I love cats and cat villagers. I try not to have too many at a time, but currently I have three. And I got rid of one specifically so a new one could move and I wouldn't have 4. Otherwise, the closest I've gotten to repeat species is having a cub and bear for a few weeks. And now I'm going to have a wolf and a dog.
it bugs me when there are too many of the same species on my own island. my island doesn't have a set theme (yet) but i like having a variety of personalities and species for visual effect.
I think if you are having two of the same species it helps if they are quite different personalities. I've definitely been to islands where they have lots of species duplicates without it feeling too repetitive.
For myself personally though.. I won't do duplicates if I can help it. If I found a villager I really wanted on a nook mile island that was a species I already have, I might invite them and then have my other villager of that species move out next. In that situation I think I could live with it but for the long term I prefer no duplicates.
I prefer not having any duplicate species on my island, since species diversity is a nice thing to have. At one point I did have 2 penguins (Boomer, Gwen) on my island due to needing a snooty, which wasn't too bad, though I jettisoned Gwen pretty soon (2-ish months) after getting her and haven't had any duplicate species since.

i'm not too picky about repeat species or personalities as long as my villagers are the cutest, which is easy since i find almost every villager adorable lol
I have four sheep, so having duplicate species doesn’t bother me at all! Having two villagers that are the same species and personality would probably be too much, though.
I'm okay with having a couple of the same species on my island. With Whitney, Audie and Wolfgang there's even a little pack of wolves living on there. It does not bother me since they have different personalities. :3
I'm not really bothered by species! I currently have two wolves, I've had two deer in the past and probably other dupes at other times... variety is nice of course but I prioritise balance between genders and personalities over species
And what if we have a full-dogs island? just joking.
I'm not a big fan of having two times the same specie. In my dreamlist, I don't have two times one and I think it's better. I love having different physical appereances even if I think two cubs could be very different, or squirrels, whatever but just... I'm not sure I like that.
My island is almost all cats because they're my favorite species. I have one cat of each personality (yes Raymond included) and it was hard to choose between some of them. I do have one horse and one wolf for variety but I could never part with my "cat pack."
can I just say that I laughed out loud when I read the option, "my island is made of only cats". I don't mind a couple of one species, I have 2-3 deer at a time, 2 cats at a time, 2 wolves... so yeah, not opposed.
It's not a big deal. I like to try to have a diverse bunch if possible but I have three bunnies. Bunnies are cute so I can't help it. I tend to look at all the villagers to see who can be potential permanent residents and I'm leaning hard on a lot of rabbits, lol.
I personally focus more on rotating my villagers based on personality so if a snooty leaves my town ill go mystery island on the next day on the hunt of a snooty and will take the first snooty i find, ensuring i have all personalities and i get to know everyone. I always have more than one repeated animal type in my town like 2 horses or two cats etc. i just got my first koala since i have the game so excited to see this new villager animal type
I don't pay that much attention to species. I care about personality types when I'm trying to get reactions but, since species doesn't impact reactions or DIYs, I don't care too much. I've had Genji and Ruby and Coco at the same time, multiple deer, and I currently have both Colton and Reneigh. They are great because they couldn't possibly be more different aside from being the same species.
I used to hate the idea of having more than one species on my island ever, until I reset my island...
And now 9/10 of my island is bears and cubs, because it wouldn’t be Bearadise if I didn’t have bears.
