Pokémon The Pokémon Challenge Thread

I started up a Pokemon Alpha Sapphire Wonderlocke challenge, and it has been going pretty well so far. Just got my first gym badge. Here's my current team.

Trainer: Riley

Gym badges: 1

Pokemon:

Deku the Grovyle (M), Lv. 17
Vivillon (M), Lv. 13
Flabebe (F), Lv. 10
Magikarp (M), Lv. 10
Bunnelby (F), Lv. 9

Boxes: N/A

Deaths: N/A

As you can see, I've acquired some rare Pokemon from wonder trade in this game, which will be helpful against the gym leaders going forward. Up next I'll be heading to Dewford Town, site of the second Hoenn gym badge! :D

Been making some good progress on my Pokemon Alpha Sapphire Wonderlocke, and I just got my third gym badge. Losing Bunnelby was a shock, but thankfully my most recent trade netted me a Gible within the level limit, and I evolved it into a Gabite. It easily destroyed Wattson's team, lol. When I next play I'll be heading towards Lavaridge Town, site of the fourth Hoenn gym badge! :D

Made a ton of progress on my Pokemon Alpha Sapphire Wonderlocke since my last update, and my team went through some evolutions. I also got a ton of new captures for wonder trades and have reserves in case anyone on my team should faint, so I'm well set for what's to come. When I next play I'll be heading to Mossdeep City, site of the seventh Hoenn gym badge! :D

Made a lot of progress since the last update on my Pokemon Alpha Sapphire Wonderlocke and explored all the water routes in eastern Hoenn, and then finally got my seventh gym badge. I've elected not to wonder trade anymore as to handicap myself from getting new reserve Pokemon, especially since my team is already on par with Hoenn's E4 now. When I next play I'll be heading to face and defeat Team Aqua once and for all, and then to Sootopolis City to take on Wallace for the final Hoenn gym badge. Then I'll head for the E4 and champion! :D

I think it's pretty obvious by the above picture that I did it! I made it all the way to the Pokemon League in my Pokemon Alpha Sapphire Wonderlocke, and beat the E4 and Champion Steven as well. The last play of the game was his Mega Metagross being unable to take out my Mega Gyarados in one hit, so I finished him off with Crunch while he had to recharge. :D

It's safe to say that by now I've mastered the art of Pokemon Nuzlockes and Wonderlockes. I will be doing a Pokemon challenge in Pokemon Violet, but that won't be for awhile since I want to take the chance to play through Pokemon Scarlet first. Until next time. See ya!

Finally back on my Fire Red Nuzlocke after way too long!

Looking back at my last post I already see something I could've definitely done better at the Vermilion Gym. Starting Gyarados against Raichu for the intimidate and baiting an electric attack on a switch to Diglett was a good idea, but only after the battle did I realize that it would've been far safer to have switched back and forth between Diglett and Gyarados to get multiple intimidates off. That way, I really wouldn't have had anything to worry about from Raichu aside from crits, since it would've been dealing very little damage per attack. But as always, hindsight is 20/20 and there is no point in dwelling on it any further. Moving on!

With the Vermilion Gym done and Rock Tunnel looming ahead, I made my way through the Diglett Cave to get Flash (which I now realize is probably pointless, since Rock Tunnel can be navigated without it which would save a move slot on one of my Pokemon). On the return trip from the Pewter side of the cave, I ended up running into a level 31 Dugtrio which could do a ton of damage to my Pokemon due to its speed, attack, and magnitude spam combined with its Arena Trap ability which blocks switching or running. Thankfully, to counter this I had brought my Raticate with the ability Run Away and had it lead the party, so I was able to escape without issue.

My main goal for this section was to get my Pokemon up to at least level 25 before entering Rock Tunnel. The Celadon Gym leader's highest level Pokemon are both 29, so it gave me a lot of room to work with since I'm not allowing myself to level beyond the upcoming gym's highest level. Since I was heading to Rock Tunnel anyway, I decided to train my team up on Route 9 and 10. Because I'm running Dupes Clause, Route 9 holds no possible encounters for me. But with the trainer battles and the patch of grass on this route, I was finally able to get my Spearow to level 25 where it learned Aerial Ace. And, since it finally learned the move, I was also able to let it evolve into Fearow which is a nice boost to my team. Plus, it's nice to also have an attack that is guaranteed to land since it means I won't have to worry as much about evasion spam from opponents anymore. I also ground an extra level for Diglett beyond the goal of 25, which allowed him to evolve into Dugtrio.

Unlike Route 9, Route 10 did offer a single new encounter, Voltorb, which I added to my collection. Since I also had access to Rock Tunnel, I decided to grab my encounter there as well, which ended up being Machop. The presence of the Pokemon Center so close to two viable training locations helped to speed up the grind a bit here, and I was able to reach my goal of level 25 for each of my Pokemon. My goal for the next segment is Rock Tunnel and a bit more grinding before taking on the Celadon gym.

Into Rock Tunnel!

Before I began my trek through the darkness of Rock Tunnel (I decided not to use flash), I chose to grind 4 more of my Pokemon to level 25 (Arbok, Voltorb, Golbat, and Machop) to keep them on par with the rest of my team, as a contingency or in case I needed to switch out for any reason. My Golbat tried to evolve to Crobat multiple times, but unfortunately its evolution is automatically canceled until you get the National Dex. With the grind done, I finally make my way into Rock Tunnel toward Lavender Town.

For this section I brought Machop in place of Raticate, which worked out well for a few of the trainers deep within that have an assortment of normal types. Gloom certainly pulled his weight in here as well with the large amount of rock and water type Pokemon being used by the trainers scattered throughout, and I had to stop using him since he was starting to approach the level cap for this segment (level 29 until completing the Celadon gym) and start using Gyarados instead. I did end up with a little extra exp on Gloom at the end of the tunnel though, when an opponent's Pidgey whirlwinded Charmeleon into Gloom (who took out Pidgey with Acid since Pidgey's HP was low already anyway).

The biggest thing that scared me was the sheer number of trainers that potentially have self destruct on their Geodudes and Gravelers, an attack that would ohko two of the Pokemon I had that were strong against them (Machop and Gloom), and one that would be ohko'd by a crit (Gyarados) and severely damaged even without a crit. Gloom was strong enough to handle the geodudes, but even after running the calculations I was still nervous facing off against the Gravelers even with Gyarados. Thankfully, the calculations held true (there really was no reason to think otherwise, it was just yet another case of me being massively overcautious) and Gyarados easily disposed of them with Water Pulse. I ended up making it out of Rock Tunnel without issue, and after wasting a persim berry on a Slowpoke that confused two Pokemon in a row (I forgot Gyarados was still holding one from Gym 2) I headed South into Lavender Town.

I think I'm going to call it here for now, and will try to take on the Celadon Gym later.

Just a lil' update on my White/black 2 nuzlocke, I went back recently and started training my pokemon (I forgot how useful Audino was) so I am hoping soon, I'll be facing the Dragon gym and carry on with the game despite feeling a lil distant with the game because of how long I've left it.

Alllllsoooo, I dunno why this keeps happening to me while training, but sadly my Jellicent called Terubosu died while training when we encoutnered Leavanny instead of Audino, and I knew in my gut I should've swapped out but I didn't and she's gone now ;_: Died at Lv 48 (I was trying to train all my pokemon to be that level, got half of them to it, Noelani is 49 though cause she is beast.)

I also wish I made a note of any pokemon I accidentally killed in a new area or couldn't battle, so I know what areas I can still return back to and grab another Pokemon.
Really not looking forward for the dragon gym, but Noelani, and Pineapple should be somewhat helpful throughout the trainers and Pokemon.

Just a short update, BUT I have officially started my Pokemon Violet Surpriselocke and already have around 7 badges in total. This isn't just any surpriselocke, however, it's a surpriselocke with special rules. Those being,

1. If a Pokemon faints it is considered dead, like normal challenges.
2. I can only get a MAX of 21 Pokemon to use in the playthrough. My starter, two initial encounters, and then 18 Pokemon, one for every badge I earn in the game. After I earn a badge I can catch any first Pokemon I encounter and surprise trade them away.

Since I've won 4-5 Nuzlocke/Wonderlocke challenges in a row, I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to push my Pokemon strategizing to its limits. Now, come, and watch as I go for the epic conclusion to my challenge spree!! Will I be successful, or will my streak finally be broken? Stay tuned for more!

I got rid of my last Surpriselocke when I encountered a shiny, so rip to that, lol.

HOWEVER, a week or two ago I purchased a legitimate copy of Pokemon White, and it arrived a few days later. I've started up a Nuzlocke challenge on it, and my second attempt has been going really well so far. Generation five is the ONLY generation of Pokemon I haven't beat a challenge on (if you don't include 9), so if I can win this I can officially declare myself a Pokemon Nuzlocke/Wonderlocke master.

I continued on my journeys in my Pokemon White Nuzlocke and earned my 7th and 8th gym badges without losing anyone. The 7th gym was pretty easy, but the 8th gym I was dreading.

Funny thing is, the 8th Dragon type gym was supposed to be difficult, but my team made quick work of it. Skar the Stoutland took out a bunch of the trainers thanks to Ice Fang. Then I faced Iris in battle, and put my strategy into play. I used Yawn with TOFWALVM the Musharna and then switched to Micheal the Krookodile as Iris's Fraxure fell asleep. I then proceeded to spam Foul Play with Micheal, and once Fraxure fainted his Moxie ability activated. I OHKO'ed her Fraxure, two-shot her Druddigon, and then did a good deal of damage to her Haxorus before it used Dragon Tail. Thankfully for me, it switched me right back into Stoutland, and I finished off her Haxorus with Ice Fang for the win!! 🤩

Are there any Nuzlocke formats you would recommend? I'm tempted to try one on my AS cartridge.

Alpha Sapphire right? I'd recommend doing a Wonderlocke there since you should still be able to trade in that game. It's a lot of fun and more fun than your traditional Alpha Sapphire Nuzlocke.

There's also a lot of other challenges you can try. Whatever you end up trying, feel free to post about it here! 🥰

Maybe I'll try a combo of a normal and a Wonderlocke. I catch one pokemon per route, and I trade my team members away after every gym. Level-grinding is allowed if I receive lvl 1 monsters, and lvl 100's are reserved for possible E4 and Champion teams. As for the Delta Episode, I'll treat it as a whole separate thing, complete with 6 new catches to wt away for a new team. My champion team will be stored in a box titled Survivors, and the deaths will be stored in a box titled sad. Hackemons will be GTS'ed away for pokemon of my choosing, and those gts mons will not be used unless absolutely necessary.

Sounds great! As long as it's still challenging enough, which from the way you described it, sounds like it should be. Like I mentioned, feel free to post your progress updates here! :D

This isn't a Nuzlocke, but a challenge I like to do with a lot of replays is to use exclusively Grass Pokemon (bonus if they're all specific to that region). Extra hard mode is when they're all unevolved. So I'm currently replaying Platinum, and my team is Torterra, Roserade, Wormadam, Cherrim, Leafeon, and Carnivine. It's inconvenient to have to swap something out for a Pokemon to use Fly and Surf, but it's still fun.

Wormadam is a beast. I never would've expected that. Its movepool has really good coverage compared to others like Cherrim who really only have Grass moves. She currently has Razor Leaf, Bug Bite, Psybeam, and Protect. And she's a little tank! I just picked up Carnivine from the Great Marsh, and he's already growing on me. Cherrim seems to be the only dead weight on the team just because it's mediocre in all stats and has poor coverage. She's cute though and can really bolster the team if I use Sunny Day for a longer battle.

Most definitely still a challenge to be honest. Those would be called monolockes, and plenty of people do them even though using the same type can give you an unfair advantage against some gyms and an unfair disadvantage against others.

I love your team! Pokemon Platinum is a great game to do something like that on. I hope the rest of your run goes well! :D

Yeah, for sure! Grass rarely gives you an unfair advantage though with all of its weaknesses. I've only been able to totally plow the Pastoria Gym because of the Water Pokemon. The rival battles are tough with Staraptor and Infernape. So yeah, it's a fun challenge! Since so many of my favorite Pokemon are Grass-Type, it's always worth the extra difficulty. And then I discover new Grass-Type Pokemon that I'm fond of, like Carnivine in this run.

I'm planning to do it in HeartGold (we're going through every game in order, so that's next). I'm excited to use Sunflora since I've never used it in a playthrough.

I realized when playing again that Alder's team is in the 70's the first time you face him in Black/White actually. For some reason I thought there were three Elite Four runs, but I guess not.

ANYWAY... with this information in mind, I decided to treat Ghetsis as the final hurdle for the challenge. If I defeat Ghetsis, I win the Nuzlocke.

And guess what??? I WON!!!! I beat Ghetsis to win my first generation five Pokemon Nuzlocke, thus making me a Pokemon Challenge Master, as I've won a Nuzlocke/Wonderlocke in EVERY generation now except for 9.

Here's a breakdown of what happened. First I went through route 10 and defeated everyone there, including Cheren. Then I went through Victory Road and defeated everyone, leaving only the Pokemon League left. I then Audino trained my team up to level 50 across the board, and took on the Elite Four.

I managed to make it past Grimsley, Shauntal, and Caitlin without losing anyone thanks to careful strategizing... but Marshal took out Marcus the Swanna and Thunder the Galvantula. I managed to win with the other four still alive, however.

I then went to face N and brought a sacrifice Pokemon, a level 6 Frillish with Cursed Body and a Rocky Helmet. My Zekrom I captured, which I nicknamed Death, tanked a critical hit Hyper Beam from N's Reshiram, and then finished it off. I defeated N while only losing the Frillish.

Here's where things get REAL interesting. I then took on Ghetsis.

At first I played a swap out game with Skar the Stoutland and Micheal the Krookodile against his Cofagrigus, but eventually took it out with Micheal. Then Ghetsis went straight to Hydreigon, so I switched to Death the Zekrom. And that's when Death lived up to his namesake by tanking a Dragon Pulse from Hydreigon and then CRITICAL HIT DRAGON BREATHING his Hydreigon, which OHKO'ed it. That was honestly the highlight of the entire challenge for me, as getting Hydreigon out of the way made things easier for my other fighters.

I then swapped to Midoriya the Emboar for his Bouffalant and used Focus Blast and Flamethrower to take it out. Then I switched to TOFWALVM the Musharna and used Yawn on his Seismitoad, and somehow managed to take it out with enough Psybeams.

Then I switched to Micheal the Krookodile and used Dig twice to take out his Bisharp. Moxie activated, which boosted Micheal's attack stat. I spammed Foul Play on his Eelektross and healed when necessary, and the last hit was a critical hit Foul Play thanks to Micheal's held item Scope Lens, which boosts the critical hit ratio of moves.

With Ghetsis totally and utterly defeated, and me still having 5 Pokemon alive, Team Plasma surrendered, Ghetsis fled thanks to the Shadow Triad, and I beat the Nuzlocke challenge.

I have to say that RNG was REALLY on my side for these last battles, but I couldn't have won without it. Here's my surviving team:

Midoriya the Emboar (M), Lv. 51
Skar the Stoutland (F), Lv. 51
TOFWALVM the Musharna (M), Lv. 52
Micheal the Krookodile (M), Lv. 52
Death the Zekrom (Genderless), Lv. 51

I may play this file again in the future and treat it like a Nuzlocke still, and get some new encounters in the new areas, but for now I am done with Pokemon and will go back to finishing Fire Emblem: Engage. Until next time. See ya!

Have you ever tried a hardcore nuzlocke?
