There are many, many I could go for. I think it's really awesome that they made characters based on extinct species in the Dodo Airlines bros, so in that vein, I think thylacines would make awesome villagers!
Geckos, salamanders, newts, and other amphibians and reptiles would be neat!
Hyena and cheetah villagers would be a must for me, as well as honey badgers and wolverines! Bats and seals! Ferrets, polecats, and weasels! Mongooses, meerkats, warthogs, peccaries, fossa, fishers, shrews, capybaras, guinea pigs, voles, and hyraxes! Other bird types such as spoonbills, storks, cassowaries, rails, gannets, auks, parrots, and ravens would be cool!
Villagers of foxes, skunks, and raccoons (NOT Tom Nook and the Nooklings; those are TANUKI) could be cool! Maybe red pandas!
How about REALLY obscure? Like the Sable (a type of marten, not the shy brown hedgehog seamstress)! Or the coatis/coatimundis! Or the civets and genets!
Also, geese and swans. Not super keen on either bird IRL but it'd be cool to see them in Animal Crossing! They could have longer necks, narrower beaks, and smaller heads than the ducks.
We need more tigers, non-cranky kangaroos, and octopus villagers, as well as female lions (perhaps a lioness villager species)! Also, we need each species to have at least one animal of every personality, because currently there are fourteen species that don't have a Sisterly/Big Sister/Uchi villager at all (brought down from 15 with Reneigh, the horse)! I feel like with Cyd's design, we'd be getting another personality that's more punkish than simply a cranky villager, so that's a little odd that it didn't happen, but that's fine too.
Designs of pre-existing species could be nice if they included designs based on extinct species too, such as Tucker looking like a mammoth (and as a slight aside, I find it baffling they didn't put tusks on ANY elephants until they made one that looks like a mammoth, but I digress). Also, designs based on untouched or more obscure species, such as birds that are colored like budgerigars and kingfishers.
