Super Mario movie!!!!

i'll go see it when it's out, hopefully it's good!

didn't read through the whole thread so maybe someone mentioned this already... but there's no way it can be worse than this

for those of you who haven't seen the original mario bros movie before:
  • no one in their right mind would recommend you spend the time watching it
  • and yes, that is king koopa in the upper left corner of the movie poster

I was definitely going to see it no matter how bad it looked, but Chris Pratt’s Mario voice is surprisingly bad in my opinion. Like I’m not sure what I WAS expecting, but I wasn’t expecting he would just do basically his normal voice lol.

I'm excited for it.

My only complaint is Mario just sounds like Chris Pratt. I'm not a person that thinks it has to be Charles Martinet, but at least make Mario have a more believable accent.

I'm worried about how Donkey Kong will be portrayed with Seth Rogen... please don't be horrible.

Honestly, the original Mario movie is worth watching, but only as a fascinating case study for how unfathomably absurd and misguided an adaptation can be. There's the questionable premise that any sane human being would look at and immediately shut down, but not only did Nintendo--after thoroughly scrutinizing it--give it their blessing, but contributed an inordinate amount to its funding. Then there's the outlandish yet incredibly cheap-looking set pieces that look like they were filmed inside a random warehouse because they were. Then there's the terrible writing, hideous characters, and deeply unpleasant visual effects. And then, you have all the chaos behind the scenes, from the unenviable if not outright dangerous working conditions of the set, to the extremely incompetent pair of directors. And finally, at the end of all that, the movie has the absolute nerve to tease a sequel.

I'm not attempting to argue that the original film is so bad that it's good, so much that it's something that is so nonsensical in every single tiny facet that it's simply fascinating.

I expect that this movie will, at worst, just be very corporate and loaded with Hollywood cliches. Probably on par with Illumination's Dr. Seuss adaptations. At its absolute worst, it could always be like the recent Scoob movie, which was... quite unpleasant, if critics and audiences are to be believed. I don't know; I didn't bother watching it.

i didn’t tune in for the direct, but i did watch the trailer. i can’t compare it to the 1993 adaption since i never saw it (and didn’t even know it existed until recently lol), but i think it looks well made from what i’ve seen! i won’t be watching it as i’m not super into the mario franchise, plus i can’t really get past chris pratt voicing mario lmao, but the quality looks awesome! i also think jack black voicing bowser was a great choice. :)

I saw the 93 live action movie once or twice by chance on tv. I thought the plot wasn’t too bad, the acting is decent, and most of the special effects were good for the time. The problems I saw were Bowser/King Koopa’s hair should have been bright red as the spikes looked cool, Daisy should have bee Princess Toadstool with Peach being her nickname as I think she was referred to as Peach in a game manual by the time the movie came out and she didn’t need to be blonde as her hair color was pretty inconsistent until Mario 64, and everything about how the Goombas look. How do you get tiny headed dinosaur people from walking mushrooms? And the writing was pretty awkward and there was dialogue that was pretty bad but with a few tweaks and changes here and there, you could have had a much better movie. The actors were all doing the best they could with what they were given and it shows that they were at least trying to save the movie. Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, and Dennis Hopper all have excellent movies and rarely disappoint with their roles but actors are only as good in their movies as the writing is. Live Action Mario was campy which isn’t a bad thing but the whole setting is dark and shadowy which the campiness sort of ruins the tone of the movie. Daisy was only in the Mario franchise for two years and only in one game which made it weird that she was chosen to be the female lead as she hasn’t had an actual main role in any Mario game since her debut and at this point is stuck being a second rate Princess Peach. Even in Smash Bros Ultimate players would rather use Peach than Daisy.

from the trailer, i'm a fan - i may go and see it purely for charlie day voicing luigi, though overall it looks very cool beans

Hearing Charles voice longer lines for Mario is kind of weird. He has done it for conventions like reading a Mario book in his Mario voice and it's really off. It's not bad, but it's not something I'd think would work well for an entire hour. His voice works great for small lines, grunts, cheers, and the such, but with it feels like Charles' would lack the variety to pull off different tones/energies for the variety of emotions.

Not saying Chris Pratt's is amazing. His could be not good (we didn't hear a lot of his lines) so I'm giving him a chance even if it didn't wow me. I do agree, they could've gotten a better cast pick for Mario, as Jack Black as Bowser and Kamek both sounded great.

I hope the Princess makes lotsa milk steak!

It looks really nice, exactly like the games. I feel like I want to watch it, but i probably won’t watch it when it first comes out. Probably sometime in the long future.

I agree with everyone saying that Jack Black has done an incredible job playing Bowser! Nailed it.

I know someone else has mentioned French Mario's voice, but I think all of the French VAs have done a stellar job with pretty much every voice revealed so far (Luigi still uses Charlie Day's voice clips though). They're even well lip-synced.

I haven't watched all of the other languages yet. Looking forward to seeing what they do with the Japanese dub.

I already mentioned my thoughts on Mario and Bowser's voices
I just want to say Kamek's voice really caught me off guard since I'm used to his high-pitched witch like voice in the games so hearing his voice in the trailer was really unexpected and I needed to hear it twice but honestly it's not bad at all I could see this working for his voice for the entire movie
I could briefly hear some grunting and vocalizing from Luigi at the end and so far it sounds pretty good but I still don't know how they are gonna do his voice
Toad personally sounds horrible to me and it's not because I'm used to Toad's iconic high-pitched childish scream-y voice like I could imagine a wide variety of voices for Toad and this is not one of them if someone played his voice in the trailer to me I would have never guessed that was Toad
I was picturing Kamek sounding like Jerry Lewis in his wacky comedies.

Okay I just watched the trailer finally and I have to say, I'm not hating the choice of Chris Pratt for the voice of Mario after all. There is a subtle accent.

I love how threatening Bowser looks and sounds too!! I think I'm gonna have to watch this one.

I think the trailer looks fine. I'd like to see one or two more short ones to hear more lines from Mario though.
I think I'd be willing to watch this one at home through renting/streaming, but not in theaters. I think it would be worth seeing at least once.
