Why are Kangaroo villagers disliked?

i love sylvia the kangaroo because she was my villager in new leaf, (my first ac game) and then she moved on the resident spot without me putting custom designs everywhere. i dont rlly like her design but i get so attached to her lol. also i love kit the kangaroo because i love her beautiful design.

Honestly, I think kangaroos got the short end of the stick in terms of designs. I don't think all the kangaroo's are awful by any means but I can't think of any of them that stand out in an, "oh I love them!!" way so they're kind of lacklustre to me. I feel a similar way about the lions - they could be really cute but none of them are really my favourites and I think that horses and chickens could go the same way if it wasn't for a few standouts (namely Julien for the horses and I just love Egbert for the chickens) which save them.

I find that to make matters worse the female kangaroos kind of creepy me out 😅 I had Marcie in New Leaf, I think? Somebody pointed out that the babies mimic the expressions of the mum but are otherwise completely ignored so it made them have an uncanny valley sort of feel to them, which put me off. The males don't have that issue but when it comes down to it I find that there are cuter cranky villagers (I think there are only cranky kangaroos for the boys? Maybe I'm reading the wiki page wrong though lol). I wouldn't mind Walt but he wouldn't be my first choice or even in my top 5 choices for cranky villagers.

I don’t think the kangaroos are awful overall but I’m not a fan of the joeys and how they don’t really seem to have a life of their own, they just copy the female kangaroos and come across as a little creepy to me. I have had Kitt on my island though and thought she was alright and I like Mathilda‘s colour scheme but the other female kangaroos don’t really have designs that I find interesting enough to see past the joeys so I generally just avoid them.

I like both the male kangaroos though and have previously had Rooney on my island, it helps that they don’t have joeys but I also find their designs overall more interesting then the female kangaroos.

Somewhat creepy appearance, probably due to the fact that babies share their appearance with mother. No differences at all.

i don't hate them, but like everyone else has said, the weird joeys put me off of the species. i don't like that they never mention the joeys and the joeys don't even seem to have names. i get that they can't have entirely new personalities but just mimicking the movements and expressions of their mother kangaroo who doesn't even seem totally aware that they exist?? it's weird.

I like that their models are different and have a bit more thought to them. The Cats and Bunnies are basically chibi humans with ears attached. So it's cool to see the amount of attention that went into making the Kangaroos more like their actual species. But it did come at some costs. They are one of the few species with more realistically sized feet for their model, but this also means that they clip with the books they read when they sit down. Also, the pouches make it a little harder to find good looking outfits for the females.

The biggest issue however is the Joeys. They could really be the shining aspect of the species, but instead they hurt the species instead. They have 0 dialogue and 0 dialogue about them. They look identical to the mother, instead of looking like actual children. And of course they share ever single blink and emote with the mother which makes them feel very artificial. Most of the species is female to, so most of the species has the Joey issue going on.

Lastly two of my bottom of the barrel villagers are Kangaroos simple cause they got some really ugly designs. You have the ugly, dolled up pink one lacking a nose and the angry looking purple one with conflicting, awful orange hair. They'd be ugly without the Joeys, but now it's worse cause their babies are also them. Disgusting!

Rooney not being a Jock is also highly questionable.

I don't have any kangaroos on my island, but I did have Kitt and Mathilda in my NL town. I loved both of them.

It would be nice if the joeys were a bit more autonomous, but I'd take any of them over a gorilla, any day. :D

Kangaroos could have been so much better. Why do the females have to have a joey? Why not do a bear cub/bear thing instead, with a big kangaroo species and a small joey species? That would have been so much cuter!!
Or a cat with a kitten like Katie. Kangaroos are disliked because they’re not cats.

I like the Kangaroos. While most people apparently seem to find the joeys mimicking their mothers to be creepy, I just find it to be kind of cute. That said, there are only a few Kangaroos whose designs I actually like: Astrid, Mathilda, Rooney, and Walt.

Astrid is probably my favorite of the Kangaroos and she's one of the villagers in my circus/magic show town in New Leaf as a clown representative (since Pietro is in a different town) alongside Marcel (who, admittedly, is more of a mime). I like clowns and would like to see more of them in the series and would like the return of Pierre.

Walt has been a villager in a different New Leaf town for years, though I've been considering replacing him after all this time just for a change of pace. I like the stubble, the scar, and the handwraps. He just seems neat.

I had Rooney for a short time as one of the early-game villagers in one of my New Leaf towns. I replaced him for someone who fit the theme more, but I liked his boxer design. Solid villager, in my opinion. Only complaint would be the same complaint I have for other villagers like Lucha, where they only have a section of a full boxing/wrestling ring in their house rather than the whole thing. It takes up less space but it doesn't look good. But I digress, Rooney is good by me.

Finally, I've never had Mathilda in any of my games yet, but I wouldn't be opposed to it if I could find a way to fit her into the plans. She's fairly basic compared to the rest, but I don't know, I just like her.

To wrap this post up, though I personally like the joeys, I can agree with the other comments people have made about it being kind of weird that all of the female Kangaroos have them. It would be sort of refreshing to see some more ladies without them just to make things more interesting. They probably won't, just so they can keep things visually distinct, but it would be nice.

i kind of like astrid but i would never have them on my island. i have nothing against kangaroos but they’re not my favorite species, imo they removed all the good kangaroos like valise. i actually like the babies because they’re unique to the kangaroo species. Some of the kangaroo villagers are unappealing but most of them are just flat out ugly.

I agree with everyone who said something about the joeys. It's uncanny when the joey is basically head 2 for the kangaroos and both heads react. And the Kangaroos don't interact with the joeys at all, which is why it just seems like the kangaroos have two heads instead of a separate entity in their pouches.

I agree with the above posters that their design just wasn’t implemented well (or at least, to my personal aesthetic). I suppose if I had much more than 10 villager slots, I would give kangas and some other species a shot (i.e. anteaters, mice, hamsters, koalas, and chickens for me), but I don’t play a revolving door game with my villagers, so my ten slots are solely reserved for those species that I really like and enjoy.
