if you know about 'pro/anti shipping', which side of it do you stand on? i'm personally very easygoing with ships and i ship quite a few things that people probably think is odd (for example, i used to be a BIG fan of thor/loki and i still casually enjoy it). it's kind of crazy to me to see newer anime fans get so aggressive about shipping, since when i was young people casually shipped things like hitachiincest (from ouran) or sebaciel (from black butler) and didn't really try to apply real-world morals to it. that being said, there are things i just don't vibe with (i don't like shipping adult characters with obvious children, but i also think that if someone does, it's not necessarily a reflection of what they think is ok irl, since i don't think incest is ok irl).

i ship characters sometimes. i cant help it. i dont think theres anything wrong with it, but i could see how it might upset the original creator if their characters sex/romantic identity is very important to them. it would be creepy for people to ship children with adults i think, but i dont think ive ever come across that.. hopefully it stays that way. i didnt realize there was a debate over this though so im curious to learn more perspectives

edit: oh i now see your example about sebastian/ciel. thats an odd ship to me bc hes a kid and sebastian seems more like a mentor. i think thats concerning people want them to be together in that way.. not my kind of ship tbh unless ciel is imagined as older then thats less weird to me. still odd though

I adore shipping characters. My main thing about shipping though, is if someone comes across a ship they don't like/agree with, they should just scroll past and move on. Fighting over fictional characters is silly and I think it's very rude for someone to come into someone else's space and just crap on something they like. Of course when there's a problematic ship, most people want to tell the shippers why it's problematic, however, it's highly unlikely the shippers are going to change their mind so what's the point.

For me also, ship dynamics are important. For example, I ship Kizaya (Masaomi and Izaya from Durarara!!) and without further explanation, it sounds terrible, doesn't it? However, the variant I ship is with an aged up Masaomi and where Izaya isn't abusive. In that instance, I think it's fine because it erases the adult x minor and abusive relationship thing. I don't think there's anything wrong with taking an otherwise unhealthy relationship and creating a story where it's healthy. After all, that's the whole point of fanon right? To be creative and just have fun with it.

incest ships and large age gap ships definitely weird me out, but i definitely am a little weird about shipping myself. i totally ship tons of characters from shows and fandoms, cant help it! personally i think everyone should be able to have their pwn opinions, ofc 💕

When it comes to my personal preferences, I prefer more positive/healthy shipping dynamics, but I'm not going to go after someone who likes otherwise. I've seen horrible cases of harassment directed towards people who like "bad" ships, and I can't understand trying to actually hurt someone over fictional characters. As it's been said, what people like in fiction isn't necessarily what they'd like or approve of in reality.
I'll say that I do think people should tag ships (in general, not necessarily just controversial ones) as well as potentially triggering subject matter where possible, so that people can more easily avoid it if they choose to, but that's about it. And when it comes to more mainstream fiction, as long as the work isn't trying to pass things off as "this is what a normal/healthy relationship looks like!!", then I'm not terribly bothered about it, I just won't engage with it myself. If something's not my cup of tea, I'll just go look at something else.

I ship characters sometimes but it's usually because I find their canon relationship dynamic to fit in that way. I'm personally not a fan of large age gaps or incest or bully and victim ships but it's mainly cause I just can't see them being in a relationship knowing those details. I have nothing against people that ship those kind of relationships, it's just not my thing.

I really don't understand the people who do care and feel the need to attack others for just liking what they like. Everyone has different preferences and just because it's not the same as your's doesn't give you the right to shame them for it. I follow artists on Instagram who are constantly attacked for posting ship art and I don't understand why people can't just scroll away if they don't like it.

I consider it all harmless fun.

I do tend to ship characters but I don't feel any need to discuss this with other people. Those thoughts are staying firmly anchored in my head.

Basically, this. I don't follow ships, but I'm not bothered when I run across it. I don't spend a lot of time personally thinking about ships, but sometimes as I'm reading/watching/playing something, certain ships may form naturally in my mind. I don't go out of my way to discuss the characters I ship, though.

I think its annoying but mostly harmless unless you're like, shipping incest, real people, abuse, or anything else problematic/gross.

I generally dislike people who are super obsessed with fictional characters though.

don't ship real people. that is all
I forgot that people do this. I've a friend in a successful punk rock band and there is so much fan fiction on the internet of him romantically / sexually involved with his bandmates. That really put things into perspective for me.

well, at any rate, congrats on your friend's success

I like shipping characters. Most of the time my ships are canon so I get to enjoy the romantic moments on the show. I don’t hate ships I personally do not agree with. I won’t go bashing someone if they ship said character with another person. I think there are better ways to handle someone having a different opinion than bashing them or hoping they’ll change their mind. Shipping characters is a completely innocent thing and doesn’t need any negativity surrounding it.

I am a HUGE romantic at heart, so I have a TON of ships, canon and fanon alike!! I even support self-shipping (as long as it is not pedophilia or shipping yourself with a real person without their consent, this includes celebrities), and me and my closest online friends actually partake in self-shipping. <333

The only things I don't like for people to ship is: Incest (OMG I have encountered a lot of toxic people who ship incest), pedophilia, and real people without their consent.

As for multi-shipping/poly-shipping, I am not a fan. I am one of those people who much prefers to ship one character with one character, but I am okay with people who do this, as long as they are respectful too.

I didn’t know there was a debate. I personally think there is nothing wrong with shipping characters and I find it fun as long as no one is insulting anyone for their ships. I don’t ship real people and don’t like incest or shipping children or anything else questionable.

Personally I've never really been a fan of the whole shipping thing. I can see how the idea of two characters being together could be cute, but I don't go and write 100k word fanfics about them or anything. I don't have anything against those who do that sort of thing though!

I sometimes do it for fun to myself or if I find someone who agrees on it, but I take distance from this serious shipping/hardcore fan fiction culture and stuff.

for the most part i don't really care until i have to look at it. trying to look for some nice fics only to keep running into awful horrendous stuff i'd rather not see and being unable to just block it outright is trash

I read this and thought it was going to be about shipping as in deliveries. Because I just got burned with a lost package lol.

I personally don't mind if someone does it, as it's ultimately up to the author/creator what is end game. Shippers become annoying when they become petty and violent to others when they ship something else that's not their preference, their ship isn't endgame, or it does happen and they treat others awful because of that.

I used to frequent a ATLA forum and the Zuko and Katara shippers were so annoying. It's one thing to like the ship, but most of them were the worst members there because of the reasons above.

That's not to say the creators endgame 'ships' are great. Because I hated how they handled Korra and Mako's relationship. They desperately wanted them to be endgame that they kept shoving it in our throat and detracted from the actual more promising storyline.

The nonbender revolution with their leader Amon was an amazing storyline that got squandered for teenage hormones. Would you rather watch nonbenders who are tired of being oppressed by benders and taking a stand or two teenagers being stupid?

It's even worst because Mako was in a relationship with another girl, Asami, and therefore cheating on her when this was all going on. And he never gets called out on it. He even gets caught because his brother accidentally mentions it to Asami and so Mako blames the entire situation on Bolin (his brother) and not on his teenage hormones. You know, cause he can't control those.
