Super Mario movie!!!!

My boyfriend and I are going to dinner tonight, and I also ordered tickets for this. We’ll be going for their late showing, so I will update with my thoughts after.

I’m going tomorrow night with my favorite person. Very much looking forward to seeing this. Usually I’m not a movie person but this is an exception. I’m happy to see one of my favorite video game franchises on the big screen.

Oh my. That's... a bit lower than I expected. I'll be interested in hearing more specific criticisms in the coming days.
That's lower than I thought, too. I was expecting it to be around 60-70% for the critics rating. Most fans will probably rate it 90-100% as they normally do. Critics are too harsh, fans are too forgiving. Maybe when it comes out on DVD, I'll consider picking up a copy then instead.

The rating could change though since the movie just came out. I don’t think there’s any way this Mario movie would ever be even worse than the live action movie since the character designs follow the official Nintendo artwork with a few tweaks for the big screen and is much closer to the official Mario lore.
Nobody is suggesting that it will be worse or even remotely as awful as the live action film, and the Rotten Tomatoes score reflects that. The live action movie sits around 29% for both critics and audiences, and even that I feel is a tad generous. (Granted, it's a movie that predates Rotten Tomatoes, so it's difficult to gauge the accuracy of it, but I can't imagine it's terribly off the mark) But it's possible for a movie to be less than satisfactory on a variety of different scales.

I don't feel that critics necessarily rate things more harsh as a general practice; rather, I think they just view films for different reasons than fans and general moviegoers do. I also expected it to be higher, because most critics don't give a toss about loyalty to the source material, and (complete disasters like The Emoji Movie aside) will normally rate any animated movie with decent enough production value at a default of high-60's to low-70's as a base. It's worth keeping in mind that most major review outlets have devolved into glorified advertisements, and there's plenty of financial incentive to--consciously or unconsciously--skew perspective, so it's right to be skeptical.

But as far as video game adaptations specifically are concerned, my opinion more often than not tends to align with the critics. The first Sonic movie, for instance, sits at around 64% and I think that's generally fair as far as general audiences are concerned. It's not a complete disaster, kids will probably like it. But I personally found the film to be mediocre and by the books. Not completely unwatchable rubbish, but not something I would ever willingly sit down to watch. And even before the RT score came in, the Mario movie was shaping up for me to be about the same.

It's at a 3.5/5 score on letterboxd right now which to me means it's probably enjoyable but nothing groundbreaking, i didn't plan on seeing it in theatres but it does have a nice artstyle. kid me always wanted a mario movie so i'll probably check it out when its streaming

I’d love to see it, just not right away, so the hype/crowds die down a bit.

(Also my fave parts of the trailer have been the Mario Kart, Toads, and the little caged star/Luma that says dark things in a cute voice….😭)

My birthday is the next Monday (April 17th) I won’t watch it ON my birthday…but probably sometime after.

Remember no matter what the critics say its all "opinions" at the end the day. You have to watch the movie yourself and see what you personally think.
Obviously. The point of bringing up review scores (hopefully) is to compare their criticisms against your tastes and preferences, so that you can make an informed decision on how to spend your time and money. Not to throw your hands in the air and proclaim, "God hath spoken, this movie is trash!"

We just left the theater. It was an enjoyable experience overall. The pacing was a bit off, and certain references are shallow, but it was enjoyable.
The pacing is expected as it is a pretty short film, but it covers decent ground throughout the story.

Younger audience and long term fans alike will enjoy it.

I'm excited to see it, I don't expect it to be groundbreaking or anything. I really enjoy the style and I really like Jack Black as an actor. I won't be seeing it this weekend because I know it'll be busy and its easter weekend on top of that so I'm going to try and see it next week with a friend.. hopefully it won't be as busy.

saw the movie today! my whole family went to see it lmao, i thought it was good.

i’m surprised on how much fan service they did. the movie was actually very good, originally i was against chris pratt voicing mario but it works. the only thing i didn’t like about the movie is that i feel like it moved too fast but other than that it’s a 9.5/10 imo

i really liked what they did with bowser’s personality, how they made him scary but at the same time he was funny. that scene where bowser was playing piano and singing about peach was hilarious, i demand a full length musical album from bowser at once.

I'm going to watch the movie tomorrow afternoon and I'm BEYOND excited. My partner has told me he thinks Ill really enjoy all of the references and jokes!

I haven't seen it yet and probably won't until it comes to a streaming service. BUt yesterday I was talking to my mom on the phone, and she told me how my 7 year old nephew came up to her and told her that he didn't think he'd be able to wait to see the movie. Like he wouldn't be able to make it through like 2 days of waiting lol. I think it's nice that Mario still has that appeal to the newer generations!
