House of Nightmares [FINAL ANSWERS]

@JollyOli @sheilaa Both of your posts have mostly gone into a matter of opinion so I don’t see a reason to discuss it further, but as far as this particular challenge goes I also don’t really think Farley was the best choice for what was supposed to be an easier mirror, given his relative obscurity despite being an Animal Crossing character, and having him upside down really put it over the top - I have played the game and know who he is and I never even came close to seeing him in the mirror, so yes I know what you mean Sheila about not remembering every character you’ve ever seen before and about focusing on the wrong things in an image (I got thrown off by the colours and stopped even looking for a shape). However what I meant about having a basic knowledge of Nintendo is you’ll at least have some ideas of things to google if you can’t get it.
Anyway Justin simply misjudged the difficulty of this mirror, it’s not the first time it’s ever happened.

(in general not to Justin specifically 🤣)
Well, I agree, it was definitely not an "easy" choice, doing a 1-2 times appearing character depending on how you count and expect 13 year olds and up should get it. Sorry we got life and other events :p I've played games, though a lot weren't nintendo and while sure, I had a brief moment it could be upside down that was definitely not in thoughts. And all the blue and the hammer outline(aka staff) was incredibly trolling.

I did googling and tried drawing around it.. nope. Also I don't think they put "easy" as in a lot of people would actually get it, moreso based on staff members they try it on.

And yeah not gonna discuss it more in opinions but looking forward to fail more lmao.

I told all of my friends if you turn it upside down, it looks like a gnome like wizard with a long white beard and a blue hat and he’s holding a staff that might be on fire. You’ll just have to take my word for it that I’m not exaggerating at all.
I spent about 3 hours googling different combinations of ‘Nintendo Character Wizard White Beard Blue Hat Staff‘

This character never came up once.
So whilst technically the image felt easy to decipher (for me, not necessarily for everyone) - I still didn’t get the right answer despite having guessed exactly what it was and so I moved on to other possibilities.

That makes it a pretty poor puzzle - if the answer is exclusive to people who know the game.

Can we please get some puzzles that level the playing field for people who aren’t over 25 and had a Nintendo console from the dark ages? There are other, less frustrating and more engaging puzzles that would be more accessible for people of all backgrounds. So far it’s very weighted toward Nintendogs.

Edit: oh wait - I have proof!

Haha I was exactly like this with the wizard. Turned it upside down and been googling for hours! Multiple lists with 100's of Nintendo characters, searched in all collectible Super Smash trophies, searched even Google image "nintendo characters" with only colors selected and not kidding: because Justin said it was easy I had the thought just as with the first it had to be an AC character so I've googled "animal crossing characters" and even "animal crossing npc's" and even then this Farley never showed up on any website, lists and images. Even with almost 30 years of game-knowledge this was almost impossible if you never played the original AC enough to even meet this character. :)

Oh my, who in the world is Farley? I unfortunately didn’t play much of AC on GameCube. I genuinely thought it was some old man from The Legend of Zelda, but to each their own.

I don’t feel too bad though, I even checked a wiki that states 600+ AC characters and he didn’t appear, so I wouldn’t have found it even if I tried.

This was indeed one of the things I thought of haha 😂

Hmmm... I was way off in my guess 😅

The colors really made me think of the BotW guardians immediately. But instead, it was a rather obscure AC character.

Oh well. GG, everyone!

some of you have never had 10 different tabs of character lists from different nintendo franchises up at once and it shows

that's not serious before anyone gets upset but if mirrors were limited to only widely recognizable characters we'd just be getting 10 different marios and luigis every time, it's not supposed to be super easy that's kind of the point

I legit knew it was this character and spent about 5 hours googling "nintento wizard with blue hat pink flower walking stick" and all I got was multiple images of Toadsworth 🙃 I scrolled through all 2000+ images of SSBU spirits to no avail...my efforts were for nothing!!

The universe wants people to keep guessing Toad confirmed.

The TBT Fair 2020 has been constructed with the concept of something for everyone in mind: even if one event is not your speed there should be plenty of other activities that are. For example, a user might shy away from art challenges if they can't draw, but they can still participate in the Cosy Photo Challenge. Users who don't have ACNH won't be able to participate in two of our contests, but they can still take part in Little Lullabies and Magazine Mash-Up. If you like a bit of a challenge but find House of Nightmares doesn't suit you, then you might find Count Inside the Bottle, Discord Trivia and Half-Past Hoodwinked to be more up your alley.

I have removed the text message screenshot from your post due to containing your friend's face and phone number. I would like to take this moment to remind everyone that you should not be discussing the answer to the mirrors with anyone.

Meh - I’m just not the kind of person who thinks that because that’s ‘how it is’, that’s all it can ever be. I like the style of visual challenge, just think it could expand beyond one thing 🤷‍♂️ Just an opinion reflected upon the frustrations of many of us in the last challenge.

ps - thanks on the phone number front, I kinda missed that in the edit o.o

edit: oh and I’m sorry about the talking about it - it was with an irl friend who isn’t on the forum and it didn’t say on the main page explicitly talking about it was forbidden, just sharing answers.

I'm also one who hates "That's just how it is" for most things, but I personally don't see reason for drastic changes in how the event is. I just see this whole game as a visual trivia event. You don't see people complaining too much about trivia quiz shows because that's what they are -- trivia -- and the joy in it is knowing or not knowing stuff and learning cool things in the process. It's not meant to be easy, because if it were then we'd just be calling it the "common knowledge" game and personally that's a little less fun haha.

Of course, this is just my preference. You can't please everyone, and not every event was meant for everyone. It's okay to have something not be your cup of tea for whatever reason.

edit: comments and suggestion are cool ofc!! they aren't invalid. but i feel that drastically changing the level of difficulty will have the event lose its charm to many of the players. I guess in essence "it is what it is" because for many fairs it's this kind of charm (and challenge, and frustration) that the game gives.

Even though I didn't get this one, I'm glad we got an additional AC character. Personally, I'd rather see obscure Animal Crossing characters (such as Farley, even going towards characters like e+ exclusive villagers) instead of more prominent characters from other series. I get why the theme for these is Nintendo characters and why people like getting characters from other series, but AC is pretty much the only series I play, and I'm guessing that's also the case for a lot more people here.

For the harder mirrors such as Whispy Woods, I'm reluctant to spend a while trying to figure it out because I probably don't even know who the character is, and even after making a bunch of online searches, I don't know how likely it is that I'll find what I'm looking for. If I at least knew a challenging mirror was an AC character, whether it be Isabelle, Serena, or even Lulu the anteater, I'd definitely spend a lot more time figuring it out, and even for people who don't know the older characters, at least they'd only have to look up one series and the villagers/special characters within it (and there are complete lists of both categories on sites like Nookipedia) instead of however many Nintendo series there are. I'd be more motivated to look up characters from a series I care about than ones from something I've never played. I'm sure a lot of people feel differently, but I just wanted to add in my thoughts.

I wonder from what series the next character will be. We've had Animal Crossing and Kirby so far.

Fun Fact: Farley was incorrectly listed as the snowman NPC in Prima's Official Strategy Guide for Animal Crossing (GameCube), meaning that there's no actual entry or info about him in it. This was really confusing when I was a kid because I'd already seen/knew what snowmen looked like in-game. (At least until I met him in-game because we didn't have a PC or internet at home at the time.)

The game is called house of nightmares how could that suggest anything other than a challenge

can’t wait for the next one I’m 1 for 3 right now and mama needs more tickets!!!!!!

well people are monet, shakespeare and nintendo employees apparently lol :p

My first game was new leaf so I didn't play Ac gamecube but I was lucky seeing a video about him once so I guessed him correctly! ;3

i think both the 1st and 3rd nightmares were hard but not super unfair or impossible (no comment on the 2nd one though, i just. could not even see the outline in that one orz)

but for both those nightmares i had a pretty similar approach, so maybe this will help some of you get tickets?

i tried not to focus on the details too much but more the colours and silhouettes (since, for both of those nightmares, the original colours were still somewhat intact and the general shape was there):
unknown.png
i would also just rotate and flip my canvas around for a bunch of different options that might make sense.
for nightmare #3 i didn't actually know who farley was at all! didn't even know he existed, but "gnome-ish character with a big white beard, a staff, and a blue hat" was something i thought could be plausible, so i kept that thumbnail. i definitely couldn't recognize it off memory, so i guessed it was probably someone i don't know.

the hard part was definitely looking for a character whose render fit properly! i went through the smash bros. assist trophies and kirby character list (there's also lists for mario and other franchises, but i felt like they wouldn't fit as well)... and then tried looking at the list of special animal crossing characters eventually.

it took me about 2 hours to figure it out, but it helps that they tend to use official or common renders of the characters.

i'm pretty fond of puzzles, and definitely don't mind digging through 50 character lists to solve something, so i'm not sure if other people would be willing to sift through that much or not. 'w');;; to each their own

( i'm not sure if talking about strategies for the nightmares are allowed or not, so i can delete this if it's not okay 'w');; )

Okay... Maybe I'll try to elaborate on why I find Farley too obscure:

Simply put, It doesn't even look like anyone that would appear in Animal Crossing at all.

Really: If you played Animal Crossing since, say, City Folk, and someone randomly showed you this character, would you even think "Animal Crossing"? Absolutely not! It's not an 'animal', and usually the only human-like character visible in the game is yourself. I'd never associate a living mythical humanoid character with Kirby-like proportions to being in such game. The only thing that might give it away as part of the series is the primitive 3d-shading it has - But when you blur it out like in this challenge, that removes the distinction.

All of this means if you don't know anything about the character, you'd have to go though extreme amounts of trial and error as your only strategy to figure out what it is.

I mean, yes - It's okay for obscure characters to be in here. But at least make sure that the character """looks""" like it comes from and blends in with a specific franchise - as opposed to a complete and utter outliar from relics past.
