but I wouldn't know where to look for my games :( although I can pretty much guarantee that if I were to take it down from the loft and switch it on that it would still work even after all this time. The first console I ever had was the ps1, ended up playing them both equally though for the variety of games. My ps1 is long broken I think, last I remember the load up screen would freeze :(

I remember getting hyped when my aunt got me mine for my 8th birthday

Happy birthday, N64! It's still one of my absolute favourite consoles, and some of my favourite games of all time were released on it. To this day, I still buy games for it when I go to cons. Like Apple2012 mentioned, I like the fact that it came in so many neat colours.

Happy birthday, N64!

It's definitely the Nintendo console that has aged the worst but there's still alot of great games on it. Ah, I can still remember the anticipation waiting for it to be released. That was 20 years ago? Wow, time really flies.

I wouldn't say it's aged as poorly as the Virtual Boy.

OMG Ocarina of Time always and forever! My favorite game of all time! It makes the N64 the best console to me! ^-^
