if you have the money and the will, go ahead. i do agree with you tho, about wishing it being less common. i think people should try to love themselves (don't get me wrong, I know it's a hard thing to do.) before taking any measures like that.

It's very unusual to get cosmetic surgery on the NHS. You'd usually have to pay, unless it's extreme - you'd have to have a good reason, for example back pain because your breasts are so large, or you're so unhappy with your appearance that it's causing depression etc. And even then it would probably be hard to get it.

And yes I'm fine with it. I might even consider getting it done (I hate my chin)

Sure, I think what worries me more is how many dodgy doctors and surgeries there are and people choosing those over legit cosmetic surgeons.

I’m personally against it. I happen to work in the medical field and I’ve just seen so many horrible life changing outcomes from surgeries in general. I think performing them in order to make money off of someone’s insecurities knowing you’re putting them at risk is immoral. I find it especially disturbing when the procedures are for the purpose of erasing ethnic features.

I think plastic surgery is a great thing to give people born with deformities or people who have been disfigured from accidents a chance at a more normal life where people aren't constantly staring at them or always asking them 'what happened?'(by their choice of course! I think everyone is beautiful no matter what).

I'm a little more back and forth when it comes to plastic surgery for cosmetic reasons. I wish everyone could feel beautiful and confident with their own faces and bodies, without having to surgically alter them. It can become addicting and things can go wrong, and after a certain point I worry that it can be too unhealthy on your body if you have too much plastic surgery done. But it's also their personal choice. If they have the money and are wanting to do it, it's really a decision between them and their doctors and not really for us to criticize

What someone else does has no impact on me or my life. If it makes the person's life better then good for them. Ultimately, it's not my business.
Some people do take it too far and to an unhealthy extent. However, I'd venture to say that percentage of people that do are much smaller than the percentage that do it in moderation/careful decision making.

4. For those of you who have never had a cosmetic procedure done, would you ever consider it? I would be open to certain things, sure. However, I more than likely won't because of just personal preference to avoid surgeries until really needed (I don't handle anesthesia great). However, I fully recognize that certain things don't have to absolutely medically needed to still have positive outcomes.
An example would be breast reductions. I like my breast the size they are but I also know the potential for them to get bigger/stay bigger post pregnancies (they could very well shrink or go back the same too). So, if that were to happen, I would certainly be open to reducing them back to a size I'm comfortable with.

This is pretty much my answer word for word. I don't think I would ever get plastic surgery outside of a huge disfiguring accident, but to each their own. It's their body and if it makes them feel more comfortable then they should feel free to do what they want.

I'm one of the weirdos who's actually considering it. My eyes are horridly uneven. My left eye has a double eyelid, and my right eye is a monolid, so I would really consider plastic surgery to get the two at least somewhat looking like each other.

it's just tough for me because i can't get into cosmetics as much without having to tape up one of my eyelids which is pretty uncomfortable. it's also just kind of a weird thing but it also feels like i need to expend more energy to keep the monolid eye open? if that makes any sense, lol.

Would I get it done? No. It's really not my business what other people do. I believe there is a point where plastic surgery can go too far, but again it's not my body so it's nothing I need to be concerned with. Just be nice to everyone, regardless of what their body looks like.

yeah. i find it a little sad that people look at themselves and don't like what they see.. and that there's all this societal pressure to look a certain way (have big eyes, a tiny nose, long legs, a thin figure, etc.) that people feel like they have to get surgery done. but if it makes you feel better & more confident, and you can walk through the world head high like hey, who am i to tell you that you don't get to look beautiful how you want to look beautiful & be happy the way you chose to be happy?

I had braces. They moved my teeth into nicer places, but changed how I move my jaw when I talk/eat. I got my braces because my teeth did not align in the center of my mouth.

Traditional cosmetic surgery/procedure-wise, I have debated on getting fillers on the bridge of my nose. I have not had a single pair of glasses sit properly on my face because the bridge of my nose basically doesn't exist (try putting your finger parallel across your nose bridge. can your finger touch your eyeballs? can your finger touch all of the skin next to and around your nose and eyes? are your eyes set higher than the bridge of your nose? that's me.)

I might just save up and get laser eye surgery so I don't need a nose bridge for my glasses!

i do. while i agree that sometimes plastic surgery results don’t always look great, i believe everyone should do whatever makes them happy as long as they aren’t harming anyone else and as long as the decision is being made by them and for themselves rather than being pressured or forced into it by someone else.

to be fair, i don’t know much about that but again, as long as it’s a decision made by the participant and they’re doing it for themselves and it’s something they want, i’m fine with it.

i’ve definitely thought about having a nose job done and even a v-line jaw surgery. my nose + jawline (or well,, lack of one) are two of my biggest insecurities and i just genuinely don’t see being able to love or accept myself with them. i’ve never been in a financial situation where i’d be able to have either of these procedures done and therefore i’ve never done much research but if it ever was possible for me, i’d definitely be doing research on them before going forward with anything.

Yes I agree for the most part. Getting plastic surgery greatly increases the confidence of a person who may have been struggling to accept themselves without it. In the end, it's someone's personal choice to get it and everyone has their own reasons. My mother's defining feature was her nose, and I always associated her face by her nose and I loved it because it looked like mine. As she got older she didn't like how pointy and skinny it was and she obsessed over this. Even though I loved it, she wasn't happy with it. I was really against her getting it at first, but after seeing how happy she is with her new nose, I'm also happy for her. She also takes pride in showing her friends her before and after pictures because she loves the difference so much. I only take issue with societal pressure that would pressure someone into thinking they have to get plastic surgery, especially very young people who are still growing into their face/body. (see 2)

As a Korean who lived in Korea for most of my life, I grew up with plastic surgery ads bombarding us everywhere. I was taught to believe that it was completely normal and even a defining moment in someone's life to get it - for example, my friends were given plastic surgery as a present after graduating high school. This was because their parents believed it would help them get better jobs or have better chances for marriage because the beauty standard in Korea can be “defined” by almost anyone. Only later I realised that it was the society's standards that were flawed. But if you grow up in that society, sometimes it's hard to tell the difference, especially if the "ideal face" ad is staring at you every single day when you're taking the subway and even your own parents talk to you about it like its normal. While I agree that you should do what makes you happy, it's sad knowing that someone may be influenced because of societal pressure, and in some cases, the only means to fit into your school or line of work. I think this issue really needs to be addressed in my country. Also, because of the popularity of plastic surgery, there are way too many clinics out there and a lot of them may not offer the best service or do the best job.

I haven't by the technical definition of plastic surgery, but I have had braces that significantly altered and improved my jaw/side profile after it was done. If I had not done it, I definitely wouldn't be confident about my appearance.

I've considered getting my eyes done when I was younger due to societal pressure (see 2) but now I don't feel that way and I wouldn't get anything done. I really love my mono lids and I’m more upset at the fact that my skin aging is making double eyelids form when I don’t want them lol.

1. I wouldn't agree to get it for myself, but if someone wants to change themselves in order to be more confident, let them. As long as it isn't an unhealthy addiction and the plastic surgeon is ethical rather than would just accept dangerous job for the money. I believe people have the right to pursue their happiness in any way that doesn't harm themselves or others.

2. It doesn't bother me what others choose to do with their bodies and money, anywhere in the world. Who am I to judge and tell someone to stay unhappy with themselves? If it boosts their confidence, I reckon it's not a bad thing. I care more about the content of someone's character vs anyone's appearance. As long as people stay safe and do their research, it is ok with me.

3. I haven't had anything done nor will I ever, I don't think. I am not willing to go through surgery and pay to change my appearance. Too much effort and too much money. The only thing I'd ever do is get braces and whiten my teeth but that isn't plastic surgery..

4. If suddenly I had the money and technology advanced to make the surgery absolutely pain free and safe with 0 risk, can guarantee what the result will look like and will look 100% natural, I might. But that wouldn't happen in my lifetime.

1. Yes, absolutely. People should do whatever they feel will make them happier, including altering their physical appearance. We are not here to please anybody but ourselves. Our appearance is for us. If we want to change something, and we have the financial capacity to do so, it's nobody else's business.

2. I'm concerned that some people use plastic surgery as a way to bring themselves closer to whiteness/eurocentric standards. They have the right to do so, and I support their right to self determination. I just see a trend that disturbs me in that people are trying to fix their nose and eye shapes to be more in line with Eurocentric beauty standards. Societal messages should express that beauty is NOT exclusive to European norms, however they do not. This makes me profoundly sad.

4. If I had more disposable income, perhaps I would. Dental implants, breast reduction, and work to fix a "lazy eye" that is actually caused from a birth defect leading to me requiring a corneal transplant. My right eye just doesn't open as wide as my left eye and it's something people have noticed (and commented on).
