Nintendo Discontinues Production of the Entire 3DS Family of Consoles

We all knew it would happen one day, but it's official now. All of the various models of 2DS and 3DS are no longer in production. Any thoughts about this? I know there are a number of people in the community who have not yet moved to the Switch or have no interest in doing so, and I imagine there are others like me who still play both consoles, so I figured this might be of interest.

I can't say it's surprising, it was an inevitability. I wouldn't be shocked if COVID-19's effect on business might have quickened the phase out that had already been going on over the past few years.

That said, I really hope that this doesn't also speed up the eventual death of the eShop and online functionality. It's stated in the article that there are no plans to end them, but that's just business speak. Earlier this year, the eShops for the 3DS and Wii U were removed in 42 countries in Latin America and the Carribean, and while the eShops there were apparently more barebones than what's available in other regions, it's easy to worry in light of today's news.

Regardless of what the future holds, I'm planning to get a backup just in case.

Knew it was coming but can't say I'm glad. A real annoyance, I assume they'll discontinue online play very soon (even though they say they have no plans to, you never know).

As for when Nintendo Network will shut down... It’s a mystery, but if I were to guess, it’ll be another year or two before that happens.

It's really unfortunate, but not surprising. I do hope they keep the online going for awhile. If not, I'm sure the Homebrew community will step in with another type of Wiimmfi to play online. I have fond memories playing games like Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Tomodachi Life, Pokemon Y, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and others. I think the graphics aged pretty poorly though and that's saying something since I love lots of older graphic games. I think the best part about the 3DS was the Streetpass. That was really cool and unique and brought joy in daily life or at places like conventions. I definitely don't blame them for this decision for sure. I think they should put most of their focus on the Switch since it's both a portable and home console that's been a massive success.

This makes me kinda sad. 3DS is one of my favourite consoles so it's sad to see it discontinued, even though it was expected! Kinda want to buy a limited edition one now if I can find them in my local game shop. I've been using my trusty ol refurbished 3DS I bought off amazon since 2013.

RIP 3ds. I mean considering second hand ones are almost always more expensive at least here, or they are like 10 bucks cheaper which is.. alright I can as well buy a new. I really hope they don't kill off the eShops since unless you get like, gameboys or retro consoles unless u pay NSO for NES/SNES games that's one of a few good ways for them.

Honestly kind of antsy about this. I have a 2DS, but was hoping to eventually get a 3DS XL since the tiny 3 inch screen is kind of dreadful. You think prices will skyrocket, and they'll become collectors items?

doubt it since so many units were made. they might still be a bit pricey but they won't go over the original retail value by a long shot (unless it's like a limited edition or smth).

yeah most used here are LE's or the tiny new 3ds which is.. too tiny or they only have expensive japanese consoles so yeah bit sad. it was a great console.

I'm super sad about it... I don't have a switch and I won't buy one until they add 3ds games to the console, (seriously it's a great idea), but anyway I will probably buy an extra cause I have a regular 3ds that I got when it first came out. I'm also really hoping they don't cancel online play because there are way too many dream towns I haven't visited yet!

oh this is sad ): the 3ds was the first console I bought by myself and I loved it soooo much! So many games and I miss all the customization aspects of the 3ds (cmon switch!!) I had one of the OG 3ds XLs and I ended up buying a new galaxy one a couple years ago to replace it since I wasn’t sure if I could get my hands on a new one later o: hopefully online won’t go down for a while >_< goodbye 3ds, you’ll be missed!!

Seriously, I totally agree.I had an original 3ds and then a 2ds and then another 3ds and I always loved them. I was looking on nintendo and the refurbished 2ds and 2ds xl are only 50$ and 100$ so I might get a 2ds xl before the prices raise so much.

Also don't you think that they should add a spot to put 3ds cartridges in a switch? I think it's a great idea. And if they don't do that they should at least let you buy 3ds games in the e-shop on the switch. What do you think?

I would cry if there was a virtual console for 3ds on the switch but I’m not sure how it would work without the dual screens if they were somehow able to emulate it maybe sideways?? Or put the screens side by side? Not sure

the world ends with you was a great DS game and when it was remade for the switch it wasn’t the same since you couldn’t use 2 screens >_< I’m not too hopeful for 3ds games being ported over without a major haul but it would make me super happy if it happened somehow

I recommend the DS version of the world ends with you! It looks pretty good still on the 3ds! With now NH is currently, I wouldn’t mind a NL remaster o: so many hours put into that game

I’m hoping that Nintendo will do something similar like the Mario all stars but for Zelda’s anniversary o: maybe ocarina of time, majora’s mask, link between worlds as one bundle? Plus a wind waker & twilight princess port (I just want to play wind waker again)
