Super Mario movie!!!!

not peach having an unsuitable voice just as i feared 😭 she sounds too... i don't know, it reminds me of rapunzel from tangled, and it's not the vibe i get from peach rip. it's still not as bad as chris pratt's mario, but it doesn't compare to bowser or even luigi.

My opinion of the film has honestly lowered after this trailer. While there were some aspects I wasn't fond of in the original trailer, it did have some moments I would describe as... cute. Not cinematic excellence, but cute. This trailer seemed almost fixated on demonstrating only the most shudder-inducing jokes, not to mention just how at best generic and at worst horrifically unfitting the voices really are. Everything just looks and feels like it's been aggressively focus tested and stripped of charisma or personality.

I'm sure children will enjoy the film just fine, and I'm already seeing a lot of people saying they liked this trailer better than the first one, so I'm probably in the minority, and that's okay. But it's the same problem I have with the Sonic movie, where I don't understand (even after fixing the design) how it constitutes anything other than the hopelessly uninspired Hollywood regurgitation that people were saying since the beginning that it would be. Perhaps I've just become old and jaded, but absolutely nothing clicks with me as a fan of Nintendo games, or as a fan of animation in general. That doesn't necessarily mean I think it looks horrible mind you; it just feels like this post...

...only real.

Haven't watched the trailers yet (only saw the clip comparing Mario's English and French voices...I don't want to go into that debate but I am one of the people who is lowkey salty that we aren't getting Charles Martinet or at least someone who is trying capture the Mario voice). I honestly have no interest in watching them and am going to be waiting for people's opinions when the movie is out to decide if I'll watch it or not. Mario has been a big part of my life starting from early childhood so it's not a lack of interest in the franchise (I have been dreaming about going to Super Nintendo World since before it opened! 😭), I just...don't have a lot of expectation in the movie, American movies based off anime and games never quite do it, haha. If I do watch it...I think I'm gonna look for the French dub first. 😅

The trailer looked pretty cool. I'll be seeing it whenever it comes out. Might rent it instead of going to the theaters, who knows. But seeing Mario be a moron for the entire trailer was kinda annoying. I hope there is some saving grace in there and he gets his moments to shine like the fighter he is in the games. Same with Luigi. I hope he doesn't get thrown to the side as the 'damsel in distress' now that Peach seems to be taking more of spotlight lead.

I know there are a lot saying it looks so bad, but give it a chance. It's not even out yet. I got crapped on all the time for when New Horizon first came out because of how lacking it was released.

I'm super excited! I like Luigi's interaction with Bowser. I'm a little confused as to how everything will fit together tho but I guess that's how trailers work lol. I can't wait for April 7. Even if it turns out to be a mid movie it'll be fun to make fun of. So I'm excited!

It certainly looks better than the 93 Mario movie. This one is at least trying to be faithful to the games. I’m wondering since Peach mentions that there are different galaxies if Rosalina will make a surprise appearance.

Something that I do enjoy about the trailer is that Peach's characterization is much closer to her portrayal in the Super Mario Adventures comic, where she is considerably more proactive than she is in the games.

I don't think it was an intentional callback to that, mind you. I think they were just following the trends of relatively recent movies of similar genre and demographic (Toy Story 4 comes to mind), but I suppose it's nice nevertheless.

I remember that. And I think Luigi was wearing her dress.

I'm not sure about this, but they did pack a few different references in the trailer alone. So there might be a lot of different references/homages in the full movie. It will be pretty cool to see what they choose to add.

I've held off on commenting because I really wasn't sure how I felt after the first trailer. There were good and bad things about it, in my opinion. After watching the second trailer, I might be more likely to watch it whenever it's available on streaming. It's not something I would pay to go see in theaters, but then very little is these days.

I liked the portrayal of Peach. I liked all the references I saw in the second trailer. Both trailers had some cute moments. The only thing that still bugs me and probably always will is Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario. I don't know who they should have gotten to do his voice, but definitely not him.

I like Anya Taylor Joy but I don't think her voice fits Peach very well! She just sounds too... normie. But then again I kinda like Chris Pratt Mario, even if it is a bit bland.

I definitely want to see this movie regardless, and I don't even care for Mario! Jack Black as Bowser is soooo good

It looks fine, but I probably won't watch it. Just not interested in video game movies too much.

For once I might actually purposely seek out my native language dub to watch a movie because dayum, I can’t really overlook the Mario voice. Any time I got immersed while watching the trailer and Mario opened his mouth it instantly took me back to reality questioning whether I should even bother with the trailer. I also don’t find Peach’s voice fitting at all. Peach is undoubtedly a strong woman capable of looking after herself, but her voice sounds super girl-bossy and doesn’t mesh with the concept I have of her in my head. Visually the movie is very interesting to me though. So I might just end up watching in a foreign language (or my own) with English subs.

Here's a video comparison of the English and French versions.

Really, it seems that Mario's voice is the only one that is overwhelmingly better. The other voices are more or less just direct translations of the English version.

But it can't be understated just how having a proper voice for Mario does help the film. I've seen some people direct praise towards Chris Pratt's "wahoo" at the end and I simply can not fathom it, because it sounds like a boring, stale imitation of someone drunk at a particularly dull party doing a Mario impression. The French version is so much more full of life and charisma and energy. Literally any other actor, even if they sounded nothing like Martinet would have been better than Chris Pratt as long as they sounded anything other than completely apathetic to the role.

I really don't care for Peach's voice either. It sounds too generic.

Speaking of generic, my hype is going down for this movie. The scene with Luigi in the teaser gave me a little hope that it might be a little different from their usual movies, but I can see that this is probably going to be as noisy/slapstick-centric as the rest of Illumination's works. Which is a shame, because they did do a great job with Despicable Me in my opinion. Since then, every movie has been getting increasingly silly.

Saw the trailer about 30 minutes after it was released, and I'm ecstatic! The movie looks stunning and I'm not too bothered about the voices, plus I loved the references! ^^

Oh my. That's... a bit lower than I expected. I'll be interested in hearing more specific criticisms in the coming days.

The rating could change though since the movie just came out. I don’t think there’s any way this Mario movie would ever be even worse than the live action movie since the character designs follow the official Nintendo artwork with a few tweaks for the big screen and is much closer to the official Mario lore.

Also keep in mind that’s just the critics score more often than not they rate things more harshly than the general audience will. We should start getting audience scores over the next few days.

In the meantime I’m going to wait to see this movie. If it’s meh as it’s starting to sound then I’d rather see it at home than have to pay for an expensive movie ticket.
