Is there a fruit tree limit?

I've been working on an orchard with foreign fruit and I can't seem to grow more than 12 of each tree. Many saplings haven't grown for a while and some are stuck at a different stage. Is there an acre limit like past games? Each 12 trees is within their own tile on the map for me.
