What weird foods have you had?

I had squid not long ago for the first time and it was the last, squidgy textures just put me off and it didnt even look that appetising either.

Alligator if you count that. That's pretty much it though.

squid? some years ago but it was terribly dry and chewy so it wasn't that well made sadly. Might have liked it otherwise.

edit: im shocked that someone on this planet exists that finds lamb a weird food... this is like the main type of meat im used to eating and i eat it in many different dishes so frequently... like WAT ??? (with all due respect)

yhea before i went vegetarian/pescetarian(i still eat fish bc nutrition and i dont wanna take like 98 capsules everyday) i used to love lamb, my grandma do it very well and it was real good!

Goat cheese is out of the norm? :0

I'm not sure if this is weird, but about the oddest thing I've ever eaten was pig's feet. (It's really fatty but I did like all the cartilage).

I've been served fish eye, cow intestine and cow brain, but I refuse/d to try them. 😵

I'm part of a lunch crew at work and we all take turns bringing in weird foods for us all to try.

Today I had the honor of eating cow tongue. It was cut into cubes and we put it in place of ground beef in tacos. It was actually really good! It tasted like stewing beef when cooked in a slow cooker for hours. Very strong beef flavour and a nice tender texture. Nothing fatty or gooey. I never thought I'd ever try something like that. My coworker told us it was a weird meat so we all went in and tasted it to guess what it was. It tasted like beef but we all were guessing other animals like elk, bear, etc. I'm so glad he didn't tell me what it was ahead of time or I honestly might have not tried it lol. But it really didn't look like a tongue the way it was cut up and the colour it turned when cooked.

Before COVID, we also taste tested mealworm snacks! They tasted kinda nutty and basically turned to dust in your mouth. It took a good ten minutes to get your brain to shush and throw it in your mouth lol.

Not so much a weird food as a weird combo, but one of my college friends made me try chips dipped in yogurt.

I’ve had duck, goose, and grass. That’s about it, as I’m kind of a picky eater. My relatives ate alligator, snake, and spider (along other things I won’t list), so there‘s that.

Squid is very good, if it's cooked right. It's easy to overcook and turn it into rubberbands, which is probably why most people don't like it.

Growing up, one of my favorite dishes was squid stew. It's a tomato-based, slightly spicy stew that is very tender. Some crusty bread and a salad make a good meal.

As far as out of the ordinary food, at least in my area, I had a taste of buffalo. It was similar to beef, but richer. I'm not really a red meat fan, so that was enough. I've had escargot, which is really good. And since I'm in a big fishing area, I grew up on cherrystones, little necks, quahogs, oysters, mussels. I know they aren't unusual, but to see tourists' when you eat a little neck or cherrystone on the half shell is kind of funny. I've never been good at shucking, so I always had someone else open them for me, but I can eat them fast enough! :)

Frog legs.

Cricket (its all flavor powder with a crunch)

Cactus pear. Seeds are edible but there's a lot
cucamelon - watermelon the size of a grape and taste like a cucumber

Out of the ordinary fruit. It's not weird for me but most American grocery stores don't carry them or only have a few small boxes of it
kumquat, longan, dragon fruit, rambutan, durian,

I forget I made this thread. And how many people are all like 'oh you think that's weird' when I clearly said in post 2 yeah it's not the norm here.

I kinda wanted to try cricket before, just cause. Also cactus pear sounds and cucamelon sound so cool.

I live in a big city so half the stuff on your list is kinda the norm and pretty common in the grocery stores here. We alot have a lot more ethnic grocery stores so we get a lot of produce and products that mainstream stores don't carry. You just need to know where to look

True that, my main grocery store doesn"t have alot of unique ethnic food, and to my knowledge there aren't alot of reputable ethic focused food places around here that are also genuine. I don't mean like restaurant, more like Asian grocery stores or other true to culture and clean places to buy food/other culture items.

It does have a decent selection of fruits, I know I've seen durian and I think dragon or star fruit, but it's only like one variant, assuming there are different variants of those fruits (example apples).

I live in America so there's a lot of diabetic, heart attack food combinations out there xD
Whether it's based here or not, chicken and waffles is weird. I mean...I kind of like it? But it also depends how the restaurant or food creator makes and seasons the items. Some waffles are soggy or bland, others taste pretty good and the chicken is the weird factor.

Balut is another weird one, I had it a long time ago so I don't really remember the taste of it, but I don't entirely know if it is a dish I will be consuming ever again.

Spray cheese. I cannot express my distaste for this item. It's processed cheese in a can. Revolutionary yes, but gross. I get people like it, but it tastes so bad to me, it doesn't taste right, it hurts my heart to eat it (I haven't had it since I was like 8 and that is fine by me) and I'm relatively healthy. So the idea moreso confuses and disgusts me.

Twinkies. I love treats I won't lie, but something about a twinkie is "intriguing", but extremely weird too. It's that item that will last through a nuclear war and we'll all have to live off it like that Family guy episode, doomsday if you will. and no, I do not particularly like twinkies.

Pickled pig feet. Never again, it was something in science for some reason my teacher at the end of 7th grade had us do fun activities for the class, one of which involved eating strange foods. This was one of the items. 1/10 do not recommend.

Donuts. I for some odd reason cannot handle donuts, other than a homestyle donut or donut hole, yes the boring ones, but I can't eat one without feeling sick or bad about myself xD

These are ALL just me, I do not judge others but what they eat or like, by all means enjoy twinkies, donuts or your spray cheese, I will kindly sit over here and wave at you from a distance

I'm surprised that there are people who consider goat cheese "special"... 🤔 (Or lamb, duck and deer for that matter.)

The weirdest thing I've eaten must be monkey brain in a hotpot in China.

Also, Chinese pickled chicken feet. They were absolutely disgusting.

Edit: Also had squid, octopus, natto, all kinds of intestines, blood sausage and blood pancakes in case someone considers them weird I guess.

The Natto is kinda usually. I think it only seen it available at the Japanese grocery store that that store is nowhere near me. Techincially a lot of people have had intestine if they had a sausage with the casing on. Not sure if it's real intestine casing for the mass produced hot dogs and stuff but I'm guess it's not.

I wouldn't say I've eaten anything weird, but based on responses to this thread maybe I don't think they're weird because I'm used to eating them. Crocodile, duck, fish eggs, goat by-products, haggis, lamb, octopus, rabbit, squid, and venison are all perfectly normal in my books.
