The "I learned something new today!" Thread

"Pill bugs, also known as roly-polies, potato bugs, or woodlice, can remove heavy metals like lead, arsenic, cadmium, copper, and zinc from soil. These metals crystallize in their midgut, preventing them from leaching into groundwater. This allows pill bugs to live in contaminated soil where other species cannot."
Who knew. I kind of ran into this information because I saw a random post on Facebook of someone selling basically selectively bred roly polies that had crazy colors. It sounds like they are best for a terrarium that doesn't have anything in it to eat these bugs.
I assume the ad showed up because I'm starting to look into live food cultures for fish out of curiosity.

Last night I was playing a trivia game and one of the answers was that Roseanne was the first sitcom to feature a gay wedding. However, this morning, I did some digging and found the actual one was Roc. Roc was a three-season sitcom on Fox, and the main cast were all successful stage actors. This was back in 1991, while the Roseanne gay wedding wasn't until 1995.

I learned that Doritos has MSG in it haha.

I don't mind that at all, a little dash of MSG makes a lot of things taste better 😋 I just know that some companies are proudly like "NO MSG" so I was a bit surprised to see it in the ingredient list on Doritos.

I learned that Disney World actually sells cigarettes. They are hidden under the counter away from children. I'm a non-smoker and don't care, but I overheard a conversation at the smoking area and I thought it was interesting.

Japan has their own version of Thanksgiving— Labor Thanksgiving Day. Celebrated annually on November 23rd. It’s about expressing gratitude to workers; kids write and send cards to firefighters, police officers, hospital staff, and the armed forces. Managers praise their employees for their efforts throughout the year.

Today I learned two things: something physics class, and that I don't have a good memory for physics.

Gabriel Williams, the actor who played Isaac (the grandma’s elderly boyfriend in Nutty Professor 2), was 88 years old. For some reason I thought the actor was a young guy who was made up to look older. He lived to be 102 years old.
