The Information Desk: Ask questions about the site here!

Is it possible to upload video files directly to the site that don't have to be uploaded to YouTube first? I'm sure this is an easy question to answer, though I'm unsure what the size limits are.

I've tried posting GIFs hosted on other sites, but the site would throw errors when processing them, thus forcing me to find a different one.

Video files are generally too large and as such probably can't be uploaded directly to TBT.

Though I'm not entirely sure if there's an actual restriction on them, or if the file size limitations inherently keeps people from uploading them.

Would Google Drive be supported? It's not listed in the media list, but it's YouTube-based, so it would work, right?

I don't think it would embed; it would probably just be pasted as a plain link.
Alright, thanks for the info. I'm planning on posting stuff from a YouTube alternative, so I'll have to figure that out as most of the sites in the supported list I don't want to use to post videos on.

Or worst case scenario, I'll upload what I want to post on YouTube but set the video to unlisted.

That would probably be the easiest thing to do, but I understand not everyone wants to keep attract of an account. I hope you find something that works for you.

I've always been too nervous to bring up any of the suggestions/ideas I have for TBT but after thinking about this a lot I just wanted to shoot my shot and share my idea.

So over a year ago I once mentioned that I really think it would be a fun idea if the staff could implement a feature that goes on our profiles where members can share their favorite animal crossing villager(s) either we could be able to type them out or select from a drop down list of all the 488 villagers that exist in animal crossing installments(or at least all 413 villagers that exist in new horizons)
this would go along with the optional game related information you can share on your profile such as your New Horizons character name and island, your New Leaf mayor and town, your 3DS/Switch/Pocket Camp friend codes and your New Leaf Dream address.

I think this feature would be really cool because there are numerous TBT members whom I'm curious what their favorite animal crossing villagers are because they never mentioned it.

Obviously this feature would be optional just like all the other profile fields for anyone who doesn't want to share, I think it would be fun and harmless. What does the staff think of this idea and could we ever see this feature be implemented in the foreseeable future?

Also while we are on the topic of discussing profile fields... I'm curious to know, how come there is an option to share your New Leaf dream address but not your New Horizons dream address? And will staff be removing the New Leaf dream address profile field option because in April you will no longer be able to visit New Leaf dream towns anymore so it doesn't serve much of a purpose to exist anymore.

It’s a nice idea for sure, but I can’t see anything like it being implemented along with any additional profile fields. There was a huge discussion a few years back about adding a pronoun field on our sidebar so we can see how people want to be referred to. Sure, you can add it in a user title or even in your signature, but sometimes members want to use those for other things. I’m glad the field exists within our profiles at least.

Personally, I’d like to see villagers included in the “today’s birthday” section on the homepage. I think it would be nice to see which villager has a birthday on that day and was somewhat surprised it wasn’t already a thing.

Hmm yeah I know of the drama surrounding the pronouns field option but if the feature was a drop down menu with options(such as the one I've seen staff use for past site events like "Master of Disguise") then nobody would be able to use it for malicious intentions if you can only select from options on the list. I wasn't suggesting this would show up on our sidebar because I'm aware staff doesn't like to add a bunch of options on our sidebars next to our posts, it would only show up if you go to someone's "about me" profile and look there.

I like your idea of putting "today's villager birthdays" on the homepage though!

I love this idea! I would really like to see something like this on TBT. I have an account on another forum with a feature similar to this, so I think it'd be possible since both forums use the same engine.
Yes! Something exactly like this! Hmm that's interesting maybe since both forums have Xenoforo or whatever there's hope for this to become a feature in the future!

Anyone else who uses TBT on an iPhone noticing weird glitches where text seems to be repeated at random on posts, only for it to go away at random or after a refresh? This doesn’t happen on a desktop.

Rough example of what I mean in the quotes:
I’m having a good day! My day has beenI’m having a good day! My day has been excellent!
This happens while typing, and rarely in the posted product. When I refresh the site, it fixes itself:

We actually did have a "Dream Villagers" profile field approx 2013-2020. This was removed alongside various other profile fields when we entered TBT 3.0.

Ah okay so we don't have these profile fields anymore because of the forum's updated software and layout, etc.?

Yes, that happened to me a week ago or so when responding to a PM. It was really frustrating because it was rather lengthy and it kept inserting in the middle of paragraphs and cutting out whole other parts.

I’m beginning to think this happens more commonly with longer text posts, as it mostly happens when I type a bunch on my iPhone. You explained it better than me - repeated text will be inserted or whole sentences may get removed at random; refreshing fixes the issue until you start typing again. This glitch keeps making me think that I made massive typos or my brain is not functioning as it should.

Yeah, I thought I was going crazy because when I was reading it to double check, I was like wait…where did..I know I typed this, and why is this here twice? I had to watch every single letter for a couple sentences just to see what happened. And sometimes if I backspaced, it reverted? It was weird. It’s not just you, so hopefully that helps. :)

I may try out the desktop version if the browser on my phone will even allow it. The built-in feature on Safari is garbage and only works on specific sites that use older website technology. I would switch to Chrome on my iPhone, but I run dual adblockers that only work with Safari and nothing else; internet ads are one of the banes of my existence.

Turns out, what I was experiencing was an iOS bug that was fixed in the latest update. I’m updating right now, and hopefully this won’t repeat itself.
