Apple Supremacist
You know how Disney refuses to put Song of the South on Disney+ while putting content warnings on movies like Dumbo and Peter Pan? That’s because they (or at least some parts) were very racist by today’s standards (and by the standards of the 90’s). Nowadays, there’s plenty of media that came out in the 90’s and 2000’s (and even 2010’s) that are offensive by today’s standards, and it’s not limited to race. Examples:
- In the 1990’s and 2000’s, gender stereotypes (like boyish boys and girly girls) were common and people hardly have an issue. While they still exist today, shows that feature this content (like The Fairly OddParents) wouldn’t sit well with today’s audiences due to trans issues. Even if the viewer isn’t trans, nonbinary, or a gender nonconformist, he/she would be insulted by 90’s gender stereotypes.
- In the 1990’s and 2000’s, jokes about crossdressing, changing genders, and stuff like that were respected. Nowadays, they would be deemed transphobic, and if any new media has something like this, they would be seen as a hate propaganda piece rather than comedy.
- In the 1990’s and 2000’s, it’s possible to tell the difference between good billionaires and bad billionaires. Nowadays, thanks to inflation and growing income equality, it’s hard to see anything good about being a billionaire.
- Heck, many things featured in media from the 1990’s and 2000’s wouldn’t sit well with today’s society because of everything that happened since the time of their premiere. A SpongeBob episode was banned for having content that is too disturbing for kids. A handful of Simpsons episodes (like the ones that played Homer strangling Bart as comedy and the ones showing how extreme some of the bullies gotten) would be hard to make today due to how serious these subjects are. Anything that mocks on global warming or downplays it has not aged well.
