This is pretty cringeworthy to admit, but back in 2011 and especially in 2012, when I was just eleven-twelve years old, I was pretty obsessed with shipping in Pokemon. Once people started seriously talking about it (which wasn't until my sophomore or junior year of high school, so around 2015-2016), I started to seriously dislike it.
I will admit I'm a huge shipper, but only for fictional characters. I don't get in people's faces and tell them their ships are wrong either. I just kinda keep quiet and write fanfiction that no one but me will ever see.
Wait... we're talking about the OTHER shipping in that case I really don't care unless you bring it up every two seconds and/or write fanfiction. I hate fanfiction and think it should be burned with an extremely hot and vengeful fire.
I do ship people/characters sometimes, maybe not always romantically but a lot of the time it just happens. I see two people who I think have a great relationship with each other and my mind just trails into the whole "what if they DATED???" kinda thing, then I become in love with the idea of them being in love and it fills my empty heart with joy.
im fine with it as long as it isn’t anything problematic (abusive, incest, etc.) and you aren’t shipping real people. it does annoy me when people ship two characters who have no chemistry at all or have literally spoken once, though...
I don't really ship a bunch, I mean besides what the show obviously hints at, I always root for the "will they or wont they" couples because it's made blatant in the show that it's cannon. A lot of "shippers" are super problematic like every straight girl in the world shipping the two guys together, two very straight guys... because they fetishize gay relationships.... Like plz stop. Even more so the incest ships... Like no. Don't do that. Plz. I mean sure I can be like "they'd make a cute couple" but I don't "ship it." I only ever really ship IRL people. XD
i used to be in fsndoms where everyone shipped people and i did too but i was 12 so, like, ive grown since ok...
teres nothing inherently wrong w it (except for shipping real people ...) but hjhkjyfjktukgjjk i dont really like it and shippers are often so ****ing weid, like youll b shilling and then u see a fifty replies deep thread/post on if it really is wrong to ship the like 13-14 yr old twins from some tv show and there are at least 5 images included and then someone makes a callout that op is a pedophile and then the op makes a callout that the first person is an abusive exclusionist.....
i try to stay away from anything w shipping but the discourse still pops up somewhere and kills me
I tend to not even notice it. I'm not a shipper, not one bit, but I don't mind if people do it.
Though I did have a friend that was a straight female and she was REALLY obsessed with shipping male characters with other male characters. It was just kind of too weird for me, though it wouldn't have been weird if she was gay.
I love shipping- though I don't really like the term. I don't ever use the term shipping.
I love how many so many fanworks can come from shipping, and I really like reading fanfic. The only time I don't like shipping is when it's sexualizing a child or when it's real life people. Shipping should be purely fictional, and writing fanfiction about real people is gross
domestic, I'm super cheap and will opt for the closest to free (or free shipping if able) option
imports, if given the option, I almost always go with ems. exceptions for if money's really tight and/or shipping charges end up being too absurdly high with that option
i like it! i don't ship irl people though and i think it's like,, weird. i mean if you think they're cute together u do u but i just dont like it when ppl like,,, try and shove it in their face or draw/write porn of them or smth. same about any ship, really, it's annoying when people push it @ the creators. like, yo, let them do their business. some ppl take it too far and yeah,,, just chill please lol. tons of discourse comes up from it like guys it's not that serious.
anyways as long as its not pedophilic or abusive or fetishizing or whatever, then it's alright w me. also as long as ur minding ur own damn business.
some things i ship things for, some not. depends on the content. like for smth like free! and voltron, i'm p set on who i ship (lmfao take a guess). other things i don't really ship much, or there's just so many character's i'd be chill with most anything tbh.
overall i just think it's a great way to have some fun, esp writing or drawing for it (to an extent, blah blah, you know what i mean). i think to an extent, many people are "shippers", but just don't go by that term cuz they don't feel so intensely about it or don't like the weird ppl its associated with.
and man, i'm a fan of svtfoe, and i'm behind on the recent episodes, and i didnt know that stuff w starco was going on. personally i don't rlly want them together cuz it doesnt make sense to me, and i don't see the need for there to be a romance in that show. it's also real nice in a children's show to see male and female friends just, being friends, and not making kids feel like there's always gonna be something ~more~.
i'm fine with shippin as long it's not real people. like dan and phil's fandom is crazy as f**k since their fans ship them too... hardcore, and i can't even read their youtube comments without seeing a comment about them every 2 seconds. it drives me nuts sometimes, and it's just weird. same with fanfiction like issa no for me. as what the comment above said, as long people are minding their business, and not fetishizing it or whatever is ok. i also don't like incest/abusive ships like sam & dean from supernatural, and harley quinn with joker, like wtf why lol
If people want to ship among themselves in their communities, I couldn?t care less. Have your fun with it. Heck, if you want to write fanfics or whatever? I?m an aspiring author so even though I don?t care about shipping, I?m not going to discourage someone from experimenting with their writing and expressing themselves creatively. It?s not my sort of thing so I don?t involve myself with it or really interact with it in any way. I have some acquaintances who have either been into shipping or been around it and I?ve heard of some questionable stuff going on in some circles, including but not limited to getting really creepy about real people, and that there can be a lot of stupid drama surrounding it.
There is one aspect about it which I don?t like: when it influences mass-market art. For my part, the most glaring example of this is recent Fire Emblem games. No offense intended to fans of Awakening and Fates, but on a certain level the shipping leads to a less intellectual, less interesting, and less worthwhile product. The plots become less meaningful when you can marry all these characters together, personal compatibility be damned, because you think they make a cute couple. There?s no intrigue as to what the characters? futures will be like when you see what their children look like all grown up, and that in fact limits what you can do with them: in past games, some characters just wander off never to be seen again or die in an avalanche or something. That adds some level of ?realism? that the player can engage with that leaves the modern shipping model feeling artificial and vapid. Don?t even get me started on how godawful of an idea the baby dimension in Fates is. That last bit, the dimension, is another negative aspect that Awakening and Fates introduced to the series: that the different continents the games in the series take place on all have to be connected somehow and that there has to be a timeline like Legend of Zelda. That?s somewhat a tangent so I?ll get off of it, but the point is that the way the shipping has been handled has had a negative effect on the worlds of those games themselves on a base level. It?s a ripple effect.
That isn?t to say shipping is inherently a negative. It?s the way it?s handled and presented. The series has handled ?shipping? far better with Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War back in 1996. In that game, you can pair one generation of characters and this will lead to their children becoming characters. How? Because
the first generation are mostly all killed by their enemy and their children have to take up the fight to stop the bad guys
of a timeskip. Fire Emblem 6 and 7 handled this well too, 7 being the prequel and Roy and Lilina being the children of Eliwood and Hector, two of the Lords of FE7, being the main characters of 6 and the general plot of the 6 being a result of actions taken in 7. God forbid there be character development like that for the child characters and even that degree of thought put into it in the 2010s though, we just need to get to the kissing and the ridiculous petting, right? They may as well just make visual novels to appeal to the demand instead of tactics games.
Another example, though one which I don?t have firsthand experience with, is the Legend of Korra. I never watched the Legend of Korra, both because I didn?t have the channel and because I heard from others that it wasn?t half as good as Avatar: The Last Airbender. I did get a reasonable enough understanding of it through reading and from my acquaintances who did watch. I remember the whole Korra x Asami pairing being a big point of contention because it was just sort of slapped on at the end without much buildup when compared to other couples in the Avatar universe. This was a big deal not only because some of my acquaintances are LGBTQ and found it to be rather cheap and uninspired ?representation? but also because it?s just lazily thrown in almost as an afterthought just to raise interest and word of mouth.
Assuming that is the case (because frankly I?m not interested in watching the series and will likely never have firsthand knowledge on the matter) and to wrap it back into how modern Fire Emblem handles shipping to conclude this massive rant, if there has to be shipping, just please put the necessary effort into making sure the plot of your work maintains intellectual credibility and isn?t just pandering. In an age where people are wanting better representation of LGBTQ characters and non-straight relationships, anything less than equal respect and consideration for the characters in question does a disservice to your narrative and your product?s reputation. Shipping doesn?t have to be a bad thing, but when you can hardly tell the difference between the amount of effort and thought a teenager with raging hormones and learning about and exploring their sexuality puts into their fanfic and the amount of effort and thought put into something made by adults put out for mass-market consumption and should hopefully be appealing to all demographics, that?s not a good look and is a rather stupid way to do business.
TL;DR: On its own at its basest level, generally inoffensive and I don?t mind its existence. Taken to extremes, toxic and damaging to anything it touches, especially, but not exclusively, art. Even though I don?t like shipping, I?m all for it if there is clear effort and thought put into it and it?s, frankly, done better than it has been so far.
I honestly think most shipping is fine if it's between two characters someone made or between two characters made by friends or something with consent from both people. Now, what I don't like is when someone ships their oc with a canon character or with someone else's character without consent. This just makes the person seem like some 10 year old fangirl. Example: someone ships their oc with Sasuke from Naruto. Holy crap I see this a lot and at this point it gets annoying.
Also, shipping real people is kinda crazy. I mean, I used to ship a LOTTT of irl ships when I was a usual edgy 8 year old (heck, I even ship a few irl ships now. Only two though.) but it just seems... wrong. Many of these people are married or in relationships and shipping them with someone else is just plain creepy :')
Another one.. don't really see this a lot, but shipping a human with an animal. WHY.
And finally, abusive relationships and incest. WHY DO PEOPLE SHIP THIS?? I don't even get it ovo;
Abusive relationships meaning anything from threats and minor damage to beating the crap out of each other. And incest... you should already know what it is. It's shipping close relatives, like siblings, parent and child, etc. This is illegal in (most or all, I'm hoping and assuming) many countries and I have no idea why people ship this kind of stuff.
I'm now gonna end this on a way lighter note by saying that a lot of canon and oc ships are cute. I ship a lot of ships, mainly anime ones (considering I'm a huge dork and I'm obsessed with anime). My best friend and I even have a ship of our own with two of our characters!
So, most ships are alright with me, I guess. As long as they're *legal* and make a happy couple, they're pretty much fine.
domestic, I'm super cheap and will opt for the closest to free (or free shipping if able) option
imports, if given the option, I almost always go with ems. exceptions for if money's really tight and/or shipping charges end up being too absurdly high with that option
I came to give a similar answer and complain about how my amazon two day shipping has taken almost a week lol but apparently they're talking about something else???

i often end up shipping people/characters if im really emotionally invested in something. but like,, just for fun? im kind of scared/disgusted by people who go too far with shipping, especially when real people are concerned - i can read fanfics or enjoy cute interactions but im not obsessed with the idea of those people being in a relationship and i dont believe that thyre actually together lol
i dont see anything wrong in shipping as long as it's contained and respectful. dont bring it up to the people involved, dont spread it too far, be in touch with reality and understand that its literally just an imaginary concept and not a real thing. people like larry or phan shippers are...... messed up and a perfect example of tinhatting gone too far. larry shippers literally ruined relationships between the people they ship, their friends, relatives and loved ones, all while claiming that all they do is out of "love and support" for the ppl they ship with each other. messed up on so many levels.
also.... shipping is very often tied very closely to fetishising of lgbt relationships. i see so many people in fandoms obsess over the sexual aspect of the "relationship", discussing sexual dynamics, propagating stereotypes, projecting cishet gender roles onto lgbt ships or misgendering people/characters just to fit their narrative. thats really fd up and concerning tbh, its a very toxic behaviour and the worst part is that those poeple dont seem to mind it or see anything wring with it while simuntanously claiming to be supperters of the lgbt community. its why i dont really feel comfortable among shippers and just keep to myself.
I love shipping!
I tend to like the more "realistic" ships though some may think I'm boring lmao.
My main ship is Zack Martin and Maddie Fitzpatrick from The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Obviously though, I ship it from The Suite Life on Deck and onwards so it's at least kinda legal lmao.
The Doctor (9/10) and Rose Tyler. They are SO cute holy crap yo!
Those are my main ones. I have side ones that I don't fangirl on as much but still think they're super cute like Tamako and Mochizou from Tamako Market or Nagisa and Tomoya from Clannad.
i was genuinely confused for a sec before i read the post
meh, i think it can generally be harmless so long you're not pressuring any real people or being creepy about it. i dont think it should be such a serious thing tho like your example
