Pokémon The Pokémon Challenge Thread

As far as I’m concerned, if Zorua is the first Pokemon you encounter in that city/place, then you can use it (even if it’s a gift Pokemon). That’s the way I’ve always done it whenever playing the fifth generation of games.

Hope this helps both of you! :)

Thanks for the advice~ I think I'd def use him if I lose any of my main pokemon like Yippers or Tagteam who have dark moves. I think the only problem is that you can't name it. Or that it doesn't even have a nickname to begin with.

For Clay, would using the an air balloon item be the right stregtegy since if faster, his uses his most trusted bulldowser move?

Yeah, I’d definitely use the Air Balloon item, especially if there’s a Pokemon who is weak to ground type moves that you’re trying to protect. Just make sure you don’t equip it to the Pokemon until you’re about to face him (there’s a chance that any other trainer may hit the Pokemon and get rid of the item before you can use it against Clay).

Ah I see~
I had planned to use my grass types Ubon and Cottonee, and who knows what I find in the grasses in the new route? For Clay's first two pokemon, and using my fighting type Yolo for his last pokemon, might even see if I can get Yolo to learn a fire punch or something from the tutors?

I'm kinda new on using items like these on the pokemon really, so wanted to try it out~

Yes, those are the main rules to follow. If a Pokemon faints it is considered dead and must be released, and you can only catch the first Pokemon you encounter in an area (route/place/city). There’s a plethora of other rules and optional rules, and there are also different rules for different challenges, but those two are the main ones that need to be followed for something like this.

Hope this helps both of you! :)

@Midoriya It was super helpful, thank you! I'm 3 badges into my first ever nuzlocke challenge, playing in Firered. I've been able to avoid losing any Pokemon so far, although I have had a couple close calls. I was training Diglett up before battling Lt. Surge, and encountered a wild Dugtrio with Arena Trap... my Diglet got down to 7 HP but somehow survived. Then vs. Surge's Raichu, Charmeleon also got down to 7 HP, but with the help of 3 or 4 super potions was able to finish off the job.

The most difficult part has been only being able to catch the first Pokemon from each route... I've caught 3 Pidgeys and 3 Rattatas... not being able to catch Oddish made me have to grind so much before facing Misty, and a Geodude would have made Surge's Raichu much easier.

3 badges in, I'm enjoying the nuzlocke challenge... it makes you get creative and use Pokemon you wouldn't otherwise... let's see if I can finish the run! :)

Update on my Pokemon Shield Surpriselocke.

Made it to Turffield City and faced off against Milo. Thankfully I was able to defeat him easily with the help of both Tranquill and Dartrix. I managed to catch a first encounter Pumpkaboo on route four, which I surprise traded away for a Pidove (which is how I got Tranquill before facing Milo). When I next play I’ll be heading towards Hulbury City, site of the second Galar gym badge.

Update on my Pokemon Shield Surpriselocke.

Made it to Hulbury City and took on Nessa’s gym. On the way there I encountered a first encounter Minccino on route five and surprise traded it away for a level 29 Wooloo. Replaced Tranquill on my team with it as Dartrix/Decidueye can already use flying type moves. While I was facing one of the trainers in Nessa’s gym, Tympole evolved into a Palpitoad and Pichu evolved into a Pikachu. I used this to my advantage when facing Nessa and defeated her Goldeen with my Pikachu, her Arrokuda with my Dartrix, and her Drednaw with my Palpitoad (Max Quake plus the typing really came in handy). When I next play I’ll be heading through the next area and back around to Motostoke City, site of the third Galar gym badge.

Black 2 Fifth Gym: The Clay Disaster

Pokemon:
Servine (Ubon) LV 30 (Big root)
Castform (Noelani) LV 31 (Mystic water)
Cottonee (Whisper) LV 30 (Miracle seed) (God I need a miracle~)
Gurdurr (Yolo) LV 30 (Air balloon)
Deerling (Monroe) LV 30 (Leftovers)
Herdier (Jimmy) LV 27 (amult coin) (Yeah, Yippers sadly fainted to a poke mushroom...)

I know I'm under leveled, but all the trainers in the gym weren't enough~ I added a fire punch to Yolo.

Ubon went against his Krokorok, Decided to growth due to it;s initemidate and it worried me with its dulldoze but it didn't hurt Ubon at all. Ubon got hurt from it's crunch so mega drain all the way.
Luckily Clay uses his super potion on this guy, which is perfect. I continues to mega drain it till it fainted.

Whisper against Sandslash. He tried to kill me with grip claw but only had to giga drain twice. OH BOI here he comes!

Yolo against the dreaded Excadrill...Interestingly doesn't use dulldoze, so air balloon was wasted, but got him half HP from fire punch. He strangely goes easy on me and uses slash again, to which I killed him with fire punch!

Oh wow, so I didn't even need to use Castform or have any pokemon get killed in gym..Dunno why my pokemon keep dying in training DX

Update on my Pokemon Shield Surpriselocke.

Went inside Galar Mine No. 2 and caught a first encounter Shellos, which I surprise traded away for a Sizzlipede. I then replaced Dubwool in my party with it. From there I faced Bede in battle and defeated him, though there were definitely some close calls. Made it through the rest of the mine and to the Motostoke Outskirts. Decided not to catch anything here, actually, because my team still isn’t very strong and I didn’t want to risk a party member dying (and I also don’t think I need anymore box Pokemon at the moment). Made it back to Motostoke City and took on Kabu’s gym. I used Palpitoad in battle to take out Kabu’s Ninetales and Arcanine, and then, since Palpitoad was getting low on health, used my newly evolved Centiskorch against his Centiskorch and won the battle. Machop also evolved all the way into a Machamp during this time (with the help of a friend), and I used a Thunderstone on my Pikachu to evolve it into a Raichu. I can tell if I keep playing the challenge my team is going to get even stronger. It seems like a team Ghetsis might use to be honest, xD. Up next I’ll be heading through the wild area again and to Hammerlocke City. From there I’ll head to Stow-On-Side, site of the fourth Galar gym badge.

Update on my Pokemon Shield Surpriselocke.

Went through the wild area and made it to Hammerlocke City. Decided to not catch anything else to surprise trade away from the wild area, but looking back on it now I probably should have. Ventured through route six and made it to Stow-on-Side, where I battled and easily defeated Hop. During this time, Dartrix evolved into a Decidueye, Palpitoad evolved into a Seismitoad, and Axew evolved into a Fraxure. I then took on Allister’s gym. Once I got to Allister, I took out his first couple Pokemon easily with Decidueye and Spirit Shackle. I then switched to Fraxure for his G-Max Gengar, and dynamaxed my Fraxure as well. Unfortunately, while I was healing Fraxure after having done damage to G-Max Gengar, G-Max Gengar got a critical hit and Fraxure fainted. The first death of the challenge. I switched into Decidueye who was still at full health, and somehow Decidueye tanked a G-Max Phantasm from G-Max Gengar to survive in the red and took out the enemy with a final Spirit Shackle. I have to say I’m surprised and happy that I didn’t lose Decidueye as well, but losing Fraxure before it could even become a Haxorus is a major loss. I decided to sub in Dubwool from my boxes for now to keep the typing of all my Pokemon different. Up next I’ll be heading to Ballonlea City, site of the fifth Galar gym badge.

Update on my Pokemon Shield Surpriselocke.

Took care of Bede and steamrolled his team with my Centiskorch. After that I went into the Glimwood Tangle and caught a first encounter Shiinotic, which I surprise traded away for a Charmander. Continued to battle opponents and Charmander evolved into a Charmeleon. Made it to Ballonlea City and took on the gym. It was pretty easy all things considered and I took out Opal’s team using a combination of Raichu, Seismitoad, and Decidueye. I then returned to Hammerlocke City and went east. After the cutscenes I made it to route seven and defeated Hop’s team again easily. Up next I’ll be heading towards Circhester City, site of the sixth Galar gym badge.

Here's my Firered Nuzlocke Challenge update...

I cruised through my 4th badge from Erika and then the Rocket hideout in Celdaon. I was thinking "I thought the Nuzlocke challenge would actually be challenging".... and then stupidly let my guard down.

Digdug (Dugtrio) was shaping up to be my 2nd strongest Pokemon after Firetail (Charizard). Dig and Magnitude with a solid attack and excellent speed could take down a variety of opponents... that is until some random trainer with a Koffing self-destructed and one hit KO'd my Dugtrio. Not good.

Since I now had the Silph Scope I backtracked to Lavender to catch a Gastly. I was thinking "lose my Dugtrio, gain a Gastly or Haunter, I can work with this". And then proceeded to catch Spooky (a level 15 Gastly). I needed to train Gastly so had him in the 1st slot to swap out during trainer battles to gain experience... I was only half paying attention so I'm not exactly sure what happened, but I thought I switched out Gastly but the opponent somehow got an attack in and one hit KO'd Gastly.

I accidentally KO'd the first Snorlax I encountered, but luckily caught the second one. So now my team is a super overpowered Charizard, Snorlax, Pidgeotto, Butterfree and Beedrill. I'm in serious need of type coverage. I'm thinking of evolving Eevee into Jolteon and using my one catch chance on some upcoming routes to catch a decent water Pokemon.

Now I'm off to Saffron to pick up one of either Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan then hope Charizard and Snorlax can take down Sabrina.

Update on my Pokemon Shield Surpriselocke.

Made it through routes seven and eight while my team got stronger. Charmeleon evolved into a mighty Charizard, which would come in handy for the sixth gym. I then made it to Circhester City and took down all of the opponents in the gym using Charizard. Faced Melony in battle and took out her first three Pokemon using Charizard. Finally, I switched to Machamp for her Lapras (because of its water moves), and defeated it. Up next I’ll be heading towards Spikemuth, site of the seventh Galar gym badge.

Update on my Pokemon Shield Surpriselocke.

Defeated Hop easily in Circhester City and went through route nine, defeating all the trainers there. Beat Marnie again and then took on the Spikemuth gym. Easily defeated Piers by switching out a lot. Up next I’ll be heading back towards Hammerlocke City, site of the eighth and final Galar gym badge.

A quick but slightly painful update on my Firered Nuzlocke challenge...

I defeated Blaine and Giovanni for my final 2 badges. Firetail (Charizard) was leading the team, with decent support from Punchbowl (Hitmonchan), Nightmist (Lapras) and Bigtummy (Snorlax). So after defeating Giovanni my thought was "time to grind Victory Road to level up Hitmonchan and Lapras, should be fairly easy."

Until I ran into Gary right after leaving Viridian. His Alakazam got a couple Calm Minds in and took out Snorlax. Blastoise took a bit of wearing down, but otherwise it wasn't too difficult of a battle... but I'm starting to get worried about the Elite 4 now. 1st I was without Dugtrio, then Haunter(Gastly), and now Snorlax. There are only a few routes/areas in the game that I'm still allowed to catch a Pokemon... this isn't looking great.

Originally I was planning on no Legendaries for this challenge, but I think I'm toast if I don't at least grab one of the birds. I need to to think about it but I might go for Zapdos or Articuno.

Just started my galarian nuzlock I just made it to the point where I can go to the wild area my team is small but I just started it’s grooky zigzagoon and one more but I forgot it’s name it’s a fox I’m new to nuzlocking I started a Pokémon black one but I didn’t finish but I’m excited for this challenge and I hope I’ll win I’ll be posting more about my nuzlock

Nothing too exciting to update in my Firered Nuzlocke challenge, but have made a little bit of progress.

After my last post I was down to essentially a 3-Pokemon team: Firetail (Charizard), Nightmist (Lapras), and Punchbowl (Hitmonchan).

I decided against catching one of the Legendary birds to make this run more challenging, so there would be no Zapdos to bail me out this time.

I caught a Psyduck (Quackers) on the way to Victory Road. I spent some time grinding to level up Quackers, and he's nearly ready for some real battles.

I also realized that my Rattata that's been sitting in my box since very early on was actually going to be useful. So Mousetrap (Raticate) now has Cut and Strength, and just recently learned Thief from TM. I used Thief to steal a Twisted Spoon from a wild Abra to give to Quackers. I might swing by the seafoam islands to grab a Nevermeltice for Lapras.

I just began working my way through Victory Road, and was able to catch a relatively high level Onix (Rocky). He'll probably end up making the cut for my Elite 4 team, mostly because I don't have many other good options at this point. Time to grind and level up the team, and then onto the Elite 4! Wish me luck, I might need it :)

I did several Randomizer Nuzlockes and something recurring is that Cacturne seems to be popping up XD

In my Black 2 run cobalion was swapped with Cacturne (he died a bit later unfortunately) and in my Heartgold run i got THREE Cacturnes by way of evolving some other 'mons....

So i guess Cacturne is my spirit animal now lol

I just started shield up got to the wild area and well two of my first encounters killed one Pokémon and it just got worse I ended up with one Pokémon left so I restarted my nuzlock oof I should have leveled my Pokémon higher up

One final update from my Firered challenge....

Mission complete, but it was tough! I thought that Firetail (Charizard), Punchbowl (Hitmonchan) and Nightmist (Lapras) were going to need more help to beat the Elite 4, but I was wrong.

Hitmonchan took care of most of Lorelei's team. The battle vs Bruno was going smoothly until I brought out Quackers (Golduck) to use Confusion on Hitmonchan. Bruno's Hitmonchan "beat me to the punch" and took out Quackers in 2 turns. With Rocky (Onix) and Brownwing (Pidgeot) not strong enough to put up much of a fight vs the Elite 4, I was left with a 3 Pokemon team for the final 3 battles.

I was a little worried about Agatha's Gengar's, but Firetail took care of them without much trouble. Nightmist was the MVP (most valuable Pokemon ) vs. Lance, one-shotting both Dragonairs and Dragonite, though Dragonite did get an attack in before I could attack that brought Lapras to under 100 HP.

Gary's Blastoise was difficult, as expected. A combination of Confuse Rays and Body Slams (to paralyze) from Nightmist followed by a couple Thunderpunches from Punchbowl took down Blastoise. Besides Arcanine the rest of the battle wasn't too tough. Ice Beam on Pidgeot, and Firetail's Flamethrower and Wing Attack on Exeggutor and Alakazam.

This was my 1st Nuzlocke challenge and I really enjoyed it! I'm sure I'll do another one at some point. It made the game significantly more difficult than a normal play-through.

Final Results:

Team that defeated the Elite 4 (that survived): Firetail (Charizard), Nightmist (Lapras), Punchbowl (Hitmonchan); plus 2 party members that didn't battle the Elite 4: Brownwing (Pidgeot), Rocky (Onix)

Pokemon lost along the way: Digdug the Dugtrio, Spooky the Gastly, Shocka the Voltorb, Bigtummy the Snorlax, and Quackers the Golduck

Some shoutouts to other Pokemon that helped along the way: Bugsy the Butterfree and Stinger the Beedrill for early battles, Mousetrap the Raticate for HMs and stealing wild Pokemon items, and Leafpod the Vileplume for making it a little easier to catch wild Pokemon.
