So this is a very minor thing, but I wonder if this might finally be the game where we say goodbye to the very restrictive 8-charater limits on town and player names? It's very overdue if you think about it, there's no real reason for it to be so sharply restricted anymore. It doesn't need to be anything crazy either, just 12 characters would make a massive difference in the possibilities.

So do you think this will happen? And what good town names would you like to use that you can't currently, if the limit was expanded?

I really hope this happens. As I have said before, I think the reason why it's so small is because Japanese text carries more information per letter than our Latin alphabet. I definitely wish they would change it because it's incredibly restrictive for speakers of languages such as English. I haven't thought of any good names if they changed it to something like 12 characters since I'm so used to it being 8, but I would look forward to seeing what people come up with.

You know, it's not something I've really thought about, but now that I have, I'd definitely like to see longer town and player names. Even if the Japanese vs Latin character thing were true, I don't see why it would matter. The Japanese players could just... not use that space if they don't need it? Plenty of Latin-alphabet players don't even use the full 8 now.

As far as if it happens, I don't have any ideas off the top of my head - and I don't really want to get any ideas because I'd rather not get my hopes up lol. Just chalking it up to 'little quality of life improvements' I hope come to AC Switch.

please. it's been one of the first things I've been asking for since even before the game's announcement

my #1 town name idea demands more than 8 characters

also, please, justin. I thought you had some potential leak rumors about this or something

I think it should allow for longer names!
I always choose the same small name, but it just seems as such a small cap.

That would be wonderful, I hate how so many games always have such tight restrictions that seem unnecessary. I don’t really get the need for such a strict limit in the first place so I guess we will see what happens. It would be a pleasant surprise though especially for people who want a town name with two words in it.

Unless the creators of AC make it so the limit is to about 12 characters, I don't see us moving past just yet... but I'm all for more room for a town name

I mean, I can work with the 8-character limit, since my town name is 8 characters long and
the mayor's name is just 5 characters long, but I would welcome it if they would allow more
characters for the town names and player/villager names, since it would give people more
freedom when it comes to searching for good names. Also people doesn't need to cut down
a name (like by removing a letter for example) anymore to use it when more characters are
allowed, which would be a good thing.

I've always wanted to name my town after some cartoon but the limit...I'd love for it to be expanded. There are names in real life that don't even fit the 8 character limit.

The name I have planned for my town (Taipei) would fit within the current limit, but I'd love it if this limit was finally moved up.

I really hope so... I've been dying to name a town Daguerreo since I first played Wild World way back when, and I'm officially done with Nintendo handcuffing those of us who want/need more than eight characters for naming our towns.

I think 12 would make just about everyone happy. Let's see if Nintendo will be generous to us on this upcoming gift that is AC Switch.

I could probably think of lots of town names if the character limit would increase, so I would definitely be in for this idea if they did it. My current name (and real name) is only six letters, so I'm OK with that. Town names though, I've always felt so limited.

Even if they increased the limit to 10-characters, it would help immensely with the choices for names. Especially for town names.

i would like that so i could name my new town wednesday because it's the sequel to tuesday

I hope so, maybe if they bump it up to 20 characters or something, I can finally come up with a good name. Also, how crazy is it that in Japan players could only use 6 characters???

Just another one of those things that I don't get, they could easily raise the cap tenfold but oh well

I would love this! Like you said, even a few extra characters would allow much more freedom with naming towns.
