I usually don’t say anything. Today I heard someone say “Bless you!” when someone hiccuped— but it was probably an accident lol. (Not as funny as overhearing “Bless you!” when someone farted, but you get the idea.)
That got me thinking…it is kinda weird how we don’t say something when someone hiccups. My family suggested “Sorry that happened.” or to offer water, but those sound awkward to me lol.
What do you think?

I don't usually say anything, but I just don't judge them for it and offer them some water. I know my family gets annoyed when I hiccup and tells me to stop, but it's literally uncontrollable, so it just annoys me when they're like that.

I usually just ignore it. It does get awkward when I or someone else gets hiccups. I always just try not to let it interrupt the conversation. I prefer to act as if nobody has hiccups, if that makes sense. It’s probably embarrassing for the person that has them, and I’d want to avoid making them uncomfortable if possible. I know it’d be awkward for me if I were in that position.

I've never said anything but it's rare that someone else gets hiccups around me. Unfortunately, I'm usually the one with hiccups and it is embarrassing. I prefer for others to ignore it. I try to quickly excuse myself and go somewhere private until I get them under control. I don't know why I get hiccups so often, but it's very annoying.

When I was younger I got hiccups for a long while in church (so it was really audible too lol), prompting the old woman in the row in front to turn around, advising us that "there are pills for that." Who knew? And how do you even respond to it? Anyway, that is still the go-to line whenever anyone in our family gets them.

I still get hiccups often after just the first or second sip of soda. Just instantly, and going on for several minutes until it hurts. Maybe I should have invested in those pills after all...

i dont say anything, i feel like it'd be weird to have someone tell me something for hiccups lol. i'm not a big fan of when someone says "bless you" when sneezing though, i just dont like it when someone.... acknowledges my bodily autonomy i guess??? LOL its a weird way to put it but thats the best way i can describe it

I don't say anything! I might sing some kind of song that's supposed to make it go away when I get it myself though.

I don’t know if this is true, but one of my teachers told me that “bless you” came from a Medieval superstition that if you sneezed, it meant you were possessed by a demon? Idk. I think a demon would have better things to do than make someone sneeze lol.

yeah I don’t usually say anything to acknowledge it, especially if it’s someone I don’t know. if it’s a friend I usually instinctively tell them to hold their breath or fake scare them, even though neither ever does anything lmao. if i hiccup though my friends usually complain (jokingly obv) because I seem to hiccup a weird amount recently lol

I don't think anyone says anything. Some might complain, but it's not something people can just switch off, so it's pointless and stupid on their part. I know some will scream 'to scare' the hiccups out of someone.

I usually tell them to take a deep breath and hold it for a couple of seconds and repeat a couple of times.
I tell that to those im comfortable around with and if i know the person, if not I just ignore it.

Its what helps me with hiccups, so I pass it along.

I don't usually say anything other than try holding your breath lol. Personally, I hate the hiccups!! Especially when I'm at work talking to people.

If it's someone I know I usually just say something to express sympathy, like an "oh no" or a "ugh, I'm so sorry", but I don't have a set expression like "gesundheit" when someone sneezes.

"Can you stop?" Nah, lmao. I'm just kidding, I'm definitely not that mean.

I tend to just not like it bug me and ignore it if I'm conversing with someone that has it. It will only make them more anxious and feel worse about it, so I think patience is key. Probably a good idea not to talk to them too long either if it's bugging them as well. Of course, if you have any actual remedies that aren't sarcastic or total nonsensical, then I guess you could tell them what they should try to do to relieve them of their hiccups.

If it's me, I giggle and apologize. If it is someone else, I smile at them or just ignore. If it is someone I know I giggle and they giggle too. It isn't a big deal where I lived.

I normally don't say anything because no one hiccups around me BUT SOMEHOW almost every other day in Social Study class I get uncontrollable hiccups and EVERYONE STARES AT ME but I think its fine and no one really cares. It just freaky when no one has any expression and just 👀👀👀

there isn't really anything i'd say in response to someone hiccupping like the way i would if someone sneezed (like 'oh bless you!') but i do usually tell the person to try holding their breath for a few seconds and to drink some water to help make the hiccups go away. it doesn't work all the time but that's usually what i try to do to make my own hiccups go away if i start hiccupping!

To strangers, I'll say absolutely nothing. I might joke about it if I hear a family member start hiccuping, but otherwise, nah, it's not really something where I feel obligated to say anything.
