Super Mario movie!!!!

Nintendo would've nipped this in the bud fast if it was really bad like some of you are making it out to be. And you know you'll still watch it anyway despite how 'bad' it is.
not necessarily, and considering how many people obviously think it's ill-fitting to some degree, it's clearly not a case of being reactionary or simply wanting mario's usual professional, experienced voice actor in the role for consistency or familiarity. i, for one, personally have no feelings on that either way, but it would still have been a better choice than chris pratt, who has minimal voice acing experience and seems to use the same (read: his normal) voice in the few roles he has done. i wouldn't have cared who it was, so long as they sounded as mario looks, which chris pratt doesn't. for me, and obviously plenty of others, there's a disconnect between the voice and the character -- like, if you had played his voice lines to me, without me knowing who it was, mario wouldn't have even been close to my first guess.

besides, 90% of people aren't saying the movie is bad, just that chris pratt as mario is bad, so obviously most of them are still going to see it? it might be insufferable listening to him for the entire runtime, but jack black is already phenomenal as bowser (who people are going to inevitably root for now), and the visuals are still stunning. so, it's not really a 'gotcha' to say people are still going to watch it.

this is like saying "sony would've nipped [the original sonic design] in the bud fast if it was really bad" but they thought it was a perfectly fine design until it was revealed, and they got major backlash lmao. unfortunately, i don't think chris pratt's casting has or is going to do the same level of damage and result in a recast. a girl can dream though. (and after hearing him as mario, i definitely cannot see him as garfield. god, get this man out of the booth-)

I remember that there were a lot of people believing that Sonic's first design was a publicity stunt. Chris Pratt wouldn't have been my first pick. I would've chosen Danny Devito over him lol, but from what I've head it doesn't sound that bad. With me anyway, I'd have to see a fuller trailer since there were so few lines.

I don't think Martinet specifically has to voice Mario, but it is rather jarring that they gave him a voice that is both ill-fitting and just really kind of generic. Chris Pratt is basically to movies as Troy Baker is to video games. They're both talented enough actors, but the majority of their roles are directed to be as bland and devoid of life as humanly possible. By contrast, this is what the French version of the film is doing.

It's not Martinet, obviously, but you can very clearly see what they're going for.

Sonic has had a plethora of terrible redesigns and a history of some shockingly bad entries in his own series, so while the original Sonic design was horrendous, it's also completely within SEGA's MO to go full speed ahead into something terrible and then be completely at a loss when audiences react negatively to it. Though I don't really have a dog in that fight anyway, because I thought the final design was bad, too. And I didn't like the movie at all. Yes, including Jim Carey. Or literally anything online friends have insisted is actually really good in spite of all initial impressions.

(EDIT: I should mention that I'm aware that Sony was the one ultimately responsible for the designs in the movie, but my point was that people are already used to this kind of thing from Sonic as brand.)

But to a very limited extent, I do understand the argument that Nintendo has a standard of quality that is typically seen as higher than that of a company like SEGA. But it's the kind of defense that one would use before the trailer is released, not after.

aw, man, how come the french get a cool mario? now, i'm just getting, "mom, can we have mario?" "no, we have mario at home" [insert chris pratt mario] vibes. like i said, i'm personally not fussed about whether or not it's martinet specifically, like some people are, but i do firmly think we should've gotten a voice akin to the french dub as opposed to... what we did lmao. even this movie reviewer i sometimes watch, who has no stake in the voice, and isn't wildly familiar with nintendo, thinks chris pratt doesn't sound right for mario's design lmao.

saw this further down that tweet thread

how is that all of the other languages so far effectively nail the tone of voice while we're stuck with chris pratt, bye 😭

As I expected, we have boring, realistic designs that look just off enough to be difficult to look at, which I say is far worse than any ‘Ugly Sonic’ situation (which was Paramount by the way, NOT Sony). Why does Mario have human arms?!

Also, the Mushroom Kingdom looks like Super Nintendo World which I was also immensely disappointed by, so… 💀

At least we have a killer performance from Kamek’s actor. And maybe we’ll get some good memes out of this, but otherwise, not seeing this. I wish they had gone with Dreamworks instead seeing as they and Illumination are owned by the same parent company (NBCUniversal).

I think my opinion reflects the majority. Animation is beautiful, and Bowser is perfection. The penguin scene is hilarious. Mario's voice was disappointing, but we've only heard two lines, so I'm hoping they weren't a good, overall representation of Mario's dialogue. I think it's better when the voice isn't identifiable to a specific actor. Either way, I'll still watch it for sure. 😊

I enjoyed what the trailer showed. My favorite scene was Kamek announcing Bowser who then came out of the flames. I have no problem with the voices so far, but I will say that Keegan Michael Key's Toad was spot on. I had some reservations about Jack Black's Bowser, but if that's how he'll be in the rest of the movie, I'll sleep easy tonight.

Jack Black as Bowser? Perfection. Chris Pratt as Mario? I’ll reserve judgement for now, given we’ve only heard a couple of lines, but my first impression is that Chris Pratt sounds like Chris Pratt. The French version is so so so much better, even down to the scream.

I’m still excited, and it’ll still be the first movie I brave a movie theatre for post-pandemic. 😊

Shockingly solid looking. Designs are great and I like all the voices except not sold on Chris Pratt (not a bad voice but it’s just there). It’s fresh seeing this take with these details and redesigns. Animation is good. The movie seems like it would be generic but enjoyable. I wish they had made a joke about throwing a penguin off the cliff tho lolll

okay but real talk I actually cried watching this yesterday. I love every single thing about it and I can't wait to see more trailers as we get closer to the movie's release date!!

and it's especially nice bc (I know this is kinda off topic but) I've been struggling really bad w depression again and watching this trailer made me so so happy. I may be a bit dramatic but this series is one of the few things that keeps me going in this world. it really truly does make me so happy, and this movie is an absolute blessing 🥺💞

I thought the trailer looked okay, but not a fan of chris pratt playing mario. It just sounds too much like chris pratt and not enough like mario.

So little of the movie was shown in a trailer. They could very well still do this lol. The poster had an antique store with NES bit era items. So I can see them adding a bit more comedic moments in there. It is Illumination after all. And with a game like Mario, which doesn't take itself as seriously as say Zelda or Metroid, moments like the snowball fight don't seem that out of character.

It certainely is a cinematic experience of Super Mario. I don't see any reason to complain, my niece will love watching it. The whole celebrity as voice actors shtick is getting old though, Chris Pratt just doesn't have the talent and the movie doesn't need any name actors to succeed. In times like this I'm glad to live in a dub-country, it's been a saving grace for many animated movies.

Meh, it's another video game that's been turned into a movie, and the track record for these movies are never good so it's pretty obvious this one will follow the same suit. Personally I won't be watching it, but anyone who does I hope you enjoy it.
