How do you come up with names for your pets?

Cora is another name for Persephone. I wanted a mythological name for my cat and the underworld theme fit marvelously given her color and patterns.

I always name my pets human names, I had a budgie named Louie, Betta named Leo, and I have 2 snails named Craig and Augustus. I love human names for animals and I love referring them as that to friends. so for your cat I feel like some cute unusual girl name would be nice. maybe Gracia? idk

hmm well I've always just looked at my pet (had rats and hamsters and fish growing up) and whatever name felt right with that pet is what I went with. Sometimes I would look up pet names ideas for whatever animal they were.

As for my dogs, two already came with a name because they were adopted. I was ok with the names and they were names they already knew so we kept them.
My other dog we got as a pup and we named him Hans which means God is gracious. He was the runt and bottle fed, and almost didn't make it. He is 8 now :)

I rarely look up names for any of my pets. Usually I name them after a character from a video game, tv show, movie, etc.

usually out there names like... Jormangund, or random human names like Julio or something, because generic human names on animals is funny

i had two guinea pigs when i was little and named them snowy and nibbler - one was white, the other ate a lot the first day we got her! and then years later when we got cats, our family had huge discussions over what we wanted to call them. i had tons of ideas for both boys and girls, and they just tended to be names that i thought were cute. we ended with iris (a black and white cat, my sisters' choice) and olive (she's half white half tabby, my choice of name - i wanted ophelia but i got vetod)

As a kid I usually went with names other people suggested, such as Lovey or Tucker. Now I usually either look up names by meaning or make a reference. My bearded dragon is named Gonzales since he was quite speedy as a baby. I chose Mayu as my cat’s name because it can mean “gentle and genuine” in Japanese.

Really the first things that come to mind for a name is what i go with.
Current pets:
Albino Pacman frog - Bubba
Marbled Salamander - Slime Dragon
Camel Spider - Horror
Corn snake - Spagetti
I have a fishtank with lots of fish. But I have a favorite so they get a name. Stone Catfish - Bitty / Bit

I usually name my pets after characters in media or after a character in mythology! I previously had a cockatiel and named it Eclair since she had a cluster of bright yellow feathers on her head and I heard that Eclair meant "flash of lightning" after watching Kiddy Grade lol. My current pets are named Aladdin and Luna. Aladdin is named that because I previously named him Allie after a friend until I realized he was a boy lol. Aladdin was close enough I guess. Luna because she's all black and I'm a Sailor Moon fan so......

Our first dog was named Tansi, due to her tan-like colour. I'm not sure how my parents came up with her name as I was too young to name her. I think its a cute name for a tan-coloured pet though, and it could be unisex :)

Our second dog was named Chappie - he came with this name. Not sure how the owners came up with that. I think it came from the saying "happy chappy" (it's a NZ thing lol) since he was a very happy dog.

My parents current dogs are named Roxie and Hollie. I originally wanted to call Roxie by the name Maya, since I had heard the name from the Disney movie Eight Below that I liked as a kid. But my parents didn't like the name lol. I think I got the name Roxie from the Bratz doll that I really liked at the time lol. I'm not sure how we got the name Hollie 🤔

Basically our dogs names have came from pop culture that I've liked in the past haha

my current pets both have shrek themed names because for some reason we named my cat after princess fiona and just decided to continue the theme KEKL

Cute names! =w=

mine are all videogame/anime stuff lol

Celty is named after Celty Sturluson from an anime series called Durarara!! because the character is known as the "black rider" and wears a cat helmet, and Celty is a black cat

Kiki is named after Kiki's delivery service due to being a very cute kitty lol

Zelda is my seal point cat and was both named after Zelda from LOZ and because I really like the name lol

and my dog, Hircine, was named after the deadric prince, Hircine, from the Elder Scrolls series because he is my favorite character

I like to give mine names that sort of mean somthing about them or their behaviour, my rabbit was kyra, it meant little dark one in myth an she was a dark coloured bun with a dark temper lol, had a hamster called obon as well (pronounced ve-ell) it was mongolian for winter as he was a winter white breed an his first recorded case was in Mongolia, my hamster I have now is called orso which means bear as his breed is a bear breed so he was given that

@Dunquixote Any new name ideas for the sweet babies? 🥰🐱

I haven’t had much of a chance to think on it. My mom decided to name the calico Jewels which I don’t like 😅 for some reason. I’m leaning towards Furrtaba and one of the silly names I came up with ( a VA vouched for it and honestly it think it is kinda cute for a nickname at the very least).

Aww, Furrtaba is very cute, and I think Jewels is cute too! 🥰🐱

Always love a good Dragon Age reference!
The names you picked are so cute, I love Taiga!

When I get a new pet, I just watch them for the first few hours or the whole first day until I get a handle of what their personality is like, then names start coming to mind. I got an oddly chaotic vibe from my orange tabby despite him not doing too much when he first arrived...just a vibe. So I named him Malcolm, because the show Malcolm In The Middle was the epitome of pure chaos, and turns out, he's a menace and it fit perfectly :D

My B&W Shorthair gave me a mysterious vibe, and I got the feeling that underneath her sweet shy nature, she was also a menace of a more subtle variety, so I wanted to name her Raven. But it was agreed that my mom would name the other cat, so she chose Bella instead, because she thought it was a cute name for a cute cat.

Turns out she was also a menace. I knew it.

Tomorrow morning our kittens are arriving. Right now I’m brainstorming names for my cat (my mom is going to name the calico) and I was wondering how everyone else comes up with a name for their pets, like if you go on a baby name website or book, or name them after something you like?

The names I’ve though of so far are:

-Taiga since the kitten is a runt but according to the adoption agency worker, she is very assertive and makes sure she is first to food bowl.

-Furrdinand von Aegir - yes the character is a male but thought it still would be cute and unique.

-Furrtaba (instead of Futaba)

If my kitten was an orange male tabby, I’d have named him Ser Pouncealot like from Dragon Age.

If my kitten was a black cat, I’d have named her/him Morgana, Jiji, or maybe Kiki.

I’ll edit this post tomorrow when I have a better picture of my kitten and post her picture. :)

Feel free to make suggestions if you want :)
personally i think of a character and thats it! however a lot of people go into baby names sites and search for names with meanings etc but i think that naming them like characters is cool

I wait for a name to naturally come to mind rather than trying to force one. It does mean my pets sometimes go nameless for a week or two, but it always works out with them getting one that fits them well.
