The "I learned something new today!" Thread

I was watching a video about royals you are most likely to be related to, and dig some more digging on one of them— Ismail Ibn Sharif (Sultan of Morocco). I found this fact interesting. I wonder what would have happened if James II actually converted to Islam.

There’s a political party in Costa Rica called Party of the Sun. However, I can’t find much information about what they stand for.

Last night when I couldn't sleep, I discovered that my eBook reader app has some awesome stats! I can check how many words/pages the book has and how long I've been reading, the obvious ones, but I can also see exactly when I was reading, how long each session took, my reading speed and the estimated time to finish. I had no idea it tracked all that!

Billie Burke (who played Glinda in “The Wizard of Oz”) was one of the first female talk show hosts. In 1951, she had one called “At Home with Billie Burke.”

Dog Man is called Super Chien (translated: Super Dog) in French. I guess it makes sense to not go for a literal translation lol, but I think the name is kind of endearing.

Me valé means "I don't give a ****". Probably a Spanish phrase from the way I heard it. Good for when someone's talking smack about me online and I need to do something about them. (From a live stream on TikTok I overheard my sis watching ;w;) I probably won't do that though since I'm too kind...

Genghis Khan’s wife Börte was well-respected by the Mongolian people. She was seen as a wise motherly figure who arranged politically advantageous marriages for her daughters.

Murr from Impractical Jokers follows Miracle-Gro on Instagram. Also, Miracle-Gro has an Instagram account?

I learned about this neat app called TooGoodToGo where local businesses sell surprise bags of leftover food for cheap to reduce waste. I was excited to try it out but was disappointed to find out there’s not many places in my area that participates.

That is an amazing idea. I wonder if it'll pick up more soon. I know with stores, they get a tax write off if they donate old food to farmers for their swine. Same with food truck spills I think. I know factories will sell their imperfect food produced, like mishaped Skittles, to farmers at a discount for their swine and cows as a cheap carb because it's cheaper than corn.
It's weird how our society has this standard of perfectly shaped food. Just look at the potatoes at the store vs how potatoes actually look before they are sorted as store worthy and ugly vegetables. I am not sure what they do with the ugly potatoes. Maybe they sell them to companies that use them in the production of a product or swine farmers.

Clams and mussels are mollusks.
I always saw them as a another member of shellfish, like shrimp or lobster.

... Snails have shells though too.. but I don't think of them as food so I don't think of them as shellfish, just mollusks.
But octopus and squid are mollusks and I think of them as food, but they lack a shell.

I learned the difference between "nein" and "nee", which both mean "no" in German.

"nein" is used to say, no, absolutely not. it's used when you're absolutely sure the answer is no.

"nee" is used to say, no, that's not quite right, or no, you're mistaken. it's a more gentle, or perhaps uncertain, way of saying it.

Grape juice was invented by Thomas Bramwell Welch in 1869, hence the brand Welch’s. He created it specifically for communion at his Methodist church; this was before refrigeration was available.

Apparently, Text Document can autocorrect. I found out a minute ago when I was fan writing a moveset for the Villager from Mario Kart 8 (Who I dubbed, Islander) for the next Smash Bros game.

I still think the moveset I gave him is pretty busted.

Anoka, Minnesota is considered the “Halloween Capital of the World” because it held one of the first Halloween parades in 1920. It still holds a bunch of Halloween parades.

I don’t know if y’all know who Christine Jorgensen was, but she was a WWII veteran best known as the first American to undergo gender reassignment surgery.
(1950s)

Now, I knew about Christine, but not her nightclub act. She would sing “I Enjoy Being a Girl” (from the musical Flower Drum Song) and change into a Wonder Woman costume. In the early ‘80s, Warner Communications (who owned the rights to Wonder Woman) asked her to stop, so she switched to a Superwoman costume. She did this for the rest of her career; DC Comics didn’t know or didn’t care. (I hope they were early trans rights supporters.)
