Wildlife Spotting (The Poliwags Cabin)

Does anyone remember, back when we had mailboxes that could get full, what kind of notification we got when we tried to send a message to someone whose mailbox was full? Did an NPC appear?
Phil would come up and tell you to empty it

Oops I mean Pete

I think we need to believe more in the staff. They wouldn't give us an impossible riddle. We shouldn't have to brute force it. We should be able to solve it. There has to be a solution.

...Although they did leave the "spot" typo in the third riddle, since it turned out to not have any meaning. It was just a mistake. Maybe there's a mistake in this whole "bearer" one, and that's why we haven't solved it yet.

I do think it's probably best if we don't dedicate ourselves entirely to brute-forcing—as you said, there's a solution, and if we can figure it out, that will be the fastest way to solve it. But I think trying to brute-force it might be a good alternative for when we're feeling stumped for ideas, or for members who aren't confident in their puzzle-solving ability, but still want to help; it's probably better than nothing, at least. And of course, the more organized/strategically we go about it, the better.

Is this referring to on the forum or in-game?
I know in ACNL pete would show up and ask you to empty the mailbox.

idk about on TBT though, I think it happened to me once but i don't remember any special NPC message about it...

So are we sure #2 is a code or on the forum or are we just covering both options?

I don't think we're absolutely sure one way or the other, but given that the first post mentions that we might be looking for "a fox or a bear," and there's an opportunity for a bear pun in the word "bearer," and we've already solved one image-finding clue and one code-solving puzzle, I think that, probably, we're looking for an image of a bear.

Okay, so... Something that appears on a regular basis... how would one see such a thing between the regular times that it's supposed to appear? In Animal Crossing, the answer is time travel. Maybe a thread about time traveling has something appearing irregularly?

I agree with this. How should we break up the search into manageable chunks that people can do between spurts of inspiration? Maybe something like 'every thread per page in a section, unless it has an absurd number of pages (like the ACNH FAQ) in which case one person can commit to doing just that thread or it can be broken into segments'. idk. But I just got back into this clue after the last one and I'm already burnt out and wanting to just mindlessly scroll for a bear or fox.

I've combed through most of the posts for the first and second easter egg hunts (following the zipper=bearer thread). I can continue to check easter threads!

You say that, yet here we are, 51 hours later and we don't really have much to show for it. While the staff probably think it's easy, it's important to remember that they know what the answer is and thus are able to see how the clue makes sense. We don't have the answer, we don't get how it makes any sense. I think what we've really proven is that the clue is just too vague for us to really know what it's referencing, because we've come up with dozens of possibilities at this point and it hasn't amounted to anything. We have no idea if anything we've said is on the right track or not. Trying to brute-force now with just under 69 (nice) hours left gives us enough time to do it and not have to worry as much about not figuring it out before Sunday.

Ultimately, brute-forcing isn't just about trying to solve it, but also about trying to figure out where it isn't. So, for example, I've already said I've checked every thread in the Camp Bell Tree 2021 section and did not find it. So that means we know the clue can't be related to anything with the camp itself. If we're able to reduce it down enough, that means we should potentially be able to figure it out on our own without fully completing the brute-force search. As well, while brute-forcing isn't really viable during a normal egg hunt because we're doing it individually, here we are able to divide and conquer and each take a part and go through everything to see if something exists, which speeds up the process. As long as we do it in a strategic manner as Merielle said (i.e. we aren't just trying to search forums like The Cellar where it's highly unlikely to exist), this will work.

Anyways, it'll be awhile before I get the post I want up, but I do think maybe the New Horizons section would probably be the best place to start, since it seems like a lot of our posts have centered around AC characters. Checking The Bulletin Board again isn't a bad idea, since while there's a lot of pages, there's also not that many threads that have to be searched, and we have already checked some to completion (i.e. Halloweaster, recent Friday the 13th thread).

so how many of you have just gone all spreadshot looking into every possible place with no regards to the clue itself, now that we know for sure it shouldn't be a coded answer?

Like I said, I still think the possibility that the staff made a mistake is viable. And if that's the case, brute force might be the only way we'll locate it. I'm not saying we shouldn't use brute force. I'm just saying that it feels like we shouldn't have to.

I agree. Generally speaking I prefer to work smart as opposed to hard, but we’ve tried that! At this point the prompt it too vague with way too many solutions and places to look, unless we’re able to narrow our field of view we will never get there excluding by blind luck. Speaking purely personally: this has surpassed challenging and become infuriating, which quite frankly isn’t the point.

hey, I've brute forced a bunch of my egg clue answers throughout all the hunts

there's nothing against doing such

I’ve been searching a lot of staff posts and sadly no luck yet 👎 if we all work together I know someone is bound to find it

I feel like it has to be something that is animated, since it appears irregularly. Maybe it's an avatar that appears to be static but is animated or something
