Pokémon The Pokémon Challenge Thread

Update on my Pokemon Ultra Sun Wonderlocke challenge.

A lot has happened since I last played. Feebas and Magikarp evolved, and I got a ton of new catches. I just beat the fire trial, and sadly things are still as chaotic as ever with several more deaths to add to the list. I’m going to take a break for now, and when I next play I’ll be spending some time grinding levels for my team because the grass trial is really difficult, LOL. Here’s the updated stats:

Pokemon Ultra Sun Wonderlocke

Update on my Pokemon Ultra Sun Wonderlocke challenge.

A lot happened again since the last update, including more deaths. On a good note, Kirlia evolved into a Gardevoir, Gastly evolved into a Haunter and then a Gengar, and Deerling evolved into a Sawsbuck. Sandygast, Meowstic, and Miltank all ended up dying. I just finished defeating Kahuna Olivia with no deaths, which was a lot easier than the grass trial where both Miltank and Meowstic had to be sacrificed. Next time I play I’ll be heading to Hano Grand Resort, and then the next island.

Pokemon Ultra Sun Wonderlocke

Meowstic (F), Lv. 26

Boxes:

Morelull (M), Lv. 19
Ledyba (M), Lv. 3

Welp, a Miltank with Scrappy ended up killing my Gengar with Bide, so I’m suspending the challenge indefinitely. Too many deaths and not enough team members or motivation to keep going. Until next time!

Pokemon Ultra Sun Wonderlocke: suspended indefinitely

I just started a nuzlocke of Pokémon Fire Red Advanced. It’s a rom hack of Fire Red version that replaces the Kanto dex with Pokémon from the first seven generations and buffs all of them. I attempted a nuzlocke of this game last year, but I lost against Erika (curse that Gourgeist). My current team is:

“Ground” the Sentret (level 5)
“Simpsons” the Natu (level 5)
“Mark” the Treecko (level 5)

Looks like a good team already! You’ll have to update us on it and let us know how it goes. :D

I beat Brock last night! So far I’ve had no deaths. The only reason for that is because I chose the grass starter and spent a few hours grinding. Otherwise I would’ve lost a few Pokémon by now.

I have officially decided that once Pokemon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl are released, I am going to do my first playthrough of the game as a Nuzlocke challenge in order to symbolize where I started the series, which was with Pokemon Diamond. I'll be doing this using Pokemon Brilliant Diamond. I'll use all of the expertise I've gained up to this point on challenges to make it as far as I can. If I end up losing the challenge, I'll just restart the game and go through it with a normal playthrough. I'm looking forward to trying this out once the games are released. :)

When I was younger I used to think that if I caught a Pokemon of a certain type, then the whole team should be of the same type. I mean all the in-game "boss" trainers used the same type so maybe thats why I came to that conclusion. In celebration of that I decided to have a monotype Brilliant Diamond playthrough. It's not as challenging as a Nuzlocke but its still pretty difficult because its prevents you from having a balanced team. If I get a good type like Steel I can use Dialga. If I get a type like Poison, I may find the Elite 4 pretty difficult lol. When I did competitive I completely dropped monotype teams so this will be a nostalgia trip that will be fun for me.

I've been wanting to do a Nuzlocke for quite some time now, and have made a few half-hearted attempts at one (2 or 3 Heart Gold and one on Emerald). I finally decided I'm going to actually commit to one now, and since Fire Red is the first Pokemon game I ever owned I've chosen that one for the Nuzlocke. I'm complete garbage when it comes to thinking of names so I probably won't do much of that (perhaps later if I think of any after the fact), but I will follow the rest of the main Nuzlocke rules. I'm also using the shiny clause (any shiny can be caught regardless of encounter order, doubt this will come into play), and I plan on not leveling past a gym's top level. I haven't decided on items yet (I most likely will allow them, since it's my first ever actual attempt at a Nuzlocke). Now, with all that out of the way...

I know it's not the best choice especially considering the first two gyms, but I chose Charmander as my starter simply because that was the starter I originally chose in my original run of the game. Now I just need to rely on getting lucky with my encounters later on, or that first gym will be quite the challenge...

As expected, the first battle was simple enough. Gary did miss a tackle in the battle, making me feel a little bit better about my starter choice since Charmander is the only one that starts with a 100 accuracy move. Not that it really matters all that much, but knowing my luck that 5% loss in accuracy would absolutely be the reason for an early loss!

My catches for this segment were Pidgey (Route 1), Rattata (Route 22, was really hoping for Mankey), and Caterpie (Route 2). In hindsight I should've gone for the encounter on route 2 before route 22, since Pidgey and Rattata both have a high encounter rate on 2. Dupes clause allows me to skip the pidgeys, likely into a Rattata (Weedle and Caterpie have low rates on this route). Then, dupes cuts Rattata off of route 22 leaving only Mankey (high chance) and Spearow (low chance).

Given that mistake, I've only got one real choice against Brock now. Well, I guess I have 2 choices as Charmander does get metal claw in these games, but I certainly won't rely on that for anything other than a last-ditch effort if everything else fails. I do have a plan in place for the first gym, but I'll wait until after I get there to say what it was and whether or not it worked.

Current Team:

Charmander (Lv 7)
Pidgey (Lv 3)
Rattata (Lv 3)
Caterpie (Lv 4)

So begins the grind.

@Diluc - Thank you! I've been thinking about doing this particular run for a while, and even though I've made very little progress so far I'm already having fun trying to work with Pokemon I almost never used. Best of luck with your planned BD/SP Nuzlocke too!

Carrying on with the Fire Red Nuzlocke. After a bit of level grinding, I made my way into Viridian Forest where I caught a level 3 Weedle. After grinding my Pokemon up a bit more, I proceeded through Viridian and battled each trainer for some extra exp and money. In the process I evolved both my Caterpie and Weedle into Metapod and Kakuna. At one point I almost lost my Weedle to a wild Pikachu's thundershock because I wasn't paying much attention, but survived at 2 HP and took down the Pikachu on the same turn. I also had an issue involving my Pidgey vs a trainer's Caterpie that was 1 level above mine, where I was hit with a crit that left me with 4 HP. Again, because I wasn't fully focused on the game at the time, I immediately attacked again. The second I selected the attack I immediately realized what had happened and knew I was probably going to lose it. Luck saved me here though, as even though their Caterpie outsped me, it went for a string shot instead of going for the KO with tackle, which allowed me to switch into my Charmander. Perhaps I should start paying a bit more attention... Despite my lack of focus earlier on, I managed to make it through without losing any Pokemon. Unfortunately I can't get any more encounters before Brock since Route 3 is blocked off and the area North of Viridian Forest is still Route 2.

I've still got a bit of grinding left to do before I can take on the gym. My system's battery is almost dead though and I don't have access to the charger at the moment, so I'll have to hold off on the grind for now. I should be able to challenge the first gym tomorrow though, at least if time allows for it.

Current team:

Charmander (Lv 10)
Metapod (Lv 8)
Kakuna (Lv 8)
Rattata (Lv 7)
Pidgey (Lv. 8)

New additions are bolded.

Carrying on! My first priority today was to evolve my Metapod and Kakuna into Butterfree and Beedrill, both of which are vital to my plan for the first gym. I forgot about the rival battle on Route 22, so I went back through Viridian Forest to take care of it. Along the way I trained my Rattata and Pidgey up on the wild encounters, bringing them both to level 9 and causing Pidgey to learn Gust. The battle against Gary wasn't too bad, though it reminded me just how much I hated sand attack! I led with Rattata against Gary's Pidgey, but it did enough damage to land me in crit range very quickly due to the turn one sand attack causing a missed quick attack. I couldn't risk the crit, and ended up using a potion before knocking out the Pidgey. I switched to Butterfree for his Squirtle and took it out with 3 confusions, though Gary scored another critical hit against me. Go figure!

Given that the areas before the Pewter City gym are a bit lacking when it comes to grinding, I ended up camping out in Viridian Forest to bring the rest of my team up a few levels, including bringing my Charmander, Butterfree, and Beedrill up to level 14 (the latter was incredibly tedious). I now have everything I need to attempt the gym...

This is the first time I've ever gone into the first gym actually feeling a bit nervous, aside from maybe my first ever playthrough! Out of my team, I have 4 Pokemon weak to rock. My "ace" Butterfree is 4x weak to it, and the only Pokemon not weak to rock only has normal type attacks! Luckily, only Brock's Onix has a rock type move, and that move only has 80 accuracy. That all being said, it's still super scary! I'm relying on 3 main things here: Onix's low base special defense (45) vs Butterfree's decent base special attack (80); Onix's low Attack (45) vs Butterfree's slightly higher Defense (50); and the fact that both share the same base speed. For that third part, I needed a way to guarantee that I could outspeed Onix. That's where Beedrill comes in: Being only 2x weak to rock, it has a much better chance at taking a rock tomb than Butterfree does, allowing it to get off a string shot to virtually guarantee that Butterfree outspeeds. Any remaining moves with Beedrill will be an attempt to poison. Lets see how that goes...

Turn 1, Onix goes for the bind and misses, allowing my full-health Beedrill to hit it with the string shot I needed! It's still unsafe to switch though, since that gives him a free turn to rock tomb, so I fired off a poison sting. Beedrill outsped afterward despite having way lower speed than Butterfree (meaning Butterfree would definitely outspeed Onix at this point), but Onix then landed a rock tomb which reduced my speed. I realized that I should've went for a second string shot to give me some room in the event that Butterfree ends up surviving a rock tomband having her speed reduced, allowing me to still outspeed for an additional turn. Thankfully, Onix missed his first Rock Tomb, allowing me to tank that second rock tomb. I chose string shot again in the off chance that either Onix went for the bind or that Rock Tomb missed again, but fully expecting to be KO'd. Onix went for the KO with Rock Tomb... and Rock Tomb actually missed again! That gave me two string shots and two poison stings before Beedrill was unfortunately KO'd by a Rock Tomb, but the second poison sting ended up poisoning Onix! Out comes Butterfree...

No dice there. Butterfree did around 1/2 damage, possibly a bit more, but was then one-shot by Rock Tomb. I should've seen that one coming a mile away, but for now I'm just going to stall it a little to get in some extra poison damage. I'll chip away a bit of damage before resorting to Charmander to Metal Claw it. It's still too high in health with way too high defense to risk losing one of the only Pokemon that could salvage an otherwise broken Nuzlocke. Rattata comes out and quick attacks it doing next to no damage (160 base defense is nothing to scoff at!), but poison pulls Onix down to red. Onix also missed yet another rock tomb here giving me another full-health turn. Ratatta can tank a rock tomb (maybe not a crit), and poison damage should finish Onix off here. Another quick attack, followed by a rock tomb dealing 15 of my 26 health in damage. But, poison takes Onix down to 1 HP, so one quick attack later...

Boulder Badge Obtained!

It wasn't a pretty fight, but I knew it wouldn't be either. My plan relied too much on Butterfree being able to tank a hit even with a 4x weakness when it should've been quite obvious that it couldn't happen. My contingency plan relied entirely on luck, and I was given even more luck than I could've possibly expected with all of the missed rock tombs (it's an 80 accuracy move, so it shouldn't have missed nearly as much as it did) and getting the poison in the final poison sting (okay, it's a 30% chance each turn so not that unexpected). I've really got to start pulling it together though, there's no way luck can hold out as long as it did. And regardless of all the luck I did have, I still ended up losing two great team members in Butterfree and Beedrill. Butterfree is an especially unfortunate loss, as having a psychic attack that early on would be incredibly useful, especially considering all of the Zubats and other poison types I'm going to be encountering in the near future. I'll still carry on though! I've certainly got my work cut out for me...

Onto Route 3! The trainers here were simple, for the most part. The only one to give me issue was the one with the level 14 Spearow. Naturally, their Fury Attack ends up hitting Charmander 4 times with one being a crit, leaving me in range of being hit 3 times, or 2 if one crit. However, my first ember did just enough to ensure a KO regardless of whether I got a high roll or low roll on the attack. The KO gained me a level, now I'm just one level away from evolution! Pidgey and Rattata were also leveled a couple of times against the trainers, with Pidgey finally getting Quick Attack. My catch for this route ended up being a Spearow. I was hoping for a Nidoran, but I can make this one work too. I also bought the Magikarp from the Pokemon Center on Route 4, and in Mount Moon I caught a Zubat. Unfortunately time does not allow me to begin my journey through Mount Moon at the moment, though I hope to be able to do so either tomorrow or Thursday.

Mount Moon... Most of my team is underleveled, so I wanted to spend a little time here bringing the lower level ones up to the rest of my team. It was while I was grinding that I realized that my team still had one absolutely massive flaw: Rock Types. Half of my team is weak to it (better than 4/5 like it was for Brock though!), and I have only one attack across all of my team members that isn't "not very effective," which is Metal Claw on a fire type that is weak to rock. Add in the fact that I don't have any available encounters until after Nugget Bridge North of Cerulean (Route 4's encounter was taken up by the Magikarp I bought) means that this will be a bit of a challenge to get through, especially if it turns out the hiker near the end of the first floor can't be avoided (unless he doesn't have any rock or ground type moves, then Charmander can deal with him well enough).

Early into the grind, Charmander leveled up and evolved into Charmeleon, so now I can breathe a little easier. I'll try to avoid using him too much to avoid leveling past the next gym, as I plan to go through Nugget Bridge before the gym to grab an encounter on Route 24 (I may pass on 25 until after the gym due to the extra trainers). As I've gone through I've done a bit of switch training to bring my lower level Pokemon closer to the rest of the team's level. The hiker on the first floor turned out to be avoidable (he just walks around and leaves a ton of space to get around him), so for now I'm just going to leave him.

The first Rocket Grunt battle on the second floor of the main path helped to justify my disdain for attacks with less than 100 accuracy. He led off with his Lv 13 Rattata, which happened to be pitted against my own Lv 13 Rattata. I went for the Hyper Fang, which has 90 accuracy, and missed! Of course, he retaliated with his own Hyper Fang which ended up hitting and dealing 24 of my 33 health in damage without a crit. I swapped into Charmeleon to avoid certain death, and was hit by another hyper fang as well as a quick attack which brought my HP to 22/46 before an ember and a scratch took it out. His next Pokemon was Sandshrew, also Lv 13. I swapped to Spearow for Exp, then switched in Pidgey to finish it off. It was bulkier than I expected and kept spamming defense curls, but quick attack spam from my end was able to take it down. That battle definitely required a backtrack to the Pokemon Center afterward... That and a bit more grinding at the Mount Moon entrance. Over the next couple of days I plan on bringing my team up a few more levels, especially the lower level ones, and getting through to Cerulean at the very least.

Cerulean City! I'm finally here, and I'm a bit underlevelled for what the area has to offer. I ended up spending a lot of my time grinding up in the single patch of grass available to me West of Cerulean City. I brought most of my team up a few levels in preparation for the battle with Gary and the Nugget Bridge battles afterward. My biggest priority here is to get myself to the grass patch on Route 24 to get myself another encounter, and that requires a lot of trainer battles to reach!

The battle with Gary actually wasn't too bad at all. He starts with Pidgeotto, so I led off against it with Charmeleon. Pidgeotto led off with a sand attack after taking an ember, then began spamming quick attacks. Naturally, a single sand attack caused the next ember to miss but I was able to land 2 more to take him down. His next Pokemon was his Lv 18 Squirtle, so I swapped to Raticate. Of course the 90 accuracy Hyper Fang misses the first turn, allowing him to raise his defense with Withdraw. The second hyper fang brought him to half, but the next rolled low allowing him to get a single tackle in (why did he even use tackle anyway?) before quick attack finished him off. His Abra only knows teleport, so I used the opportunity to get some extra exp on Zubat. His final Pokemon was Rattata at Lv 15, so I brought out Pidgeotto which was able to take him down with 2 quick attacks.

My next stop after this was Route 24's single patch of grass for another encounter. Dupes blocks off all but 2 possible grass encounters here: Oddish (25% rate), which I would love to have for the Cerulean Gym and for Gary's soon to be Wartortle and Blastoise, or Abra (15%). Abra would also be nice, but since I only have regular Pokeballs and Abra only knows teleport I only have a single very low chance of actually getting it which would be a wasted encounter. To get to the grass though, I have to go through Nugget Bridge. None of the trainers there are particularly tough, though the last two trainers aren't exactly pushovers. The first trainer is a bug catcher with low levels, so I use the opportunity to train up my flying types a bit more. I brought out Zubat against the Metapod and started spamming astonish, which ended up getting 4 flinches in a row. Meanwhile, 9 astonishes flinched Kakuna only once. Beyond that, nothing really eventful happened that fight. The rest of the fights were uneventful as well. I collected my nugget, took out the Rocket Grunt, and moved on to the grass at Route 24 which gave me Abra as my encounter, which was a wasted encounter as predicted due to teleport. Thankfully, the grass on Route 25 doesn't require any trainer encounters to access, so I went that way for another encounter... and immediately encountered another Abra which also failed. Two wasted encounters out of two possible at the moment, beautiful. This next gym just got a lot more interesting...

To give myself the best chance at beating the gym with as few losses as possible, I'll be heading back up to Route 25 to train my team up a little bit more, as well as evolving my Magikarp to Gyarados. This will take a while... next stop, Cerulean Gym!

To the Cerulean Gym! After a ton of time spent slowly grinding my team up on Route 25, I am finally at the point where I think I might be able to take on the gym. Training on that route was extremely tedious, as with 4 of my team members being super close to the gym's top level Pokemon I could only switch train my Magikarp with Zubat to avoid potential overleveling, and switch training on Route 25's Pokemon is incredibly slow. Then, to add a bit of insult to injury it turns out that the most efficient pokemon for me to train on was Oddish, one of two Pokemon I could catch on this route that refused to show up until now! Once Magikarp reached level 15 I could train it up slightly faster as it had tackle and enough speed and defense to take on wild Caterpie, Metapod, and Kakuna on its own. Wild Pidgey were annoying, but I decided to switch train Magikarp on them using my higher-level Pokemon since they'd have an easier time than Zubat of taking him down.

In the end, I was able to get Magikarp to level 19, at which point I gave him a rare candy to evolve him into Gyarados. I couldn't evolve my Zubat, since while it evolves at level 22, the highest level in the gym is level 21. If I could evolve it, I'd be able to use bite against the Starmie thanks to its psychic type, but Zubat's stats are way too low for that. However, and I had forgotten about this until it happened, when Magikarp evolves into Gyarados at level 20, it learns bite. That right there is a game changer, and the gym suddenly seems much less scary. Now I have a Pokemon that can easily tank Starmie's Water Pulses (at least until it ends up confused) and other attacks, while being able to deliver some good damage with bite (and hopefully land some flinches). I thought his lower special attack might be a problem given that dark type attacks are all special in generation 3, but his special attack is still a respectable 40 vs 49 regular attack, and bite has 100 accuracy compared to the physical tackle's 95 which WILL miss here, I can guarantee it. Plus the whole super effective thing against Starmie. To battle!

First off, can we talk about that gym battle music? All these years later and it's still just as awesome as it was the first time I heard it, they really did a great job reimagining this track for these remakes. Anyway...

Misty leads off with Staryu (Lv 18), so I started with Raticate. I know I keep bringing up how much I dislike moves with less than 100 accuracy, but I still chose to start with hyper fang due to STAB bringing its power to 120 which I feel is a fair tradeoff for the battle. Somewhat surprisingly, the hyper fang hits, and as expected it instantly takes down the Staryu. I was never really all that nervous about that one though, it's always been a fairly easy first Pokemon. The Starmie, however, is a different story. She sends it out and I swap to Gyarados. It outspeeds and fires off a water pulse, dealing 10 damage out of 72. I fire back with bite, doing a little over half in super effective damage. Instead of going for the potential confusion with a second water pulse to give itself a better chance of survival (I had a berry on Gyarados for that possibility though!), Starmie goes with Swift (9 damage), allowing a second bite to finish Starmie off.

Cascade Badge Obtained!

Wow, I've always dreaded that Staryu in every playthrough I've ever done, but that time the gym was a walk in the park. Gyarados made that gym too easy! The grind was long and tedious, but the end result was definitely worth it. Gyarados is definitely a keeper.

Inspired by @skweegee ’s Fire Red Nuzlocke challenge, I purchased Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee yesterday because I’ve never played the Let’s Go games, and started a Nuzlocke challenge on it!

For this challenge, I have decided to ban gifted Pokemon and Alolan forms, but move tutors are not banned. As for catching the first Pokemon in each route, since they appear in the overworld, whenever I get to a new area I have to close my eyes and move around until I run into a Pokemon, and that counts as the first encounter. A Pokemon fainting having to be released is still a rule as well.

I chose Eevee as my starter, which ended up being a female, so I nicknamed it Lavender. I decided I’m going to use candle scents as the nickname theme for this playthrough. Ventured onto route 1 and caught a first encounter Bellsprout, which I nicknamed Ivy. Then I caught a first encounter Metapod in Viridian Forest, which I nicknamed Honey. Made it to Pewter City and took on Brock while being underleveled, because being unable to catch more than one Pokemon in an area really makes the game more challenging experience-wise. My plan initially was to lead with Ivy and use Growth three times, and then go to town on his team with Vine Whip. That didn’t end up working out, however…

I took out his Geodude easily enough, but when it came time for his Onix, Ivy wasn’t up to the task of defeating it. I managed to get it to under half health while avoiding a Rock Throw, but the second Rock Throw hit and Ivy fainted. RIP Ivy. I changed into Lavender, which I honestly should have done more quickly to keep Ivy from dying. Managed to finish off Brock’s Onix and win the Boulder Badge.

From there I went onto route three and caught a first encounter Spearow, which I nicknamed Pumpkin. Made it to Mt. Moon and caught a first encounter Zubat, which I nicknamed Vampire (yes, Vampire is an actual candle scent. Look it up if you don’t believe me). Made it to Cerulean City, and then went north to Bill’s house. I caught a first encounter Meowth on route 25, which I nicknamed Vanilla. After making it back to Cerulean City, I challenged Misty’s gym.

Since move tutors aren’t banned in the game, having Lavender know Buzzy Buzz proved to be extremely useful. I basically one-shot or two-shot all of the gym’s Pokemon, including Misty’s, which earned me the Cascade Badge.

Up next I’ll be heading towards Vermilion City, site of the third Kanto gym badge. Lt. Surge is going to be extremely tough and perhaps a challenge breaker unless I find a ground type somewhere, so hopefully I’m able to.

Current Team:

Lavender the Eevee (F), Lv. 18
Honey the Butterfree (F), Lv. 14
Vanilla the Meowth (F), Lv. 14
Vampire the Zubat (M), Lv. 12
Pumpkin the Spearow (M), Lv. 12

Deaths:

Ivy the Bellsprout (F), Lv. 7

2/8 gym badges obtained.

Update on my Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee Nuzlocke challenge!

I ventured onto route 5 and caught a first encounter Vulpix, a Pokemon that will surely be useful against the grass gym later on. Ended up nicknaming it Firewood. From there I made it to route 6 and caught a first encounter Rattata, which I nicknamed Butterscotch. Made it to Vermilion City and boarded the S.S. Anne. Unfortunately while on board, my rival, Gary (yes, I nicknamed him Gary), took out Vanilla in our battle. When I returned to the city, I ventured onto route 11 and caught a first encounter Pidgey, which I nicknamed Candy Cane.

I caught a first encounter Diglett in Diglett’s Cave, and nicknamed it Pine Tree, but unfortunately it succumbed to a Voltorb’s Self-Destruct.

Gave Candy Cane a Rare Candy (heh, the pun) and it evolved into a Pidgeotto. I then took on Lt. Surge’s gym with the intention of winning while being underleveled, and I did, thanks to Lavender. Lavender was taught Dig before the battle started. I easily took out his first two Pokemon. His Raichu proved to be too powerful, but thankfully I one-shot it with a critical hit Dig. I earned the Thunder Badge with no casualties.

Up next I’ll be heading towards Celadon City, site of the fourth Kanto gym badge.

Well, everyone ended up dying because of some Gamer trainers with Pokemon that have OHKO moves. RIP.

I’ll attempt another Nuzlocke challenge once BDSP are out.
