Strangely, nothing at the moment. My library had been closed the past few days (but Idk about today), and the last two books I’ve read have been awful. Domestic violence was treated as some cutesy little relationship flaw. (Also, this was published in 2020, so no excuse for that.) Mind you, this was a cozy MYSTERY, but not much mystery was going on. The author also got distracted by a side plot about a kid with cancer, which could work, but didn’t add to the story.
The next book I read (a Debbie Macomber), was VERY hypocritical. It was all about people accepting each other’s difference, but then she described one fat woman (a roommate of a main character) as “grotesque” and constantly eating in front of the TV. Every time this character appeared, her weight was mentioned. It was like she didn’t have a personality.
This book was published in 2004, but hypocritical, given the overall message.
I’m reading Blessings by Chukwuebuka Ibeh. It’s my first time reading a book from a Gen Z writer and I’ve been really impressed so far. It’s set in Nigeria between the 2000s and 2010s and focuses on the coming of age story of a young gay man. The prose is excellent.
I just finished "Red Queen" by Christina Henry. It was the sequel to her book "Alice." I loved it! I was a little miffed by the lack of chapters, but it made everything flow better in the end.
Now I'm trying to finish "Wicked" again. It's a hard read in terms of overwhelming details so I keep putting it down for a break, haha. When my next Libby book comes in, "Sally's Lament", I'll be reading that.
On the final book (5) of The Shadow Campaigns series.
Very fun fantasy series about people with demon enhanced powers, but it's mostly well written battles in the time period of the early 1800's. Epic battles, with smaller fought battles with magical powers. Fun stuff!
Since my last update I've finished Six of Crows and read the first two books in the A Good Girl's Guide to Murder series! I'm now on the last book, As Good As Dead. Out of the trilogy, I think Good Girl, Bad Blood is my favourite.
I'm also reading The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline for school. It's a dystopian book about how Indigenous people are the only people left with the ability to dream, so these people called Recruiters are taking them to rebuilt residential schools and harvesting their bone marrow, because they think that's where the dreams are stored. For an assigned reading book, it's pretty good! It's not going into my 2025 Top Twelve or anything, but it's perfect for getting out of a reading slump or just back into reading.
I've also finally purchased the third Magnus Chase book, as well as the sequel to Six of Crows, Crooked Kingdom. I'll be reading those two before moving on to Fourth Wing (my friend has been pestering me for ages and I've owned the first two for a while so it's about time).
I don't think there's a thread for this and if there is I couldn't find it, nor did I want to necrobump an older thread. So here's mine!
What are you reading right now? A specific author, series or genre? Are you enjoying it or not, and what have you recently finished?
For me, I'm waiting on the next volume of Oshi no Ko, which is an AMAZING manga about the dark side of the entertainment industry. My library has volumes one through seven, and I've read the first four. Book 5 is taking ages to get turned in because WHOEVER checked it out doesn't want to return it on time...it was due back a week ago...
I also ordered the artbook and volume one for myself today.
In terms of what I'm reading, I just finished All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque (for a class) and Nightshade by Andrea Cremer. I liked AQOTWF but it was really sad. Nightshade was good and bad, so I don't know how to feel.
Right now I'm reading Say A Little Prayer by Jenna Voris and after that I'm going to read The Beasts We Bury by D. L. Taylor (both new releases).
Metropolis PT. 2: Scenes From A Memory by Peter Orullian
It seems kinda nerdy of me but... Dream Theater is one of my favorite bands and Scenes From a Memory is one of my favorite albums from them. It's not only magnificent from start to finish but also a concept album that tells a single story, each song being so meaningful to the main story in their own unique tone.
This book was made in honor of the album's 25th anniversary, completely expanding it's story. I bought it since I am a huge DT but I must say, the book itself has already made me very engaged in reading it. Each chapter tells two stories: One being Nicholas Santori's story that takes place in the late 90s and his "former life" Victoria Page's story which takes place in the late 20s. Each chapter from each character is very fascinating, it makes it hard to put down the book. The funny thing is I'm about 80 pages in and it's only been the build up, but a great build up thus far. I've yet to get to where Nicholas Santori goes to his past life regression through hypnotic therapy, which is actually where Dream Theater's album starts.
I am currently reading two really good mental-health books! One is called Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before by Dr. Julie Smith and the other is Your New Playlist by Jon, L.E, and McRae Acuff! They are both about mindset and therapeutic tools to help you live a happy life while balancing your emotions and feelings! They have some great advice and are really well written. I find them entertaining! Psychology books always fascinate me.
